    1. Re: [ARBOONE] Bates
    2. William G. Bates
    3. There are several different family lines of BATES' in the Missouri/Arkansas area. Most of the one I know about are either through William BATES who led the wagon train from Cherokee Co, Ga about 1853 or one of my family lines out of York County, SC. The line that was in Sebastian County is John BATES Sr' second son, Zachariah BATES who went to Madison County, Tennessee before moving to Arkansas about 1850. The William J. BATES who settled in Boone Co (it was part of Carroll Co at the time-1876) was Zach's youngest son and, as I iterated previously, we have no idea why he left Sebastian Co which makes it part of our research efforts. Most of our problems is not able to do onsite research which, as most researchers know, is essential to finding the most relevant information and, many times, wall-busting information. Also, in a lot of places like Boone Co, much of the records are actually in the county of origin, in this case Carroll, from before this count was formed. I have an old file I created some years ago when tracing the seven different BATES family lines I fount to be out of South Carolina between 1805 to 1850 mostly into Georgia and Alabama. This file did not have my particular family line because we could not locate the South Carolina connection until about a year ago although I had many conversations with one of the researchers without establishing the link for quite some time. I just checked that file and do not find the names you mentioned however, I do not have a lot of later (after 1860) information as that was the primary era I was looking in (1830-60) for my connection and did not keep them up after deciding I was not going to connect to any of them. I also try my best when contacting other BATES researchers to see if I can link them with one of the lines I have done a little research on and to date, only have one who I have not been able to positively identify a connection. However, all of the ones I have helped were ! connected to John Isaac BATES "The Immigrant" which allowed me to point them to Witt BATES, researcher of BFOOV (Bates Family of old Virginia) who I have had many dealings with over my years of research. I sometimes wish I had the resources to pursue a "One Name Study" on all the BATES lines in North America but that is well beyond my scope, both financially (both travel and computer capabilities) and timewise. I would probably take an organization like the LDS to be able to implement to be able to produce searches of every county/province archives and even for them my four primary families (BATES, REYNOLDS, ALLEN, PRICE) would still be a HUGH undertaking, even for them. Oh well. Life goes on whether or not we want it to. 3. I, too, am also for everything being "open and above board" as the saying goes. However, there also has to be respect for the person offering the assistance's preferences as well. If you really want to see an extremely active, open, and multiple responsive list, subscribe to the Lancashire (Lancaster Shire [County]) England list. I have seen as much as a hundred posts in one day and there was at least three or four replies to any individual post offering not only advice but the actual transcripts of even pay per use databases. I will leave it up to the person offering assistance as I am sure he should have his say in this as well. 2. I have been researching since 1998, and consisder my self an advanced genologist. Beginners here are some helpful hints , if you do know already about this , just ignore. sites I recommend: !) Volunteers can be found at Random Acts of Geneological Kindness . Go to this site and find a volunteer in your state then county. It is on the honor system and you will be expected to pay for postage, and photocopies. Some will go to cemetaries and take pictures of gravestones, in courthouse will search for deeds, wills and Marriage licenses. 2) Find a Grave site. 3) Footnotes on Ancestry.com this site will find most anything you need. this is a pay site. you will find Rev soldiers records and Confederacy soldiers.. 4)Recommend you join Ancestry.com there you can find census records and other helpful information.however some is inaccurate so dig deep and cross reference. 5) If you live in Texas, Houston has a wonderful lib. Clayton Lib for geneological research. The surnames in Boone county that I am researching. Murphy Penn Martin Smith Doss (Sarah Smith Doss applied for land late 1890 in Boone County) Freeman in Carroll County. ( 1860 census shows a William Freeman age 6 in household of Elizabeth Smith . I find son of Sarah Smith Doss in 1900 census Boone county Elizabeth( maiden name unknown) Freeman Smith was widow of unknown Freeman and had married Jordan Smith sometime between 1850 and 1860) Elizabeth Smith is shown in household of John Martin 1900 as stepmother in law. Sorry I stirred up such a hornets nest with my post. Mr Bates had posted his information ,and It just popped into my head "wonder if he looked at the cem listings in Boone and Carroll County". 3. I agree with you wholeheartedly!. If, in fact, the entire history of a particular family is to be kept a deep, dark secret, then why ask for assistance from a free and open list such as ARBOONE-L? As a researcher for every single family in one particular Arkansas county, I can tell you it's hateful to have someone ask for help and then insist that whatever assistance might be forthcoming be hidden from all other researchers. 3. My understanding of the Estes family is that it originated in England with a Nicholas Eastes b around 1522. I don't have my books out so don't quote me. Sometime around 1636/38 the story goes that there were 4 Estes brothers who left England for the "New World". 3 of the brothers stayed in the New England area and became rather successful in their own right. One brother is credited for being the progenitor of the "Southern Branch". Off hand I can't tell you the original source of this story or the brothers names. What I can tell you is that I descend from the southern branch. I have been able to paper trail trace my blood line to a Moses Estes who was the father of Gallant, Bethelehem and Nathanial. I descend from Gallant who was said to have been born around 1780 in Virginia. Moses is proving to be difficult to pin down I have that he was b around 1752 possibly in Va. or N.C. There are apparently 2 Moses Estes. No one as yet has been able to tell me if the 2 Moses are possibly one in the same or two different branches. Either way to prove we are of the origins that trace back to Nicholas Eastes my father took a DNA test and we are 100% related. Now trying to find the elusive Moses and his origins is our brick wall and we hope to one day be able to solve his mystery and finally connect to the other family members of whom we are genetically proven to be kin to. Sorry I have to cut this short, I have my mom on the phone. Chat soon hope this helps. My records show Jeff was born in 1862 and died in 1936, his wife Alice was born 12-31-1869 and died in 1947. According to records they are buried in Grubbs Springs Cemetery in Boone Co., but I have a photo of their headstone and they are in Denning cemetery. 2. Thanks Sandi, Looks like your family left a little earlier than mine did. Did anyone else's family leave Lead Hill/Independence, Kansas around March/April 1952 and arrive in Oregon City, Oregon in September of 1952? Would love to hear from you. In 1952 a wagon train (ox carts is more like it) left the Lead Hill area and went to Oregon, arriving in Oregon City in September of 1952. William DeShields and his wife Martha Elizabeth McBride DeShields were on that train. They left 2 children in Lead Hill. Amanda Jane DeShields Hughey (married about that time) and William Maxwell DeShields who became the first postmaster of Green Forest (I think this is right) the rest of the kids went with them. I know William and his brother, Handy DeShields came to Fayetteville, Arkansas the fall before they left for oregon and filed a claim for their property. Fayetteville was abuz with the people from Prairie Grove planning on going on their trip to California. So, do you know what train they went on and when they arrived in Oregon?
