Karlas comment was Who Needs Italy. i have got Holland. Holland By Emily Perl Kingsley I am Often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability.-to try to help people who have not shared this unique experience, to understand it.to imagine how it would feel. Its Like This: When you are going to have a baby ,its like planning a fabulous vacation To Italy. You buy a bunch of guidebooks, and make your wonderful plans,The Coliseum,Michelangos David,Tha Gondolas in Venice.you may learn some handy phrases it ITalian Its All very Exciting!! After Months of eager Anticipation the Day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go.several hours later the plane lands. The flight attendant comes and says"WELCOME TO HOLLAND" HOLLAND,?you say What do you mean ,Holland?Im Suppose To Be In Italy, I signed up for Italy? All my life i have dreamed of going there! But there has been a change in Flight plans. They landed in Holland and there you must stay. The Important thing is that they havent taken you to a horrible ,disgusting, filthy place ,full of pestilence, famine and disease. Its just a different Place. So You must go out and buy new guide books . You must learn a whole new Language.and you will meet whole new group of people you would have never met Its Just A Different Place. Its slower Paced than Italy,Less flashy than Italy.but after you have been there awhile and you catch your breath, you look around and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills,Holland has Tulips, Holland even has Rembrandts. But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy and they are all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And the rest of your life you will say Yes,Thats where i was supposed to Be .thats what I planned BUT if you spend your life Mourning The fact you didnt get to Italy You may never be free to enjoy The Very Very Special.Very lovely things about Holland.. 1. [ARBOONE] A Trip in the Ozarks - 1934
    2. Jeanette Johnston
    3. My father wrote following story today. For a short time my father's parents lived about a mile outside Harrison, Arkansas, in the town of Batavia, from about Sept 1933 of June 15 of 1934. Can anyone explain what may have been going on in the area at this time? Jeanette ==================== A Trip in the Ozarks by William J. Johnston November 8, 2003 I was talking to an elderly lady about Arkansas the other day and I suddenly remembered a story that my dad told about a trip he and another man made into the Ozark highlands. The time was early spring 1934, and the roads were unpaved and unmarked. Dad had agreed to go with the fellow to a farm auction some distance away and being unfamiliar with the countryside, took a circuitous route to their destination. Dads companion wanted to buy hogs and waited all day while other items came onto the auction block. Consequently the sun was going down when the hogs came up for bid and the man bought a few. By the time the animals were loaded in the truck it was near sundown and the two men decided to find a shortcut home. They made an inquiry or two and left along an unfamiliar track. Perhaps they made a wrong turn or maybe they didnt go far enough, but long after dark they decided they were lost and would have to make additional inquiry. Soon the glimmer of coal oil lamps showed from the windows of an ancient farmhouse and Dad turned the truck away from the track and up the slope and into the farmyard. Dogs, several coonhounds, came off the front porch and barked a friendly greeting. Dad could tell they were friendly by the way their tails wagged. He stepped down from the truck, waded through the dogs, and walked toward the porch. It occurred to him that it was customary in rural areas for someone to come to the door when visitors drive into the yard. None came to this door. He stepped up onto the porch with hounds still snuffling and knocked without looking through the curtained glass windowpane. A gruff voice grumbled, Who is it? Dad answered, Lem Johnston, I think Im lost and I need to find directions to Harrison." At that, the door opened and a tall gaunt fellow stood in the lamplight and stared at Dad without saying anything. Weve been to Jack Owens auction and we took a wrong turn somewhere, Dad offered. At this the gaunt man shifted his stance a bit and Dad saw the kitchen-dining room in full detail. Scattered about the room were several men in various attitudes of repose - one or two lying on the floor, one sitting in a chair with his head cradled in his arms upon the dining table, and a couple of fellows sprawled across a bed. All of them were bloody! He also saw at least two knives. The man at the door noticed that Dad had observed a little too much and turned in the doorway so that he blocked any further view. He gave hurried instructions for finding his way to Harrison, then warned Dad to get off the porch, off the farm, and out of the county. Dad thanked the fellow, backed away from the door, and amid the friendly snuffling of coonhounds worked his way to the truck and found his way back home. The experience of that evening haunted him for weeks and he didnt feel totally safe until he moved his family back to Wyoming and away from that hostile region of the Ozarks. ======================================================================== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 1. RE: [ARBOONE] Timeline
    2. LM Fancher
    3. With regard to the Mountain Meadows Massacre, I think it is important to understand that not all of the party left from Carroll County. In Carroll County, near Beller Stand, is where many of them mustered and then left from there the early part of April. As they travelled along, they met up with other contingency groups, such as the Millers, Tacketts, and Poteets, in the area to the southern most part of Benton County near what is now the Oklahoma state line, but then was called the Indian line. Capt. Alexander Fancher, himself, was a property owner in Benton County at that time and it is unclear exactly whether he left from Carroll County/Harrison area or left from nearer his home. This question comes from the fact that Capt. Alexander had many head of cattle to take on to California. It makes no sense that he would herd them all the way to Bellers Stand then back again west. The question also arises because in many of the affidavits that came up later, those folks living near Harrison e.g the Mitchells and Bakers did not make much in the way of reference to the Fancher party at that time. Not only do the affidavits affirm the April departure date, but Capt. Alexander Fancher gave his Power of Attorney to his Uncle James Fancher of Osage to collect monies due him from the government for his service in the Tuft King (?)War from the previous September down in Marion County. The two commanding officers for that War were Col. Mitchell and Col. Denton. This POA was signed at the Carroll county courthouse in April and was later found amongst the effects of Col. James Fancher by his son, James Polk Fancher who was later a Judge in Carroll County. I'm sure this is way more than you wanted to know, but the short answer is April 1957. Sorry, I got carried away. 2. Richard Peel
