Hi Mysty - J S Tye is John Samuel Tye, son of Job Tye & Nancy McCarty, husband to Emaline Mitchell ~ daughter of Joel D. Mitchell & Elvira Dibrell. T J Tye is Thomas Jefferson Tye - son of Job & Nancy, husband to Missouri Looper. I'm not sure who the John Tye was & I'm not familiar with Ed Gerdes' website ~ at least not by that name. Do you have a url for that site? Job Tye is buried in the Denning Cemetery, as well as son John Samuel Tye & wife Emaline Mitchell Tye. No reference to wife Nancy McCarty Tye at all ~ in an early history book for Carroll Co. Arkansas (can't recall the title but have copies of it here somewhere) mention is made that only about 4 houses were left standing in the Crooked Creek Twp area after the Civil War, so it is a safe bet the Tye family went somewhere else to escape the destruction. Their youngest son Henry Miller Tye ended up in Texas, their oldest daughter Nancy Ann Tye married William C. Mitchell, brother to Emaline Mitchell Tye & ended up in Indian Territory around 1890, and their middle daughter, my gg-grandmother, Georgia Ann Tye married George Washington Stiffler & moved to Forsyth, Missouri. To date, I have found daughters Nancy & Georgia, and sons John & Thomas - haven't seen Henry's census stuff for 1880 ~ but out of the 4 kids I have found records on, mother Nancy McCarty Tye is not with them. Job's gravestone has the symbol of man & woman's clasping hands ~ have been trying to determine if that is symbolic enough to mean that he preceeded wife Nancy in death, but have also been told that is sybollic of the Oddfellows, so that may mean he was a member of the Oddfellows. So far, just absolutely no luck in finding the elder Tye's - Nancy & Job on the 1870 census, and nothing on Nancy beyond the 1860 census. The last land record was in Carroll Co. where they sold some property in 1857 that they bought in 1854. Nancy was alive & well then as she had to swear she was signing the deed of sale by her own violition and not being made to by husband Job. ~gina~ In a message dated 12/12/2001 1:15:35 PM Pacific Standard Time, shakerag@mtnhome.com writes: > Have you check Ed Gerdes' Original Civil War Page? Don't forget, Gina, that Boone Co was created from Carroll Co in 1869. It's my guess the Tyes never moved - but the county boundaries changed. Have you check Ed Gerdes' Original Civil War Page? It's searchable. Found John, J S, and T J Tye - only ones I checked. Once you know the unit in which they served, you can order their records from NARA. My ggg-grandmother was Nancy McCarty b. ca 1809 in Georgia, most likely Oglethorpe Co., but not positive. She married Job Tye there 26 January 1826, and they remained there until around 1838 when they moved to Murray Co. GA to live on the land Job won in the Cherokee Land Lottery. By 1854, they & their 5 children (Nancy Ann, John Samuel, Thomas Jefferson, Georgia Ann & Henry Miller) had moved to Carroll Co., Arkansas. The last known record I have for Nancy McCarty Tye is the 1860 US Census for Carroll Co. ARK, though her husband Job Tye & son, John Samuel Tye are buried in the Denning Cemetery in Harrison, Boone Co., Arkansas. At the time of the 1820 US Census for Oglethorpe Co. GA, the household of Sally McCarty contained a young girl of the proper age to be my Nancy McCarty, and this family was near to the family of Samuel Tye which had a young man of age to be my Job Tye (Samuel & Job are believed to have been brothers). Sally McCarty is the widow of Sherrod McCarty, having been married in Oglethorpe Co. GA in 10 Jan 1801 ~ I believe that Sally Finn & Sherrod McCarty are probably the parents to my Nancy. I believe Sally "Sarry" & Sherrod McCarty also had children Lucretia "Creasy" who married Seaborn Waggoner, Daniel McCarty who married Sarah Latimer, Sherrod McCarty Jr. and possibly a son named Thomas. So far, my research (which has been limited to date on the McCarty's) indicates the other children of Sherrod & Sally (Finn) McCarty remained in Georgia. ANY help on this family would be gratefully appreciated. This family has been like trying to find a matchbox boat in the middle of the Atlantic. ~gina thomas patterson~ Long Beach CA LET THE PEACE OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON VISIT YOU & YOURS THIS MONTH AND ALWAYS please visit my website at www.burningskyenterprises.com family album - http://www.geocities.com/ginaburningsky4/burningskyent_genealogy.html

