There are several different family lines of BATES' in the Missouri/Arkansas area. Most of the one I know about are either through William BATES who led the wagon train from Cherokee Co, Ga about 1853 or one of my family lines out of York County, SC. The line that was in Sebastian County is John BATES Sr' second son, Zachariah BATES who went to Madison County, Tennessee before moving to Arkansas about 1850. The William J. BATES who settled in Boone Co (it was part of Carroll Co at the time-1876) was Zach's youngest son and, as I iterated previously, we have no idea why he left Sebastian Co which makes it part of our research efforts. Most of our problems is not able to do onsite research which, as most researchers know, is essential to finding the most relevant information and, many times, wall-busting information. Also, in a lot of places like Boone Co, much of the records are actually in the county of origin, in this case Carroll, from before this count was formed. I have an old file I created some years ago when tracing the seven different BATES family lines I fount to be out of South Carolina between 1805 to 1850 mostly into Georgia and Alabama. This file did not have my particular family line because we could not locate the South Carolina connection until about a year ago although I had many conversations with one of the researchers without establishing the link for quite some time. I just checked that file and do not find the names you mentioned however, I do not have a lot of later (after 1860) information as that was the primary era I was looking in (1830-60) for my connection and did not keep them up after deciding I was not going to connect to any of them. I also try my best when contacting other BATES researchers to see if I can link them with one of the lines I have done a little research on and to date, only have one who I have not been able to positively identify a connection. However, all of the ones I have helped were ! connected to John Isaac BATES "The Immigrant" which allowed me to point them to Witt BATES, researcher of BFOOV (Bates Family of old Virginia) who I have had many dealings with over my years of research. I sometimes wish I had the resources to pursue a "One Name Study" on all the BATES lines in North America but that is well beyond my scope, both financially (both travel and computer capabilities) and timewise. I would probably take an organization like the LDS to be able to implement to be able to produce searches of every county/province archives and even for them my four primary families (BATES, REYNOLDS, ALLEN, PRICE) would still be a HUGH undertaking, even for them. Oh well. Life goes on whether or not we want it to.