    3. Hello, I am interested in information regarding Joseph Jefferson Wilkins, aka J.J. Wilkins who lived in Boone County in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He had 9 daughters of whom 7 grew to adulthood and most married there. J.J. was a Justice of the Peace for Bryon Township elected 1902. J.J. died in 1923 and is buried in Capps Cemetery. Anything anyone can tell me about that family would be appreciated. I am also looking for Eugene Martin. Eugene's full name was Franklin Eugene Martin however he only went by Eugene Martin. He was my great grandpa and I can find nothing about him after his marriage to his 3rd wife in Craighead County (Lake City) in 1902. They did live in Boone County and raised their children there. Two daughters were born there; Frances and Maggie. Frances married Will Bates, after he died she married a Mr. Sneeringer. At some point Frances lived in Omaha, Boone Co., AR and her 4 daughters went to school there. They were Hattie, Gladys, Opal Juanita and Walsie Bates, Walsie married Joel Marchant, then a Roberts. Perhaps Eugene Martin lived near her when he died. I have found nothing in the cemeteries. My aunt thought he died near Alpena. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Charlene Peel

    1. [ARBOONE] Re: Timeline
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Reta, here's some information for you Timeline. 1803 - The Louisiana Purchase occurred, bringing about 1 million acres west of the Mississippi under the ownership of the US. A portion of the Purchase became Louisiana Territory and covered what is today LA, AR, MO and probably more. 1811-1812 - New Madrid (MO) earthquake. 1812 - Louisiana Territory was divided into smaller areas. Arkansas became part of Missouri Territory at that time. 1813 - 31 December - Missouri Territory was subdivided into counties. AR was in New Madrid CO, Missouri Territory. 1815 - 15 January - New Madrid CO. was subdivided. AR was then in Lawrence Co. Missouri Territory. 1819 - July 4 - Missouri Territory was subdivided. Arkansas Territory was created then and encompassed Lawrence Co. 1823 - 1 November - Carroll CO. was created from Lawrence CO. Arkansas Territory. 1825 - 2 October - Lawrence Co. AR Territory was subdivided. Izard CO. AR Territory was created. 1835 - 3 November - Searcy CO. was created from Izard Co. AR Territory. 1836 - 15 June - Arkansas Territory granted Statehood. 1836 - 29 September - Name of Searcy CO. AR changed to Marion Co. AR. 1838 -13 December - Searcy Co. AR recreated out of lower half of Marion Co. AR. 1838 - December - Being Trail of Tears passed thru Marion CO. AR, meeting up with a trail coming down from MO, passed thru/near Carrolton, Carroll CO. AR. and arrived in Indian Territory (OK) January 1839. 1857 - September - Mountain Meadow Massacre in Utah Territory. 1861 - 1 June - AR State Legislature adopted (by a one-vote majority) the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, thus seceding from the United States of America. 1861-1865 - Marion Co. courthouse burned at least twice. 1869 - 9 April - Boone Co AR created from the western portion of Carroll Co AR. 1887 - August - Marion Co courthouse burned to the ground, reducing all county records to ashes. The only thing I know about the Mincy Meteor is that is was FOUND in Taney Co MO in 1857. Have no idea when it actually fell to earth. A courthouse could not have burned in Harrison during the Civil War. The courthouse would have been at the county seat of Carroll Co, which I believe was, at that time, Carrollton. I'm pretty sure that Harrison wasn't in existence during the Civil War anyway. The "important town" in eastern Carroll Co seems to have been Bellefonte. [Dubuque and Lead Hill were located in Marion Co at that time.] HGSMCA has an interesting little book called "Marion County - The Divided. 1861-1865" which discusses events in an around Dubuque and includes the description Roger Logan wrote for the "History of Boone Co AR. Turnbo indicates Dubuque began being built ca 1840. On 12 May 1854 the Worth PO was moved to Dubuque. A Marion Co sheriff was shot and killed on the road between Dubuque and Lead Hill. This little book is only $5 + $1 shipping. Another little book the Society has is "Tutt - King - and Everett War" - also $5 + $1. It tells the story of this infamous feud - the only time the State Militia was called to the aid of a county in AR - which ended in 1849. There's much history for Marion, Boone, and Carroll Cos on their web pages as well as on the Mountain Meadow Massacre web page. And Roger Logan is very thorough in his discussion of Boone Co history in "History of Boone Co AR." Don Ott and others have much data on the Benge Trail of Tears on the Internet. Hope this is all helpful. 1. [ARBOONE] OLD ASKEW PHOTOS
    2. Dear List, While at a flea market in Bowie, TX, I came across some wonderful old photographs of an ASKEW family.  Some of these photos were taken by E. R. Speer, Photographer, Harrison, AR  (Boone Co.).  Others have the name "Shattuck" embossed on the lower left corner of the photo. The pictures have identifying information written on the back of them, with various dates, etc.   They are all postcard size, and if fact, have been made into post cards.  They are in  good condition.  Names included are: (1) Enos ASKEW & family:  Uncle Enos, Bert, Myrtle, Gertie, Emory & Mary.  There is also the name of Bill Barnett, with a marriage date of April 1, 1934. (2)  Kent ASKEW, s/o Bert Askew & Myrtle Cooper Askew.  This is a toddler-age child, sitting on a chair.  He is wearing a long white christening-type gown. (3)  Bert & Mertle:  this appears to be a wedding picture. (4)  Buddy "Enos" ASKEW, portrait of this older man. If this is your family and you are interested in these pictures, please contact me privately.  The man I got these from told me he had some letters and other things from this family.  I got his telephone number, just in case somebody wanted to contact him.  I try to pick up old pictures when they are identified by a place and a name.  It is a wonderful way to attempt to save old photos, journals, etc.   Thank you,  Judy in TX
