    1. [ARBOONE] Pension record for Sarrah SAMPLEY Manes - widow of Claiburn
    2. For those of you descended of Claiburn who haven't seen this ~ here's some "tidbits" from the pension file of Sarrah SAMPLEY Manes - wife of Claiburn. Grab your pencils & take notes :) ~gina~ 1) Her maiden name was SAMPLEY ( 2) She & Claiburn were married by a JP by the name of Esq. Davis at Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN on 13 October 1838, and there was no church or public record of this marriage ~ (Affidavits dated 04 Jan 1893, 27 Sept 1892, 02 Sept 1892). 3) The following people supplied affidavits for Sarrah vouching for her being Claiburn's wife: B.F. Henley - resided Searcy Co. ARK - dated 02 Sep 1892 (W.H. Still JP) Jesse M. Baker - resided St. Joe, Searcy Co., ARK - 27 Mar 1893 - W.H. Still JP G.W. Williams - Snowball, Searcy Co. ARK, - 10 Sept 1892 - W.H. Still, JP J.T. Scott - Snowball, Searcy Co., ARK - 10 Sept 1892 - W.H. Still, JP (NOTE - Mr. Scott states he was present when Claiburn died but does not say what the cause of death was - durn it!!) Harriet McNair - St. Joe, Searcy Co., ARK - 05 Jan 1893 - W.H. Still, JP. Harriet states she is 60 yrs of age, and has known the claimant (Sarah) since she Harriet was 7 years old. She was not present when her brother married, but went by his word that he & Sarah were married. J.C. McNair - St. Joe, Searcy Co., ARK - 27 Sept 1892 - W.H. Still, JP. (NOTE J.C. stated he first became acquainted with Claiburn & Sarah in 1847 and that he knew the claimant & her husband for 40 years) David Barnett - St. Joe, Searcy Co. ARK - 12 Aug 1892 - W.H. Still, JP W.L. Henley - St. Joe, Searcy Co., ARK - 12 Aug 1892 - W.H. Still, JP 4) Naturally, Claiburn's name is spelled a variety of ways - both his first & surname (whatdaya expect???) though in an Affidavit of Sarah Manes dated 17 Aug 1893, she stated "that to the best of her knowledge her husband spelled his first name CLABOURN" 5) Claburn's physical description: Black hair, blue eyes & fair complexion (Affidavit of Sarah Manes dated 18 Feb 1893) 6) She received a pension award of $8.00/mo commencing July 27, 1892 7) Claiburn enlisted in Bradley Co. TN 8) He & Sarah & family lived in 1) Bradley Co. TN, 2) DeCalb Co. Alabama, 3) back to Bradley Co. TN, 4) Searcy Co. ARK, 5) Washington Co. ARK, 6) Scott Co. ARK, 7) back to Searcy Co. ARK, 8) Cedar Co. MO (this is confirmed by pension records of Frederick Wm Carsten, 2nd husband of daughter Neoma/Naomi Manes), 9) back to Searcy Co. ARK, 10) Taney Co., MO, 11) Boone Co. ARK, 12) Cook Co. TX, 13) Madison Co., AR, finally 14) returning to Searcy Co. ARK (no dates yet but have other correlating evidence to support alot of these moves). 9) Claiburn was born in HAWKINS Co. TN on 20 October 1814 10) Clabourn & Sarah's house burned down according to an affidavit of Sarah dated 21 March 1893. This fire must have happened after his death as she cited the fire as reason why she could not supply a sample of his signature stating everything being burnt. She further related that Clabourn's bible was burnt in a house fire of W.R. ROBERTS, but did not give dates of these fires. 11) We have a "birth certificate" for Sarah - she declares she was born on the 15th of July 1824, but doesn't say where & who her parents were (Declara. of 12 Aug 1892) 12) Claiburn served as a Private in Capt. Elliott's Co. Tenn. Vols., Cherokee Dist. from 01 Nov. 1837 to May 9, 1838 (Widow's Pension #268 filed Aug 24, 1892) witnessed by E.L. Phelps, J.W. Rogers of St. Joe, ARK I have the copies of both Claiburn's military records & Sarah's pension records. If you want copies of these, there are 46 pages total. If you'd like copies, email me off-list. ~gina~ please visit my website at www.burningskyenterprises.com family album - http://www.geocities.com/ginaburningsky4/burningskyent_genealogy.html

    3. Dolores I, too, have a George Manley (1859-1918) from Boone County. He was married ca 1876/7 to Delilah Patricia Roberts. He is shown in the 1910 Taney Co MO census with his wife listed as Sarah rather than Delilah. My records show that Delilah didn't die until 1922 at Springdale AR. So I am not sure if there is a census taker's error, or if they parted company at some point. He was buried in the Manley cemetery which was moved by the Corps of Engineers before Bulls Shoals was built to a cemetery closer to Lead Hill, AR. Their children were William E, John R, Mary B, GeorgeAnn, Laura B, Minta/Mandy, and Thomas M. Does anything here look familiar? Our George and Deilah were in Boone Co, AR; then went to Taney Co, MO; and purchased land near Ft. Gibson IT at one point. Gayle gayle1@wheatstate.com
