    3. Thanks, Stacey. I'll share this with her tonight. s -----Original Message----- From: Stacey Davis [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, April 20, 2005 7:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Belleview School & Hico School Sue, I did some research on the school you were looking for yesterday before your post. If Belleview was the one you are looking for, it is the one at Lone Elm. I started with the 1903 Atlas of Benton County on cd-rom (which is great, by the way!) One of the great things about the atlas is that it marks the school locations with their district numbers. I then compared these maps to modern maps off of MapQuest, and consulted "Benton County Schools That Were" by Billie Jines. I went out and explored this area also, as I was in the neighborhood. Belleview School (No. 78) was also known as Quaker School. A community of Quakers was at Lone Elm; they ministered to the Indians in the Indian Territory. They erected a meeting house and established a cemetery. Of course Lone Elm cemetery is still there, on Airport Rd. near the junction with Bill Young Rd. (County Rd. 6). According to Billie Jines, during the construction of the school, school was held at Lone Elm Church. I can tell by the old map that Belleview School was on the same road as Lone Elm Cemetery (Airport Rd. today). Whereas the cemetery is on the east side of the road, the school would have been down the road (south) on the west side. Now this is all the Lone Elm area, and is east of Hwy. 59. You had said you were wondering about a school west of Hwy. 59, in this vicinity. The 1903 map shows school No. 77 in this area, west of the KCS Railroad tracks, which are not far west of present day Hwy. 59. This school was Hico School. It would have been on present-day N. This Pruitt family came from OK to AR about the time the photo was taken, but I don't know which state the school was in. Mother Gladys Pruitt married my father Oscar Kelly in Benton County ten years later (1932) and I was born a year later in Madison County. Does anyone know if this school is in Benton County? 3. Thanks to all who responded to my query on the school. Since "Genie" was so nice to post the schools she found, in my nightly 1-hour+ call to that side of the state, my sister and I discussed the list. When I mentioned Belview School (Gallatin) she said that was it! Martin School was located on todays Fairmont Rd on the property with Martin Cemetery. The building existed until about 10-20 years ago. When I went on thru schools in that area, she had heard of Black Jack school but didn't rememer where it was. The Falling Spring School she remembers as being in the area north of Cherokee City and west of Decauter (I think there is now a Falling Springs Road up in that area.) Jaybird School was located between Hwy 16 and Hwy 59 and south of 412. There is a cheese company east of 59 (at the access ramp for getting on 412 E, the road Y's, go to the righ; let puts you on 412). The school was between the cheese co. and Hwy 16. She remembers reading something and thinks Siloam Springs Academy was what is now JBU. Wet Prairie School was out in the area of Hwy 43 before you get to OK, close to Austin. These are rememberences, so please don't hold these as absolutes! So please don't fame me if any are incorrect. She remembers these from when she was a little girl and left the area for 30+ years before moving back. Thanks again to everyone who helped with this. Sue

Hi, Sue, I am not affiliated with GenWeb - the American Local History Network is a separate project. However, I do know that most counties on GenWeb have "Archives" pages now, and this is where you will find many submitted files. The Benton County GenWeb Archives is here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ar/benton/bentonco.html Here is where most files are text files. The co-ordinator is listed as Bettie Wood, and she has an email link on that page. She would be who to contact about submitting your cemetery info. You mentioned Oak Hill Cemetery in Siloam Springs. I looked at the Benton County GenWeb page and saw they do have a broken link. I found the correct one. Here is the link for the official site from the City of Siloam Springs website: http://siloamsprings.com/departments/community_development/cemetery/ Hope this helps! 2. This excellent series of books is called "Benton County Schools That Were" by Billie Jines. There are five volumes, privately published out of Pea Ridge, beginning, I believe, in 1989. I know the Springdale Public Library has these; I'm sure other libraries should as well. The Benton County Historical Society in Bentonville has copies of Billie's books. Billie Jines is a treasure that we all miss. Glenn Jones, Director Lowell Historical Museum
