    1. Re: [ARBOONE] There is a reason BLM cannot be accessed
    2. It is not just the BLM site. Every web site under the National Parks Service is down including the Civil War Solders and Sailors records. I have not heard when they will be back online, but they have to assure that Judge that the information he was trying to protect is not accessible. Earl D. House

    3. Howdy, Y'all! Rootsweb was bought by Ancestry in June 2000; I uploaded my GEDCOM to WorldConnect at Rootsweb, but all the notes I get from folks mention they found it at Ancestry. I have been a member of Ancestry for several years, but really haven't found a benefit from it, and plan to cancel. Just a tad tired of the effort it takes to find a darn thing at Ancestry (too many clicks to make me happy). However, using Rootsweb hasn't really changed much since Ancestry bought it--the buyout just made it possible for Rootsweb to continue, since they weren't able to keep up financially. As more people transcribe records, etc. and donate them to Rootsweb, in a few years' time, Ancestry and other "membership" sites will be scrambling even more... 3. I think its bad enough that a lot of sites are being taken over by Ancestry and other paying sites but what are we to do? Now, to boot Texas and California have removed their sites. Does that mean we have to go to their states for information and genealogy? Its a shame for people like me--fairly new at genealogy learning the ropes. Mary

    3. Received this today. Thought you'd all like to know why the www.glorecords.blm.gov land records site no longer is accessible. Have no further info yet, though. The various horrors I've dreamed up to inflict on each and every *&^%$#@! hacker, virus inventor, and the like are most unladylike and very definitely unprintable. However, I'm sure those of you who have "caught" a virus know what I'm thinking - and would probably agree. And now we have hackers and a US District Court Judge to thank for losing one of the better research sites on the Internet <Oh, drat> Mysty shakerag@mtnhome.com ********************************************** ----- Original Message ----- From: <MyRootsNBranches@aol.com> To: <AFHA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2002 6:59 AM Subject: [AFHA] There is a reason BLM cannot be accessed > If you are having problems accessing Bureau of Land Management ... there is a > reason...we have hackers to thank. 3. Hi Vonda, I have found that all the same gedcoms exist on Rootsweb and Ancestry's sites. I guess that was one of the perks of the buy out. It sure would've been nice if people were told their file was also going to end up on ancestry.com. That's part of why I will not submit mine. Plus they are never deleted unless the owner of the gedcom chooses to do so. So if a person dies or something, that gedcom still is online, unless they have instructions pertaining to it in their will. Also, if a person no longer has online access, for whatever reason, the gedcom still lives on, unless they deleted it beforehand. 3. Well, if you can't stand sitting thru some ads, along with some other minor stupidities... here's California birth and death records, along with some marriage records: http://www.vitalsearch-ca.com/ If you do a search with just a surname, you will not (or at least didn't, the last time I tried it) get all the possible matches. So if you have a first name or initial, that's better. I haven't tried this site for marriage indices, but now that I know they have that, I'm about to. 3. Hi Mary, A while back I joined the US GENWEB Helplist and do lookups here in Sacramento, CA. At times, when time permits, I post offers to the lists I am on (ARBOONE for instance) to try to help folks with their CA searching. Can I be of help to you (or anyone else) with CA search problems? Not that I know it all, but helping other folks does get my education advanced much faster and I'm not making all that much progress with my own stuff anyway... ron :) marylenoir <maryfrank@the-i.net> wrote: > I think its bad enough that a lot of sites are being taken over by Ancestry and other paying sites but what are we to do? I had her Mother as Elizabeth but maybe she was talking about Elizabeth being her grandmother. I have Ednas husband John Franklin Stout parents as Benjamin Franklin and Laura Booth Stout. They may have come from the DeQueen area. It was the same Booth as John Wilkes--probably a cousin or Aunt they may have hidden him according to Edna. Hi to Judy. Mary

    3. Some of you know I had a bad crash recently and on top of that I mistakenly put some gen files on the wrong kind of zip disk so now I can't get to them - like I really needed that. What I need is someonewho uses a PC who is willing to take my 100 meg zip files- or I can put them on a CD - open the files and then export them as gedcom files. Then I can import them using my application on my iMac as the gen files they were originally. Anybody have some spare time and a willingness to help? Thanks, gang. And Happy Holidays to all. Hope Santa visits all of you real good. Marie List Mom

    1. [ARBOONE] Offer to the list re CA
    2. ron stone
    3. To the ARBOONE listers: This is a repeat of last August. I have access to some resources that might help some of you who had people MIGRATING TO CA. I have been using them as a Helplist member here for quite a while now. I should give you a sort of inventory of these resources.. I can check for deaths in the county recorder's office. They are current and as far back as some spotty 1800s. From about 1895 on are pretty good and by 1905 are dead on (so to speak).. There is a film of all death certicates IN SACRAMENTO co. only .... as well as marriages in the county. All California counties have these, but I only can access Sacramento Co. I can transcribe the information and email it to you. The California History Rm has the STATE wide index for deaths from 1905 to 1939 with the rest being on line now. There are some CA soundex (aka miracode) census there also There are some newspaper archives from around the state. (I confess I don't do well in Los Angeles newspapers), but I don't mind trying. Sometimes folks are working on a one surname hunt and I have been able to copy the micro fiche index for that entire surname in the death index. Another fairly useful tool is the current statewide property owner index. It is only for parts of the '80 and '90s though. When I went on the Helplist I was just getting started myself and so only put down look ups on the death index. I can usually find other stuff now. I try to keep the search activity to lunch hours, so speed of answer will depend on volume of inquiry. No fees intended. Copy costs, postage and your envelope would be about it. So, let me know how I can be of help. ron in CA (Sacramento) researching: Bolding, Christopher, Golladay, HANCOCK, Ramsey , STONE, Woolbright, et al
