1. [ARBOONE] FW: Associated Press story on new Mtn. Meadows book by Bagley
2. LM Fancher
3. Lynn-Marie Fancher -----Original Message----- Sent: Monday, August 12, 2002 9:28 AM Subject: Associated Press story on new Mtn. Meadows book by Bagley FYI, this story moved on the Associated Press wire Friday for newspapers around the country to use at their leisure. This version ran in The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, Aug. 11. It also ran the same day in the Ventura (Calif.) County Star. Chris Smith Historian Takes New Look at Massacre Sunday, August 11, 2002 BY C.G. WALLACE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Almost 145 years after the darkest chapter in Utah's history -- the murders of 120 California-bound pioneers by a group of Mormon settlers and their Indian allies -- a new book laying blame for the massacre at the feet of Mormon prophet Brigham Young is causing a sensation in Salt Lake City. Church historians vehemently disagree with the premise of Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows, but author Will Bagley said circumstantial evidence points to Young's involvement. "Claiming that Brigham Young had nothing to do with Mountain Meadows is akin to arguing that Abraham Lincoln had nothing to do with the Civil War," Bagley writes. "His own words reveal that both before and after the massacre, Brigham Young recognized the likely results of his acts." On the shelves only about two weeks, Bagley's book already is a best seller locally. At The King's English Book Shop, the book is "selling like hotcakes," said manager Doug Jenson. Sam Weller's Books, which specializes in western and Mormon history, was almost out of its first two shipments. "We were a bit taken aback by the demand," said Sam Weller's general manager, Dennis Evans. And, after insisting earlier that the Sept. 11, 1857, massacre should be a closed chapter, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints now is planning to publish its own book on the killings. Author Richard Turley, the church's chief historian, said his book will make clear that Young did not plan the murders. The victims of the Mountain Meadows massacre were a group of men, women and children on their way from Arkansas to California. Young at the time was the church's prophet and president, its second, and the man who brought the faith's headquarters West in 1847 after founder Joseph Smith was murdered in Illinois. Under Young's leadership, the territory that would become Utah operated as a "theo-democracy," with Young as its head. Ten years after the Mormons arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, however, the U.S. Army was preparing to squelch Utah's pervasive anti-Americanism and its practice of polygamy, Bagley writes. As troops drew closer, Utah trained its own military and stockpiled guns, ammunition and food. In the midst of growing war hysteria, wagon trains continued to move through the territory on the way to California, including the pioneers from northwest Arkansas. By coincidence, a Mormon woman named Eleanor McLean returned to Utah from Arkansas about this time, with a tale of the murder of her former spiritual husband, beloved Mormon leader Parley Pratt, by her former temporal husband, an Arkansas man. And rumors about the Arkansas wagon train members' involvement in Pratt's murder spread across the state. Bagley, who writes a Utah history column for The Salt Lake Tribune, said this coincidence helped seal the pioneers' fates. "Brigham Young considered this a righteous act of vengeance," said Bagley. But he said Young also wanted to send a message to the United States that he controlled the road to California. Bagley said the massacre was planned and organized before the emigrants arrived in southern Utah. The Mormon settlers and Indians ambushed the wagon train of 40 men, 30 women and 70 children. The emigrants circled their wagons and dug in, surrendering days later when the Mormon settlers promised them safety if they disarmed. Instead, the Mormon militia and the Indians killed them. Seventeen children under the age of 7 were spared and adopted into the community. It was not until two decades after the murders that anyone was held accountable for the slaughter: John D. Lee, whom Bagley and many others believe was the Mormon church's scapegoat. Moments before a firing squad executed Lee, the condemned man sat on the edge of his coffin and denounced Young. " 'I studied to make this man's will my pleasure for 30 years. See, now, what I have come to this day! I have been sacrificed in a cowardly, dastardly manner,' " Bagley quotes Lee as saying. In May, Turley, the church's chief official historian, announced he was writing his own chronicle of the massacre. Turley's book, to be titled Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, is tentatively set for publication in 2003 by the Oxford University Press. Turley maintains Young had no part in the massacre, calling it an independent plan by an isolated group of settlers. Those in southwest Utah had heard stories about the bad behavior of the approaching wagon train. The community, however, was divided about what to do with the travelers, and decided to send a message to Salt Lake City and ask Brigham Young for guidance, Turley said. But before the messenger could leave, the emigrants were ambushed. He said, however, he would explain in the book why that ambush happened before the messenger left, but declined to elaborate further. Bagley said his research extends and confirms the private conclusions of blame for the massacre reached by Juanita Brooks, the Mormon historian whose 1950 book, The Mountain Meadows Massacre, has stood as the first accurate account of the atrocity. He quotes from a 1968 letter Brooks wrote to a University of Utah librarian that she had "come to feel that Brigham Young was directly responsible for this tragedy." When church President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated a new monument at the site of the massacre in 1999, he made clear that he did not believe Young had a hand in the violence. "I sit in the same chair that Brigham Young occupied as the president of the church at the time of the tragedy. There is no question in my mind that he was opposed to what happened. Had there been a faster means of communication, it never would have happened and history would have been different," Hinckley said at the dedication. He added: "Let the book of the past be closed."

