William's story is tragedy personified. He emigrated to the US with his family somewhere between 1881 and 1893, and settled initially in Wisconsin and then in Duluth, Minnesota, by 1900, possibly as early as 1895. On 29 November 1895, he married 19-year old Julia M. LUCE. Over the next 15 years, the young couple had 11 children, only 7 of whom seem to have made it out of childhood: Ethel, Beatrice, Violet, Wilfred, Bernard, Edward, and Jean. Like his father before him, William also worked as a fisher and then a longshoreman. It was not until shortly after his 53rd birthday (not his 48th) that tragedy struck on 52nd Avenue in Duluth during the evening of 26 May 1916. The newspaper account of the time tells quite a tale and leads one to believe that there were some serious issues at play within the dynamic of this family. Duluth Herald (MN) -- 27 May 1916 KILLS SELF WITH RAZOR -- William Arbour Thwarted in Attempt to Kill Wife, Commits Suicide -- Daughter's Screams Save Mother -- Divorce Action Had Been Begun After failing in an attempt late last night to murder his wife, William Arbour, aged 48, went out to a woodshed in the rear of the house, 214 North Fifty-Second Avenue West, and slashed his throat with a razor. His body was found shortly afterward by Sergeant Andree and Patrolman Root, who had been sent for by the daughter, whose screams saved her mother's life. Arbour came home about 9 o'clock in the evening and told his daughter Beatrice, aged 16, that "somebody was going to be killed about the house," and if he could find her mother he would kill her. The girl was frightened and ran to a neighbor's residence. It was about an hour later that the daughter came back to the house and was attracted by screams of her mother from the kitchen. Rushing to the back to the house, the daughter found her father clutching her mother's throat and waving a razor over her head. The daughter's screams seemed to frighten her father, or at least divert his attention, and he ran out of the ho! use. The police were then called and they began searching the neighborhood for Mr. Arbour. They found him about a half hour later, dead, on the floor of the woodshed. The body was ordered removed to Filliatraut's undertaking rooms. Divorce proceedings were begun some time ago by Mrs. Julia Arbour against her husband. The court had issued a restraining order against the husband, forbidding him to visit the home of his wife or the children. He is said to have been angered by the court's orders and to have made several threats against his wife. There are six children in the family: Mrs. Ethel Lippman, Beatrice, Violet, aged 13, Wilfred, aged 9, Bernie, aged 7, and Gorman, aged 4. He also leaves two brothers, Dan and John, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Brown, all living in west Duluth. The funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock from the St James Catholic Church, with interment in Calvary Cemetery. The longshoreman's union, of which he was a member, will have charge! of the funeral. Quite a disturbing story, by any means. Julia was not yet 40, but she attempted to keep her family together and to provide for them. Within a few years of William's death, Julia had married Moses Baker BAILES. While they had no children together, Julia did live a long time and saw the births of 9 grandchildren. Moses died in Duluth on 25 August 1948, at about age 81. Julia died in Duluth on 19 June 1961, just shy of her 85th birthday. William and Julia's grandchildren have been responsible for bringing 12 more ARBOURs into this world. William married 20-year old Demerise RABY in St-Raphael on 16 June 1908. Immediately after this, the young couple moved to the United States and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts, where William worked as a fixer at a hosiery mill and Demerise worked as a stitcher at a hosiery mill. They only resided in the US for a few years, however, before packing up for the long trek to Saskatchewan. William must have moved his family to Zenon Park, SK, to take advantage of the Homesteading Act. This provision sold folks 160 acres for $10 -- a deal they could not get back in Quebec or Ontario, or even in the US. In 1911, their first of 3 children was born in Zenon Park, although one died while young. William worked as a tanner that year. In 1916 and in 1922, his occupation was reported as farmer, but the family knew! him to be a carpenter, making cupboards, doors, butter churns, etc. In May 1922, William and family travelled to the US via the port of Montreal, QC. They left St-Raphael, QC, were headed for his brother Joseph's place at 208 French St in Lowell, MA, and planned to once again remain in the US permanently. William was noted to be 5'8" tall with a medium complexion, brown hair, and green eyes. Demerise was noted to be 5'3" tall with a medium complexion, brown hair, and green eyes; she also had goiter problems. Seven-year old daughter Juliette had a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. Eleven-year old son Albert had a medium complexion, light brown hair, and brown eyes. The family carried $530 with them. Despite their good intentions, the family did not stay in the US. By November 1925, they were back in Saskatchewan, where they seem to have lived continuously through 1949 and even into 1952. William died in Zenon Park on 09 January 1952. He was buried there in Zenon! Park Cemetery. Shortly after this, Demerise moved to Kelowna, British Columbia, to live with Juliette. She apparently died there but we have no details of her demise. William and Demerise are responsible for 11 grandchildren and an unknown number of great-grandchildren. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Harold grew up in Pownal and appears to have applied himself in school, where he made the honor roll. On 24 June 1926, he graduated from Williamstown High School and shortly thereafter became employed by the Irving Bank Trust Company in New York City. The following year in August 1927, Harold entered Allen's School of Commerce in Troy, NY, where he took a 2-year commercial teachers course. After graduation he found employment as a Business College Teacher, where he worked during the taking of the 1930 Census. In September 1935, Harold seems to have returned to Schenectady, NY, where he was engaged by the Spencer Business School as head of the secretarial department for the ensuing year. He held this position at least through the 1939-1940 school year. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor! , Harold felt his call to duty. In February 1942, he enlisted in the US Coast Guard, then under US Navy supervision, at the Albany, NY, recruiting station. Throughout his stint in the Coast Guard, Harold served in Curtis Bay, MD; New London, CT; Groton, CT; Palm Beach, FL; West Palm Beach, FL; and Manhattan Beach, NY. At the time of his departure from the Coast Guard in October 1945, Harold received an honorable discharge. Newspapers further noted that prior to the war, he served as Assistant Principal of Spencer Business School in Schenectady. Utilizing these skills, he taught shorthand and typing while in the service. He trained about 250 men and 2,000 women - the men for immediate sea duty and the women each replacing a man on shore duty. At the time of his separation, Harold had no plans for his immediate future. By April 1947, though, Harold seems to have found work - this time in Roanoke, VA, as teacher and principal of the School of Secretarial Science of the Nationa! l Business College. The following June he enlisted in the Navy Reserve at Norfolk, VA, for a term of 4 years. By April 1956, Harold was an instructor at Hollins College in Roanoke - a position he held for 15 years. Harold finally retired in 1970 and returned home to Pownal. In May 1984, he was elected historian at the local American Legion Post. Shortly after this, Harold seems to have fallen ill. He died in Bennington, VT, of congestive heart failure on 21 December 1985. He was buried in the North Pownal Cemetery in Pownal. However, Hortense was baptized in the community in which her mother was born and raised and in which her parents were married. Although typical of the time, Hortense had no occupation outside the home but she no doubt was a tremendous help to her mother in caring for her younger siblings. In fact, she was one of 3 sisters in her family who never married and who died as spinsters in middle age. When she was 27-years old, though, Hortense seems to have had an illicit affair. On 06 April 1869, she gave birth to her daughter, Helene ARBOUR. Their situation is a bit unusual in that Hortense actually claimed Helene (aka Ellen) at her ba! ptism, but no mention was made of a father. Although Helene's marriage record shows that Hortense was married to a man named Joseph ARBOUR, we believe that there is no such person. Most assuredly, Helene was an illegitimate child and a fictitious father was created to give her some legitimacy.
