William Willis Smithwick, b. Nov. 1824 in Georgia. Was last known to have been living in Boone Co... Ark. near Harrison in 1880. I need some help locating his burial. He probably died before 1890 in the area around Bellefonte. I have not seen his name on any cemetery index. I would love to make contact with someone who could give me more geographical information about that area. Perhaps someone knows the names of a funeral home that may have some information. I know it is a long shot. Even a grocery store or a description of that community around the late 1880s would be helpful. Carol in Texas
Hi everyone. I just finished indexing the "Minutes of Wm. Frierson Bivouac No 8 Shelbyville, Tenn. The book was published by the Bedford County Historical Society, Shelbyville, Tenn. It did not have an index. I felt this was too important a work not to be indexed so researchers could find their family. This group of Civil War Veterans started out as only the confederates. They assisted with applications to the veterans home, published obituaries for fallen comrads, and made sure the area military graves were decorated and services held each Memorial Day. They played an important part of their community. Although it was based in Shelbyville, it covered areas in the surrounding county and much information about conventions they attended. Check out the index and see if your family is there. There is many different spellings. Be sure and read NOTES first as this will explain more. There is also some deeds and wills which concern the McBride family. This is under the land button and the Frierson is under military. If there is anyone descended from James Fancher and Elizabeth Carlock and would like to participate in a helping to build my Black Fancher data base, please let me know. For those outside of Arkansas unfamiliar with the term Black Fancher it simply refers to those descended from the above mentioned James Fancher. His brother, Alexander Fanchers line were known as the Red Fanchers). This information would especially help me fill in the blanks where Paul B. Fanchers book leaves off. Pauls book stopped with male lines so there is no data for those descending from the female lines. Also, we are in the process of organizing a Black Fancher reunion this coming summer/fall in NW Arkansas. Anyone interested in attending that, please let me know as well. dixon@europa.com <mailto:dixon@europa.com> Lynn-Marie Fancher
Looking for information on Newton Rounsavell and Joseph Q. Walling family living in Boone Co Harrison Twp in 1900 census. Mary Ann Thomas
Can anyone tell me what a BRAKEBILL CHURCH is? I have found reference to one in Murray County, GA and at least one in Arkansas. Thank you. Phyllis
Rhonda, go to www.familysearch.org. Click on US 1880 census in the left column. Fill in the blanks that come up using Silas F Henson for the name. You'll find him in North Fork Township, Baxter Co AR. He's the only one by that name in the entire state of AR in 1880. You can use states other than AR to search for him too. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon To: MO-AR-WRV-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, January 10, 2003 1:14 PM Subject: Bald Knobber Stories, Verifcation of Manes & Brown Shootings Finally, I have found verification of my granduncle John Wesley Manes, Jr's death by outlaw James Brown as was told to me by relatives!! I found the reference to it in the book 'Bald Knobbers, Vigilantes on the Ozarks Frontier" by Mary Hartman & Elmo Ingenthron, pgs 196 & 198. .........."an outlaw skulked into MO a step ahead of AR law officers. James Brown, who lived near Forsyth, was sought for robbing and burning a store at Lead Hill, AR. He crossed the stae line near Protem, where he broke into several houses & stole food & valuables. Sheriff McHaffie led a small search party to hunt for Brown at his grandfather's house near Taney City. On the morning of 20th Aug 1886, Brown heard them ride up & hid in a hollow a quarter mile north. The possee spread out to search the property. When 20 year old James (sic) Manusstarted down into the hollow, Brown shot him in the stomach. Manus fell to the ground, and Brown climbed the hill toward him. Reaching the wounded Manus, Brown said, "Well, I'v dot you, and I'll get the rest of them with your rifle." He grabbed for the deputy's Winchester. Although badly wounded, Manus held onto his gun & fired 5 shots. One bullet struck Brown in the left arm, and 2 more grazed his side. But the outlaw, his arm almost blown off, ran away!! Sheriff McHaffie summoned Dr. E. V. Baldwin to treat his dying officer. The angry sheriff beefed up his posse. All that day & thru the night, bet 50 & 10 armed men stalked the criminal. At around eiht the next morning, the hunters discovered that Brown had raided a farmer's springhouse for butter & other food. Abt a mile away, James Bunch and another searcher tracked Brown's bloody trailto a pile of brush at a fence corner. Afraid of Brown's gun, the pursuers yelled him name & ordered him to surrender. He rose & staggered away. Bunch fired, hitting Brown in the back, and the outlaw died in a patch of dogwood sprouts."........ "An hour later, James Manus also died of his wounds. The sheriff dismissed hid posse.....and "rode off toward Swan Creek. FOLLOW UP - Janice Soutee Looney told me that John had been mis-identified as James. From another cousin I was told that John Manes was taken to Chub Bennett's 2-story house which was nearbyand that he died there. Is that place still standing? Which family of Browns lived near Taney City? Where James Brown's grandparents lived? Does anyone know? I think I may be related to him also. Sharon in AZ texsam@cox.net

Hello to all, I promised to let you all know the out come of this and I am writing to let you know that they found the girl yesterday afternnoon. Joshua and Ashley can now be laid to rest and hopefully her mother can now try to find some peace of mind. I would like to thank the list managers for allowing me to post these e-mails. If it was'nt for all the responses and support from everyone who was concerned I would not have continued to post. Hello to all, Again I must thank everyone for their support. Alot of people have been writing me for details and I have not had them until now. I must warn that if you are faint hearted to delete this message now. I am writing this through many tears. Joshua was found about 7 am by 2 fishermen at the Des Plains River in Ill. near Joliet not in Mich. like I was told earlier. This was not told on the news , but the family gets the terrible details. he was shot in the head and a chain was wrapped around him to wiegh him down. Odds are the same was done to his sister but she is yet to be found. My husband is beside himself along with the rest of the family. I am passing all messages to the mother in hopes of sending her some comfort. The best place to go for info would be www.google.com go to news and type in Gleeson. All newspaper articles can be found there up to date. I am sorry to send this, but as I said, some people have been asking. Again, we appreciate all the support and prayers. Sandy noordhof@swbell.net
