Dear List, I have a Confederate Soldier Ancestor. He lived in Benton and Searcy Co.s in Arkansas. He served in both Missouri and Arkansas units on the Confederate side. Family ledgend says he died in Florida and is buried in KEY WEST, FLORIDA. I have written to Monroe county Historical Society and have looked on the US Gen Web sites etc. and can not find his grave location there. Can anyone give me more ideas of how to locate his grave? His name is James Muire and was married to Mary Ellen Hand on 3 Aug. 1884 in Baxter Co., Arkansas. He died before Octpber of 1893 when his widow remarried. They had a son named James Clyde Muire born in Arkansas, October 5th 1886. Their son James Clyde Muire died on 5th of May1905 and is buried in Oakes Cemetery in BENTONVILLE. ARKANSAS. Any suggestions are welcome. Taunji Waterman Gresham, Oregon

>From "Biographical & Historical Memoirs of Northwest Arkansas" by Goodspeed Publishing, page 1111 is the following: "George N. Powell, M. D., is a prominent physician of Madison County, Ark., and resides at Drake's Creek. He was born in the county October 24, 1858, and is the third of five children, and received a liberal education in the home schools. In 1879 he began the study of medicine under Dr. J. C. Keeney, of Hindsville, Ark., and from the fall of 1881 until the spring of 1882 he attended the medical college at Ann Arbor, Mich. In the spring of 1883 he graduated from the Missouri Medical College at St. Louis, Mo., and since that time has practiced with the best of success at his present location. In 1885-86 and part of 1887 he was engaged in the mercantile business at Drake s Creek, the firm being named Powell & Counts. In 1887 they closed out their stock, and the Doctor turned his attention to his rapidly increasing practice. Before attending college he taught school for some time, and in that way earned the money to pay for his medical education. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and supports the principles of the Republican party. March 2, 1884, he was married to Amanda Nail, the daughter of F. T. Nail, and they have an interesting family of two children: Stella and Clara. Their son, Guy, died when he was two years of age. The Doctor's parents, James and Lucy J. (Reeves) Powell, were born in Cannon Co. Tenn., in 1832 and 1829, respectively, and were there married. They located on the farm in Madison Co. Ark., in 1850. In 1862 the father enlisted in the Union army, Company B, First Arkansas Infantry, and was a faithful soldier until the close of the war. He was taken prisoner once, but was soon released, and is now a member of the G.A. R. He is a Republican in his political views. The following are his children: William H., a farmer of Madison County, Ark., Jerry T., resides on Drake's Creek, and a late candidate on the Republican ticket for county assessor; George N., Nancy E., and Johannah, wife of J. W. Davis, of Oregon. Hi Brandy, I noticed you mentioned Walters in your list of surnames. I have been tracing my husband's family (Walters) who were from the Benton County, AR area. My husband's grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Walters son of David Walters and Sarah Ann Marshall. I have found information back to Thomas Walters of Pittsylvania. Could there be a connection to your family? I will make a note of the book you mentioned. Thanks, Caroline Walters Brandy Hoyt <strawberrywomanbuffalo@yahoo.com> wrote: Hi, I don't know where you live but I live near Muskogee and go to the Library their to do some of my Family research.