The meeting will start at 2:00 p.m. and there will be an informal function afterwards at the Carrollton Park. One of the guest speakers will be Ms. Shannon Novak who did the forensic studies on the bones that were uncovered at the Meadows in August 1999. 2. I started searching this several months ago. I currently have 1 1/2 books. None of which covers the names listed. However, Here are some good links on Baptist Research. Arkedelphia (University) is the Depository for Baptist records in Arkansas. They did not have the Buffalo Baptist Association Records except for the one I have give the information from. The other partial came to me 25 years ago from someone who got it from someone else and so far, no one knows where it came from. I have contacted the Springfield Library and they say they do not have any. But here is the Arkedelphia link: Special Collections - OBU Library I understand (but not positive) that Rolla Missouri is the depository for Missouri. Hope this helps someone. 1. [ARBOONE] Boone-Marion County Arkansas from Bedford County, Tennessee
2. When I was in Tennessee 2 weeks ago, I noticed the many names which I know to be in Boone and Marion County in the early 1900s and before in Tennessee. Tonya and I visited the Rutherford, Bedford and Coffee County libraries and court houses. Bedford is about to publish their book. Here is the link: BEDFORD COUNTY FAMILY HISTORY BOOK It is $60.00 and it has a link listing the families listed in it. I thought this might help someone. Reta

3. Rita My understanding is that Boone County came from Carroll and from Marion County - not Madison County. But mostly from Carroll. The Boone Co, AR website has maps of the counties for each of the census years - 1840 forward and from looking at those maps, Boone came mostly from Carroll and a little bit of Marion. Hope this helps you. Joy Huskey >--- Original Message --- >From: RPSODAPOP@aol.com >To: ARBOONE-L@rootsweb.com >Date: 8/5/02 3:40:39 PM > >I know that Boone county hasn't always been Boone >county. 3. Reta, your "old" book is mostly correct. Boone Co was created primarily from Carroll Co 9 April 1869 - with a little bit of Madison thrown in. However, the boundary between Boone Co and Marion Co wasn't defined until 9 Dec 1875. It was redefined around 1880 or 1881, I think. Basically, this final change in the Boone-Marion line returned a strip 3 sections wide and the length of the boundary to Marion Co. That's what's made for some real confusion on both sides of that boundary. Harrison is in Boone Co and Gaither (over around Gaither Mountain) is in Boone Co, but were, before 1869, in Carroll Co. Green Co is way over in northeastern AR around Paragould. No where near Boone Co. Next time you get to a library, check a copy of "Map Guide to United States Federal Census 1790-1920 by Thorndale and Dollarhyde. It has maps of every state for every census (every 10 years) which shows the changes in county boundaries. It's an absolute delight for this sort of information. If you can ever get your hands on a copy of it, "Biennial Report of Secretary of State [AR] 1925-26" gives explicit information on the dates of county formations and subsequent changes in boundary lines. That's the source of the county data in the front of "Genealogies of Marion Co Families 1811-1900." Your DeShields bunch was in Marion Co for a while - doubt they were as far away as Madison Co. which is over around Huntsville and west of Newton Co which is due south of (now) Boone Co. 2. Would like to find some of the descendants of the Crow family and other families who's ancestors attended Baptist Churches in the North Arkansas area. This included Newton and Carroll Counties and some churches as far away as War Eagle in Washington County. I would like to transcribe these for the county websites. Please contact me if your family has even one. I now have 1 1/2 issues. Looking for more. 1. [ARBOONE] Another Obit from 1897 Buffalo Baptist Assoc Minutes - CROW
