    3. If I am correct, Slaughter Mountain is on highway 45 going east of Fayetteville toward Goshen. It is a winding hill that finally levels off in the valley that heads into the Goshen area.. Slaughter Mountain would be in Washington county. Gail Joseph N. Beasley wrote: >While going through some old pictures I came across pictures of men posed in front of a rather rustic house. I was told that he had passed away the last time we had gone through Bentonville a couple of years ago. So were there newspapers during that time? Thanks for any help you can give me. 3. Mr. Jefferies does not know what he is talking about if he says that there were no newspapers in Benton Co. in 1894. The Benton County Democrat, Bentonville Sun, and Gravett News were all publishing at that time. I search of obits from those papers failed to turn up either Stephen or Lucinda Ashby, however, nor were probate or marriage abstracts helpful. It is possible that the obits were published somewhere one or both of them had previously lived. The census page you cite gives Tennessee as Lucinda's birthplace; you might try looking there. 3. Hi, Peggy, A Mr. Jeffries - I wonder if that might have been Raymond Jeffries; he was active in our county history & genealogy. Yes, there were several newspapers in Benton County at that time. It's important to keep in mind that we only have "scattered issues" preserved on microfilm today - we just don't have every newspaper issue ever printed in Benton County anymore. However, it's quite possible your ancestors' obit can be located. Here are two pages at Benton County ALHN you might find of use: Historic Newspapers of Benton County http://www.geocities.com/ozarkgarden/benton/newsbenton.html Guide to Benton County Death Records & Obits. http://www.geocities.com/ozarkgarden/benton/obit.html I can check the Benton County obituary books for you, unless someone already has. Also, sometimes Benton County residents had obits published in Washington Co. newspapers; Washington Co. has obituary books, too. 3. We have an obit from a newspaper of my husband's great grandmother and 4th husband, Lucinda and Stephen E. Ashby, that evidently died the same time, she was 81 (16 August 1813) and he was 88 (1806), which would be in 1894. We figured from the reading of the obit that they died on December 31, 1894. It said on the 31st ult., as the bells rang out the old year their spirits took their flight, and as the heavenly bells rang in the new their souls were born into life immortal in the home of the blest where death can never come. It also said that they met and married in Benton County, AR. We then hired a Mr. Jeffries, a reseacher (now deceased) years ago in Benton County, AR and he could never find a married record, death record, or anything on this couple. He stated that the were no newspapers in Benton County, AR at that time but there had to be somewhere in Benton County or there wouldn't be this obit from the newspaper. Also, does anyone know where I could write, e-mail, or call for a Christian Church for information? In the 1880 census, Osage Township, Benton Co, AR Lucinda was living with her 3rd husband, Aham Cupp and two of her grandchildren. Lucinda and 3rd husband, Aham Cupp, sold his land in Jasper County, MO and bought land in 1879 at the NE4/NE4 Section 15-T28-R30, today this land is the Centerton Fish Hatchery. Her 3rd husband died in March 1881 and is buried in the Barron Cemetery near Vaughn. By 1885, she received $250.00 from the sale of her 3rd husband's land and she was married to S. E. Ashby. I wonder if Mr. Ashby was a neighbor of Aham Cupp? We would appreciate any help in finding any information on Stephen E. Ashby/Lucinda Ashby. Or any suggestions where to look for this couple? Thanking you in advance. Jack and Peggy Lewis in Enid, OK
