He spent his early life in Greensboro, Cartersville and Rome, Georgia. He served in the Confederate Army. After the war he married Miss Hallie Hall of Greensboro, Georgia. They had three sons and three daughters. One son and two daughters of this marriage are still living. He married second Miss Mayme Dyer of Baxter County. They had two sons who survive.