2. You just received the notice of finding Handy and Nancy's obit. but I can't be so selfish as not to include the other obituary which was in that years minutes. They printed 2 families that year. Both a husband and wife for each family. Here is the other one. JAMES CROW was born in Roane Co., Tenn., Oct 19, 1825, professed a hope in Christ in 1865, joining the Primitive Baptist church at Sweeten's Cove soon after his conversion. He remained a member with that body till his removal to Arkansas., coming to Ark, in the ''70s. He put his letter into the Crooked Creed Church of the same faith, where he held his membership till his death, July 1, 1896. Always attending church promptly, he became on of its most valuable members, being clerk for a number of years and delegate to almost every association. He was married to Nancy Beane, Oct. 29, 1846, ever living a faithful husband and devoted father. He leaves several children and a host of friends to mourn his departure. NANCY CROW, wife of the beloved brother, Jas. Crow, was born in Marion Co., Tenn, June 20, 1828. Joining the church with her husband in 1865, she lived a true Christian life, always discharging her duty with alacrity and delight. thereby proving what she claimed. She departed this life in Jan. 1894, leaving a companion, several children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her absence. (Hope these obits and Handy and Nancy's can be added to the County websites) Reta DeShields Parton 1808 W Huntsville Springdale, Ar 72762 1-479-751-6947 rpsodapop@aol.com daughter of D W DeShields & Cora Irene Hamilton DeShields granddaughter of Dennie DeShields and Ruby Lee Austin DeShields gggranddaughter of John Wesley DeShields and Frankey Green DeShields ggggrandaughter of Handy DeShields and Nancy Womack DeShields

2. Buffalo Baptist Assoc 1897 - Handy & Nancy DeShields Obituary This I have been hunting for 25 years! Minutes of the Annual Session of The Buffalo Baptist Association of Primitive Baptists, Held with Macedonia Church, Boone County, Ark. September 18th, 19th, and 20th, 1897. HANDY DESHIELDS was born in Coffee Co., Middle Tenn, Feb. 28, 1819. Came to Ark, in 1835. Professed a hope in Christ in 1837, and united with the Primitive Baptist Church. He always lived a devoted Christian, and was prompt to fill his seat on all occasions. He was married to Nancy Wamic, March 14, 1843. Departed this life Feb. 9th, 1897. and in his death we feel that our loss is his eternal gain. NANCY DESHIELDS was born in Marion Co., Tenn, in 1827. Embraced Christianity and joined the Baptist Church with her husband, always living a devoted Christian. Slept January 25, 1897. She leaves eight children, a host of relatives and friends to mourn her absence. NOTE: I believe the birth place of Nancy was Marion Co., Arkansas. These minutes were written in Boone County, Arkansas (next door to Marion Co). Since Handy was born in Tenn. I believe this was just picked up this way. All census' since 1850 has stated she was born in Arkansas. SPECIAL ATTENTION: NANCY died January 25, 1897 and Handy died 15 days later on February 9th, 1897. 3. Several years ago someone mailed me obituaries from the 1980's of Anna Estelle Bell (daughter of Henry and Mirta Hudson Manley) and her husband John T Bell that had been published in a Boone Co newspaper. The couple lived at Chetopa, KS. I am curious as to how they might be related to my Manley family. If any of this family is monitoring the list, I would appreciate hearing from them. Thanks Gayle gayle1@wheatstate.com
