Somewhat atypical for our ARBOURs, Ours appears to have remained in one place his entire life, as he has been located in Joliette City from beginning to end. As a young man, Ours worked as a baker (1881) but later returned to his farming roots and became a farmer (1901). In St-Liguori, QC, on 15 May 1883, our 31-year old Ours married 17-year old Marie-Zephirina GRENIER. Together Ours and Zephirina had 9 children, 3 of whom died in childhood. During the 1901 Census, Ours and family lived in Breau Moulin - possibly the name of their farm - which was in St-Charles-de-Borromèe parish in Joliette City. They owned a 3-room house plus 5 outbuildings on 162 acres. How they ever fit 9 people in a 3-room house is probably beyond the comprehension of most of us today. Ours died shortly after this on 21 February 1902, just shy of his 50th! birthday. Widowed Zephirina married Narcisse DUVAL on 12 April 1909. These 12 children are the reason Michel and Josephine were able to apply for a special land grant from the Government of Quebec, which extended such a privilege to families simply because they had 12 children. However, it is not clear that Michel and Josephine ever received their land, as they decided to emigrate to the US in about 1898, initially settling in the Willimantic, Connecticut, area. Just a few years after their arrival, Leon married 18-year old Sophronie BERTRAND in Willimantic on 21 June 1901. Between 1902 and 1916, Leon and Sophronie had 10 children born in Connecticut, Quebec, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, indicating how much they moved around. Throughout his life, Leon supported his family in various ways: Cotton Weaver (1900), Carpenter at a Mill (1910), Machinist with an Auto Repair Company (1! 918), Repairman with an Auto Shop (1920). According to his WWI Draft Registration, Leon was of medium height and medium build, with brown eyes and grey hair. Leon was just 49 when he died in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on 09 July 1925. Sophronie then enlisted a partner to assist her in raising her children. On 15 October 1927 in Holyoke, Sophronie married 47-year old Jeremie GIROUX. Born in Joliette City, QC, Louis was the 4th child and 2nd son of Jean-Baptiste and Emelie's brood. Like many generations of ARBOURs before him, Louis became a farmer. The 26-year old farmer married 17-year old Sidonie ETHIER on 07 March 1859, in Joliette City. Louis and Sidonie added 13 children to their family, 4 daughters and 9 sons, all of whom were born in Joliette County. While their first child was born in Joliette City in 1859, by the year 1870, the family was part of the brand new Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie Parish located further north in Joliette County. In 1871, Louis was a farmer in Ste-Emelie, along with many of his brothers. The family was still living there in 1881. From the 1860s through the 1880s, Louis saw his siblings slowly left Joliette County in search of better opportunities elsewhere. Younge! r sister Zoe and her family migrated to Ontario in about 1867. Younger brother Xavier and his family, along with younger brother Basile, migrated to Ontario in about 1868. Lastly, younger brother Magloire followed them in about 1883. Sometime thereafter, the Louis-Sidonie branch of the ARBOUR family made the big move to the Province of Ontario and settled in Simcoe County. The exact date of their move has yet to be determined, although it was most likely around spring 1886. In January 1886, Louis and Sidonie served as godparents to their grandson in Ste-Emelie. Their next appearance was in Midland, Ontario, as godparents for their niece Mary Louise ARBOUR in July 1886. Once in Ontario, Louis and Sidonie settled in Waubaushene to begin employment with the Georgian Bay Lumber Company. In 1890, Louis was a tenant farmer on Concession 10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. The 1891 Census also shows them living in Waubaushene. Sidonie then died in Waubaushene on 28 January 1899. Soon afte! r Sidonie's death, Louis appears to have abandoned his farming efforts and moved into town. By April 1901, widowed and living with his 3 youngest sons, Louis owned a 4-room house with an outbuilding on ¼ acre of Concession 10, Lot 10, in the town of Waubaushene. He earned $275 that year at the mill. By May 1911, Louis and son Alexander lived with daughter Elide and family. Louis ultimately died from dropsy on 03 April 1916. However, he had suffered from heart problems for about 3 months before his death and his dropsy was brought about by heart failure. Louis and Sidonie can claim 61 grandchildren and a staggering 141 great-grandchildren! Who volunteers to count the next generation? The young couple then made a southerly trek which brought them to Connecticut, where they settled into the community of Winsted. During the year after their wedding, Louis and Louise welcomed their only child, a daughter named Bertha Alma ARBOUR, into their home. According to his WWI Draft Registration, Louis was noted to be tall with a medium build, brown eyes, and black hair. During the Spanish Influenza Epidemic of 1918, poor Virginie succumbed to the illness. After her death, her body was transported b! ack to Quebec for burial in St-Raphael.
