in 1979 i visited a cem in Marion or Boone co ark . and did not write the name on the pictures i took .Duh! when you went into the driveway the white frame Church was on the left and the Cem was on the right. this was an old cem. it May have been Pickard Cem. In 1850 Carrolton Hollow was probably right where it is today, Dolores. According to DeLorme's "Arkansas Atlas and Gazetteer" (1997), it's pretty much what Rt 14 follows from Sycamore west in today's Boone Co AR. It's up west of Lead Hill. Hi Marlene ~ It might be a bug in the McIntosh version as I can type in whatever page number & want to ~ the trick is not to "click" on the arrow after you've entered a page number, just hit the "enter" key. Should take you to the page you want instead of the next page. ~g~ Subj: Re: [ARBOONE] Ancestry, etc. Date: 01/15/2002 10:31:11 PM Pacific Standard Time From: marbos31@olywa.net (Marlene Bostrom) To: ARBOONE-L@rootsweb.com Gina, Are you able to select a page on the Census Images and jump ahead in Mr. Sid? I have the Macintosh version of Mr. Sid and I have to go through the pages one at a time. In other words, if I'm on page 3 and type in page 20 it will take me to page 4. Hi Janet ~ Yes, sometimes finding the exact page can be frustrating ~ I use a couple of techniques. First off, I generally try a general search at ancestry.com or genealogylibrary.com for the person I'm looking for. As they usually number their online images differently than even the census taker does, it helps to see if the folks I'm seeking pop up on one of those sites for the census I need. If that doesn't turn up anything, I try rootsweb for the county's archives to see if they have a census index posted or check census online. In the event I turn up absolutely nothing ~ which can happen ALOT on census records after 1870 that aren't indexed, I go to the first page of the first "town" or however they are broken down, and peek in on every 15th or so page ~ 1, 15, 31 ~ always keeping with an odd number because generally that is where the microfilmed page numbers appear ~ NOT the census takers page numbers ~ those are usually different in that the census taker number EACH page front & back, whereas the microfilmers numbered each page of the BOOK as a or b (ie pg 509a, 509b) - with the "a" side of the page being the right hand side of the page. Not always, but generally. I've had fairly good luck with locating the census pages to pages I've already found ~ as I figured I'd store them on my computer & be able to reference them much quicker than having to drag out my evps' full of "stuff" from the closet. I have learned to copy to my computer in both the MrSID file format AND jpeg format. MrSID format because it enables me to use the same blow-up tool to get really good images of specific parts of the pages, and jpeg because that allows me to print to size & share with others online. It does take some time this way, but figure it gives me a pretty good idea of who else was still in the area when my folks were. BTW - I received an email & telephone call regarding my subscription expiring. The email instructed me that I had 10 days to call & cancel ~ I got through to their 800 # after 2 tries. In the meantime, I received a telephone call asking me if I wanted to renew & was able to get a confirmation of my decision from this young man. Hope this helps some. ~gina~ > Subj: Re: [ARBOONE] Ancestry, etc. > Date: 01/03/2002 9:22:21 AM Pacific Standard Time > From: janet@cablelynx.com (Janet Lee) > To: Ginaburningsky@aol.com > > > > > Gina, > Could you tell the rest of us how to do this easily? Hello! This is the schedule of events being held by the White River Valley Historical Society for the first half of this year. Please note that the Bald Knobber reenactment schedule is included. 19 Jan (that's a week from this Sat)--Open House at the Old Taney County Jail, 1-4 pm. Come see the work that's been done towards restoration of the Jail, and what we're planning to do in the coming year. Refreshments provided. Old Jail Rummage Sale--16 Feb (bad weather date, 23 Feb) Proceeds will go to the Building Fund (we've got more to do on the building). I've got to check with the Prez (she's currently out of town), but I believe we'll start taking donated items after Open House. Auditions for "The League: Taney County Justice", a reenactment of the Bald Knobber era in 1880s Taney County--9 Mar & 16 Mar, beginning at 10 AM at the Old Jail. This is all-volunteer, the centerpiece of "Law Day 2002--Outlaw Roundup", and a whole bunch of fun. There are over 40 speaking roles in the play. We are also going to be doing a skit prior to the play centered around U.G. Johnson, who was the Taney County Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Deeds from 1910-1918--he often issued marriage licenses, and then, since he was a preacher, would turn around and marry the couples if they asked. That'll be fun! Rehearsals for "The League"--Sundays, 7 Apr thru 5 May, beginning at 1 pm, at Shelter #1 in Shadow Rock Park, or at the Jail, depending on the weather, etc. Full dress rehearsal (so we have time for discovering anything we need to get or fix) is 28 Apr. Mother's Day (12 May)--no rehearsal. However, we will be doing a "read-thru" on 13 May at 6 pm (no costumes or props), just to keep things warm in our minds. Countdown-- 17 May (Fri)--Set up begins at 12 PM. Full Dress Rehearsal, with full stage, sound, and props, 6 PM. 18 May (Sat)--this is the day of Forsyth's city-wide yard sale. Last year, we held Outlaw Roundup on this day, and it hurt us. Learning from the mistake, we'll still open the jail (Law Day) for visitors in the morning. We're also going to have another Full Dress Rehearsal, probably meeting about 10 AM, because while the cast is in character, the plan is to "go gallivantin'"...we'll go up to the town and do some BK/Anti-BK stuff in the middle of the crowds. Branson is holding "Plum Nelly Days" that weekend as well, and if I can get the logistics arranged, we'll go over to Branson and play, too. Then we'll come back and run through the play. 19 May (Sun)--Law Day 2002: Outlaw Roundup begins at Noon. Tents with other regional historical and genealogical societies will be open, and there will likely be some music. The Jail will be open for visitors, as well. The U.G. Johnson skit will begin around 1, and at 2 PM (ta da!) "The League: Taney County Justice" will begin. Bring your lawn chairs! Outlaw Roundup will end about 4-5 pm, and then the real work--cleaning up--will begin. I'm so excited, Greg's been laughing at my forgetfulness all morning...