I researched the family of Sid Hulsey when I was working on the Hulsey book about 1988/89. After a close look at all the evidence for Hulseys in Carroll County, Arkansas, I concluded that the Sid Hulsey who turned up in Baxter County was actually Armistead Hulsey, son of Elijah and Savilla Hulsey who were in Carroll County in 1850, Pope County, Arkansas in 1860 and Van Buren County, Arkansas in 1870. Sid was apparently a nickname for Armistead and was sometimes recorded as Sidney. My relative, Cleora Robertson, who lived in Baxter County all her life, remembered this family and was acquainted with Belle Estes. This family was also associated with the Talburt family. Armistead's sister, Martha Anne Hulsey, was married to Joseph Talburt, in May 1868, probably Van Buren County. They also were in Baxter County in 1880 with children Walter E. age 10, Sydney Johnson Talburt born 1873, Georgeanne Talburt born 1875, Noah BTalburt born 1877. Cleora thought they might have lived in stone County in the early 1900s. Martha Anna, a widow, is in the 1910 Baxter County Census. I had input from Lorraine Hamilton on this family in the 1980s, Sidney Talburt was her ancestor. Armistead or Sid, b 1844, was in Baxter County in 1880 with wife Catharine born in 1846 and children Elijah born 1871 and Belle born 1873. Cleora Robertson remembered a very controversial court case where Sidney Hulsey was charged with larceny. I found this was in September 1883. Sidney said he would not get a fair trial in Baxter County, so the trial was held in Fulton County. Cleora said that many people thought he was framed for this crime. An accomplice, Thomas Euclady, was sentenced to one year in the State penitentiary. Sid was sentenced to five years and Cleora said that he died in prison. I believe the crime was stealing hogs. There were as many witnesses for Sid as there were against him and Joseph Talburt was one of those who was for him. There was also a court Suit in 1882 were Katie Hulsey (Catherine) was a witness for the plaintiff and SydneyHulsey was a witness for the defendant. Cleora Robertson said that Belle Hulsey married Bill Estes. In 1900 Baxter County Arkansas, Catherine Halsey who was born February 1848, a widow, said she was a mother of five children with one living. This must have been her daughter, DoraBelle Hulsey, in the household, was born March 1879 and said she was divorced. In 1910 Baxter County, William Estes, with wife Dora Belle born 1878 said she was a mother of two children, one of them living I imagine this must have been Fforest Estes age 4 that one living child. Kate Hulsey was also in the household listed as mother in law, she was 64. Cleora Robertson only remembered one child of Belle's, a daughter, Minnie, who married Puss Irwin and died in a car wreck. I notice that the age given for Belle Estes Ivens is Off a bit from the census information. If she was 52 in 1930 that would put her birth at 1878, which is more consistent with the daughter of Sidney and Catherine Hulsey. Cleora said that Belle begged her to see that she (Belle) was buried in the cemetery at Mountain Home. I guess she didn't get her wish. Also, I don't know if the origins of the Green family in Baxter County is known, but if they are associated with Hulseys, you might want to check in Carroll County, Arkansas, and also in Franklin County, Alabama, where Greens are associated with Hulsey, King, and Tharp and other families who came to Baxter County in the 1870s. Just a thought, I have no other evidence.
