    1. [ARBOONE] Offer to Boone list re California
    2. ron stone
    3. I joined the list to research my Stone line for the period of 1867 and on. Knowing how frustrating it is to be so far from the field of search, I have offered to do lookups here in CA for any one who may have a need. I will extend that offer again now. No fee. Costs are acceptable. I can check death dates statewide, find many obits or funeral notices statewide, and can look at various records though not much available birth or divorce or even probate now due to relocation of records or restriction of access. ron stone in Sacramento You have added to the subscriber list of: ARBOONE-L@rootsweb.com the following mail address: blueoak@ix.netcom.com By default, copies of your own submissions will be returned. Welcome to the ARBOONE mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to ARBOONE as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to ARBOONE-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to ARBOONE-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to ARBOONE-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to ARBOONE-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to ARBOONE-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below. -- >From blueoak@ix.netcom.com Mon Feb 17 22:27:02 2003 >Received: from mail.rootsweb.com (mail.rootsweb.com [192.168.16.34]) > by lists2.rootsweb.com (8.12.4/8.12.4) with ESMTP id h1I5R2GI002825 > for <ARBOONE-L-request@lists7.rootsweb.com>; Mon, 17 Feb 2003 22:27:02 -0700 >Received: from granger.mail.mindspring.net (granger.mail.mindspring.net [207.69.200.148]) > by mail.rootsweb.com (8.12.4/8.12.4) with ESMTP id h1I5R1Gh023473 > for <ARBOONE-L-request@rootsweb.com>; Mon, 17 Feb 2003 22:27:01 -0700 >Received: from 216-119-004-045.jps.net ([216.119.4.45] helo=blueoak) > by granger.mail.mindspring.net with smtp (Exim 3.33 #1) > id 18l0Hj-0002am-00 > for ARBOONE-L-request@rootsweb.com; Tue, 18 Feb 2003 00:27:15 -0500 >Message-Id: <2.2.32.20030218052705.0118857c@127.0.0.1> >X-Sender: blueoak/pop.ix.netcom.com@127.0.0.1 >X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 2.2 (32) >Mime-Version: 1.0 >Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" >Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 21:27:05 -0800 >To: ARBOONE-L-request@rootsweb.com >From: ron stone <blueoak@ix.netcom.com> >Subject: subscribe > >subscribe >

    1. [ARBOONE] Obituaries from Lead Hill area from 1954 to 1990
    2. I have been very fortunate for several of the older people of the Lead Hill area to entrust me with their collections. The family of Alma Gaines loaned me her collection of obituaries and funeral cards she collected of her friends and acquaintances from the Lead Hill area. I think she put it together in the mid 1980s so there is just a few in the 1950s and 1960s but more in later years. Many of them were born in the late 1800s and included people in the Peel, Lead Hill, Harrison, Diamond City, Bergman, and Omaha. Some include both an obituary and funeral card. There is 289 files but some have 2 files -- one for obituary and one for funeral card. We have put the index up on the Rock Fence Genealogy sight. If you find one you want, please email me at rpsodapop@aol.com and I will send you a JPG file for the ones you request. Be patient as the camera I took these pictures with is a large format camera. I have left them as large as I could so you can get a good print from it. Any of the sights I am sending this to has permission to link to our sight if they want to. <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jmwtlw/index.htm">Rock Fence Genealogy - Main</A> or <A HREF="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jmwtlw/index.htm">http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jmwtlw/index.htm</A> I would like to say Thank you to the Homer and Alma Gaines family for sharing some pretty important documents of history with me and allowing me to share them with you. 1. [ARBOONE] DeShields - Stiles - Donnell - McKey
    2. On July 4, 1905 or 1907, Sarah Stiles DeShields and one or two of her children drowned when a hard rain started while they were at the Lead Hill Picnic. They started home but when they came to the Raley place, the stream had swollen and several waited to cross. Sarah's husband Seib DeShields (a very strong and capable person) made the decision to cross the stream to get his family out of the weather and before the stream got higher. This was a bad decision. The wagon turned over and Sarah and their child died. I understand the child was a girl and older. Some stories say two children. The problem is, I do not know who the child or children are. I have checked the census records and at this time I cannot determine which child it is. I believe it was a girl. Sarah says she had 9 children and 7 were living in 1900. All 7 are accounted for. I was told by an older relative that a child named Babe was buried beside Sarah. That Babe was retarded but she was not a baby but called Babe. Also it was told Babe was an excellant house keeper. I suspect since she and Sarah was buried together that she is the child. Can anyone help me on this? This is the ones that might be possible: Margaret DeShields married G C Donnell in 1900 Mary E DeShields was said to have married John Richey but I question this She was born in 1880. Cora S DeShields married Lonzo McKey in 1899 I feel it was probably Mary E DeShields who was called Babe. Can anyone help me on this? I suspect one of the local papers wrote something on this as it was a tragedy, but I have not found anything on it. It is just family stories. Would like to correspond with the Donnell and McKey families. Have information to share. Reta