The discussion on the condition & content of early census records brought to mind my own experience in being "chosen" to participate in the 1990 census. I received in the mail the census form ~ seems to me it was at least 10 pages long (maybe less but not by much). I looked at that form (wasn't into genealogy yet) and said to heck with this, I'm not telling them all this stuff!! I promptly "round-filed" the envelope ~ only to have some woman pester me on the phone & finally showed up here in person on a SUNDAY in her jeans (we were building a full/bunk bed set for the girls) & promptly sat down on a pile of wood, dragged out her form & pencil & let me know she didn't care if we were working, she'd just ask me questions & she would write the info down for me ~ this was supposed to be "painless". WHAT A PAIN!! She wanted to know stats on all the folks who lived in the house, (we had our kids from two different marriages ~ therefore 2 different sets of bloodlines, and 2 nieces & a nephew which called for another completely different set of lines) where my parents were born, their parents & much, MUCH more. I had only met my dad 10 years before that when I was 25 ~ so I guessed on his family's info because I hadn't yet developed a close relationship with my pop & had never asked him questions about his family or even about where he was born. And some of the questions they asked I had never even dreamed of asking my Mom, who I grew up around. So, when you look at the census info that we can access & the frustration grows, let me tell you, we probably have no idea what was going on in our family's households when the census taker showed up ~ and a good chance was that he could very well have arrived at an inopportune time!! ~gina~ LET THE PEACE OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON VISIT YOU & YOURS THIS MONTH AND ALWAYS please visit my website at www.burningskyenterprises.com family album - http://www.geocities.com/ginaburningsky4/burningskyent_genealogy.html

For probably some of the best census information on the web, go to http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas. Scroll down to Learning Center. Click on this. Scroll down to Census. Look thru both options. They're both very instructive. Be aware that ideally all the information for any given family for any census was supposed to have been given by the *Head of Household* which was usually the husband. Also ideally this person knew the correct answers to all the questions the enumerator asked. Sometimes this Idealism didn't happen. A neighbor maybe gave the information 'cuz the family wasn't home - doing the best he could. Or a relative that was home at the time, but really didn't know all the details. Or the Head of Household was a newly married stepfather, knowing little about his new wife and less about her kids by her first husband. In the case you site, you must realize that every roll of microfilm for any given census is exactly like every other roll of microfilm for that census. They're all copies of the original copy. It's like ordering 10 copies of a family photo - they all come out exactly the same. The info on the 1900 was apparently given by the Head of Household, but the filmed copy isn't very good and some words aren't legible. The same problem will apply to every other copy of this film. The info on the 1910 would have been given by the son - the Head of Household. Apparently he didn't know some of the facts about his parents - just told the enumerator what he thought was correct. Or else his information was far more accurate than what his father stated in 1900. Haven't actually researched the Wills family, but to the best of my knowledge, they didn't arrive in AR until 1868-70. The known progenitor was born in VA and died in AR. They probably came via TN, settling for a time around Greene Co. MO where some, if not all, of the children were born. I'd suggest you review the Boone Co 1880 census and the Boone Co 1870 census to see what dates/places they provide for your ancestors. Sometimes the younger the folks are who give the information, the more accurate it's apt to be; we forget lots of details as we grow older <sigh> Hope some of this is helpful to you now and in the future. Have already gotten many responses to the virus problem. Thanks for the education and update on the situation. I have a very old MAC and i just can't open any of the attachments, fortunately. But unfortunately if I naively forward them to friends to check them out then I have a problem. Live and learn. Thanks again...I'll be more cautious. There sure are some pathetic people out there is this is how they get their jollies. Sheryl (family researcher of Boone and Marion County)
Has anyone gotten an attachment from someone on the boone County list that is a virus???? I have and just thought I'd ask to see if anyone has had an problems from this particular attachement being sent by someone on a Bellsouth email address.
I have had a report of there being a virus from an attachment posted by a list member whose name is Wendy. Rootsweb prevents attachments on the lists but if any of our list members receives an e-mail with a strange looking attachment with multiple extensions or a message with the first character being an underline, DO NOT OPEN IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!! PLEASE KEEP YOUR ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM CURRENT - AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK DO A SCAN. Marie List Mom