(I seem to be a constant source of amusement to him these days, anyway...) Feel free to pass this on, or call us at 417-239-1619 or 417-337-2816. Last year was such a great experience, we're doing it again! I too, must have been one of the fortunates with Ancestry.com. I've learned how to navigate their census images & store them ~ have found it to be so much better than ordering a film, waiting for 2-3 weeks for it to come in ~ specially on films that I want to view say an entire district. And being able to go back to my computer & blow up the census for a tight - read, that is great. Much easier to do @ home than at the library. I've never had a billing problem with them, and on the two occasions I had to call their subscriber help number, they were able to walk me right through the problem without a hitch. I sometimes wonder if it isn't academic about submitting my family's info ~ even if I don't submit it to Ancestry ~ anywhere I do submit or share it, someone else is bound to submit it sooner or later (in my case, several have submitted it almost as soon as I've released it). ~gina in Long Beach CA~ May 2002 be a great year for you and your families. please visit my website at www.burningskyenterprises.com family album - http://www.geocities.com/ginaburningsky4/burningskyent_genealogy.html

I must have been one of the lucky ones. In October 2001, I received an e-mail from Ancestry.com that my subscription would be up for renewal in two weeks. I dialed the 800 number given in the e-mail and got through to a fellow named Erick. He told me he had cancelled the subscription and gave me a confirmation number. I received my credit card billing for two months and there has not a been charge on it. One statement on the e-mail said " Please note that cancellations must happen over the phone so we can verify that the actual account holder is canceling the membership. " I am sorry and it is too bad some had a bad experience with the company. I am not affiliated with the company in any manner. I will agree, I subscribed to the census thing and found it too hard to work though and find anything. And I also am sorry that all the free stuff is going fast. I am thankful for all the fellow researchers that have helped me along the way. I do have one "brick wall" named Parris J. Owens. He was killed in Batesville, Independence Co., AR in 1861. Oral history has it he was brought back to the home place, which we figured is Newton Co., MO. My Aunt, who is the researcher, always thought they were centered in Newton and McDonald Co., MO. I found when I went on the Internet, they were siblings also in Benton, Carroll and Boone Cty, AR. Fellow researchers helped me find that information. Mary, if some of us Oldies have learned nothing else from the Internet, we *have* learned that it's best - nay, mandatory - to check every single fact stated in pedigrees and family trees on sites such as Ancestry, World Family Tree, LDS, genealogical forums, ad infinitum. And, we've known for a long time that there's more than one way to skin a cat. If you can't find it in one place, go someplace else - or attack the problem from another direction. There's bunches of us Oldies out there that are more than willing to help Newbies, to share sources, to try to point to a variety of methods and places. Many of us have had to do it the old-fashioned ways. Sometimes it meant actually going to a state. Usually it could be done by mail (births, deaths, marriages, military service, even census, for instance) and telephone. Some historical and genealogical societies and groups even had (some still do) lending libraries from which you could borrow books for a couple of weeks for a small fee. (Check out Heritage Quest http://www.heritagequest.com - they used to do this - still do with microfilm.) By my email, I see you already have the vital records URL for California (I've used it - it's good) as well as a fellow willing to do "on site" look ups. For the most part we're one big happy family of family tree climbing researchers and are more than willing to share, to be helpful. All you have to do is ask. Someone, somewhere will read your request and be able to help. Best of luck. If you want to cancel Ancestry subscription, you have to look up the number in their terms of service page and call it. Even if you tell them you don't want to renew when they call you, they will still debit your credit card or checking account. The number to call to cancel is almost impossible to get through to a person. They are really running a GYP joint with the automatic renewal of subscriptions. My credit card refused their charges so they debited my checking account. I have filed a complaint with the BBB in Salt Lake City. Be sure you fully read their multipage terms of service documents. Hi again, listers, I will attest to Ron's skills at digging up the impossible. He's been a big help for me, and really put himself out when he didn't have to. Thank you, Ron! :) Now here's my offer to the list. Colorado charges an extra $10 for marriage records. It's only $15 for Colorado residents. If you live out of state, they charge you $25. I don't know if it's the same for divorce, birth and death records. So, if anyone needs a Colorado record and they know they're being charged more for being an out of stater, let me know and I'll get the record for $10 less. Know what really upset me? I took one of those free trial things from Ancestry and when I got on there I found my own information that I had not given them. I also subscribed to their online Census information and it was impossible for me to read so I cancelled. There is no reason they cannot print this Census so it is easy to read except they don't want to because they apparently are worried that someone will copy it and put it online. Seems it is acceptable for them to take my information but not for me to take theirs. ----- Original Message ----- From: marylenoir <maryfrank@the-i.net> To: <ARBOONE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 02, 2002 2:14 PM Subject: [ARBOONE] Texas/California > I think its bad enough that a lot of sites are being taken over by Ancestry and other paying > sites but what are we to do? Now, to boot Texas and California have removed their sites. Does that mean we have to go to their states for information and genealogy? > Its a shame for people like me--fairly new at genealogy learning the ropes. > Mary > > > ==== ARBOONE Mailing List ==== > Stop and think a second -- ALL queries go to the mail list if you are posting to the message boards. > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