    1. [ARBOONE] Re: Manes family (Malinda Manes Bristow - dau of Claiburn & Sarrah)
    2. Gina Thomas Patterson
    3. Hi Erroll: Boy, let me tell you this Manis family is fun to research! Okay, my interest in the Bristow family began when I found a P.J. Manus living with this family in Boone Co., Arkansas at the time of the 1870 census. PJ was female, and though I couldn't fit her at the time, I sure could the wife of George Bristow - Malinda. Her stats matched that of Claiburn & Sarrah's daughter Malinda. In tracking down what I could of the kids listed in the Bristow family in 1870, I found a California Death Index record for their son, Seaborn Ray Manes which lists his mother's maiden name as "Manis". So, I think this is pretty much a slam-dunk, it's just a matter of gathering the data on this Bristow family now. I have been, however, unable to locate them in the 1880 Census so far. ~gina~ --- erroll <erroll@prodigy.net> wrote: > Leaves > > Gina: > > I seen your posting on the Searcy Co. forum > regarding Malinda Manes. > > First, I am not a Manes researcher. 3. I'm hoping some of you on the list may be able to help me track this family down: George Bristow b. ca 1840, Arkansas married ca 1861-1862 to Malinda Manes b. ca 1844 Bradley Co., Tennessee? to parents Clabourn L. & Sarah Sampley Manes. 1) George & Malinda had: 2) Nancy H. Bristow b. 1862, Arkansas 3) George S. Bristow b. 1864, Missouri 4) Seaborn Ray Bristow b. 01 Jan 1866, Missouri, d. 07 November 1940, San Francisco, CA 5) Mary J. Bristow b. 1868, Arkansas 6) Joseph B. Bristow b. May 1870, Arkansas, d. 06 Jan 1960 Jackson Co., Oregon At the time of the 1870 U.S. Census this family was residing in Washington Twp., Boone Co., Arkansas. But with the history of the Manes family, this family could have gone back to Searcy Co., I haven't found them on the 1880 census yet ~ sure would like to. The Manes family also put in appearances in Taney Co.. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated. ~gina~ visit my website http://www.burningskyenterprises.com, click on Family Album

    1. [ARBOONE] LDS Church Objects to Lease Terms
    2. LM Fancher
    3. Lynn-Marie Fancher TUESDAY March 04, 2003 LDS Church Objects to Lease Terms BY CHRISTOPHER SMITH THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE WASHINGTON -- The LDS Church has raised numerous objections to a pair of draft leases offered by the federal government to allow the Salt Lake City-based church to manage Martin's Cove, a publicly owned historical site in southwestern Wyoming that Mormon faithful consider sacred ground. A nine-page response recently delivered by representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Bureau of Land Management and Wyoming's congressional delegation underlines the church's continued desire to purchase Martin's Cove outright, rather than lease the land from the government. "After careful review, we do not feel the two draft BLM leases offer the church much in exchange for a contractual obligation to perform the public responsibilities of the BLM at the Cove," wrote Lloyd Larsen, president of the Riverton, Wyo., stake of the LDS Church and leader of the church's effort to obtain the area Mormons venerate as the site of the deaths of an 1856 pioneer handcart company bound for Utah. "In fact, it will be difficult to craft a lease extending permissions, rights or privileges to the church at the Cove that will not be challenged administratively or in federal court." In a Feb. 14 cover letter to Wyoming's congressional delegation, Larsen said that while the formal response raises several issues of concern to the church, "please know we continue to consider the concept of a lease agreement as a viable alternative for the Cove." But, in arguments that seem tempered by the successful First Amendment legal challenges brought against the Main Street Plaza project in downtown Salt Lake City, church officials fear a lease of Martin's Cove will be subject to public disagreement and protracted litigation over how much control BLM can convey to the LDS Church at Martin's Cove while the land remains in public ownership. "In this instance, no bright line exists that determines how to balance the interests of the public and the church," Larsen wrote. A lease of public land is subject to National Environmental Policy Act review, an extensive public involvement procedure that includes hearings, impact studies and formal appeals. Larsen wrote that while the church understands the need for public comment, BLM has not shown that the benefits of a lease would be sufficient for the church to "engage in such a difficult, costly and protracted process." The church also wants lease terms longer than the 20 years BLM has proposed, although Larsen emphasized "the church does not seek to build a visitors' center or other structures that would change the natural character of the Cove." Instead, the church wants authority over the publicly owned land 55 miles southwest of Casper because it is interested in "preserving the ecology and beauty of the Cove and in encouraging visitors to respect its history." Although some scholars contend Martin's Cove has been erroneously mapped, the LDS Church believes the spot owned by BLM near the Sweetwater River in Natrona County is where several members of a handcart company of British converts to Mormonism died in an October 1856 snowstorm. No formal archaeological investigations have been conducted, but the site is considered a cemetery by believers, and church leaders have encouraged members since 1997 to make pilgrimages to Martin's Cove to reflect on the sacrifices made by their forebears. BLM drafted possible leases for 960 acres of Martin's Cove in September 2002 and January 2003, the latter preceded by an announcement from Sen. Craig Thomas, R-Wyo., that a lease "will keep the trail solidly in public hands and ensure public access, while still allowing the church the option to continue its good job of managing the area." But in its latest response, the church indicates a continuing frustration with BLM and decaying goodwill over cooperative management of the site along the western migration path also tread by covered wagons, Pony Express riders and California gold-seekers. "While some ascribe national significance to the Cove, the church is the only entity paying the bills, maintaining and improving the site, and assisting the visiting public," Larsen wrote. "This situation has allowed the BLM to control the Cove with little or no cost." Much of the visitation to Martin's Cove has been generated through Mormon channels, including an upsurge in organized treks of young church members replicating the handcart odyssey. BLM is proposing fees for handcart treks in a popular segment of public trail from Sixth Crossing to Rock Creek Hollow. Legislation to sell Martin's Cove to the LDS Church for an undetermined price passed the House last year but died in the Senate due to opposition by Thomas and Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo. The bill has not been resubmitted to the new Congress. csmith@sltrib.com © Copyright 2003, The Salt Lake Tribune.
