Don Ott? I am not sure which list that you are observing; but I have a question for you concerning Marion Co. geography. I was sent a 1900 census record for some of my father's Smith families and they are living in De Sotao Township. Do you have any background on this area? 02 June 1900 Marion Co., Arkansas census, De Soto Township: MCCOY, Abraham L. head W M Dec 1866 33 md/13 yrs MO TN TN day laborer #30/30 Hannah L. wife W F Dec 1865 34 md/13 yrs 6/6 MO UNK TN Nellie J. daughter W F Dec 1898 11 single MO MO MO Thos Guy son W M Mch 1890 10 single MO MO MO at school Florida daughter W F Jan 1892 8 single MO MO MO at school Floyd son W M Jan 1892 8 single MO MO MO at school Oscar son W M April 1896 4 single MO MO MO George I. son W M Oct 1898 1 single AR MO MO LILES, Bert boarder W M March 1879 21 single IN IN IN day laborer MCNALL, William S. boarder W M March 1866 34 single IA NY NY day laborer The family migrated from Laclede Co., Missouri and at this point, do not know if they stayed there or moved on. But, I find this interesting, in the fact that my mother was a Smith and her Smiths were from around Barren Creek - early Marion Co. Can you or Peggy shed any light? Was this area near Sugar Loaf? Wasn't that zinc mining? Appreciate any impute from anyone? Bernie Moore-Knowles Phoenix, Arizona - Papa'aloa, Hawai'i "I have Indian blood in me. What is this -- this morning -- the Pepsi Challenge? Just kidding, you know. In book, "History of Marion County," don't find DeSoto in "Post Offices and Postmasters." My book is not indexed so can't readily find DeSoto. But have map, Rand McNally "Standard Map of Arkansas," with townships. DeSoto Township is on south border of MCAR with Searcy County. It borders Tomahawk and Maumee Townships in Searcy County. The Buffalo River runs through DeSoto, Maumee and Tomahawk Townships. In Marion County, Jefferson Township is just east of DeSoto Township -- then Big Creek Township is between Jefferson Township and the border of Baxter County which is Matney County. So, DeSoto Township is not too far west of the corner where Searcy, Stone, Baxter, and Marion Counties meet. Now, in the 1900 census you posted -- which one is (ones are) your SMITHs? Peggy
Peggy This is getting more interesting. I am fortunate that there are two Smith researchers of my Laclede Co., Missouri Smiths - which was my father's paternal grandmother's maiden name - that always send me updates that they find them and vise versa. Both of these women are more knowledgable in Missouri research than I and I am the Arkansas connection. Which means that I ask you all for help all the time! LOL Here is a quick line chart: My father's line: Brackin Smith (b1812 TN)> Eliza Jane Smith Moore (b1852 MO) > Arthur Samuel Moore (b1885 MO) > Lowell Arthur "L. A." Moore (b1917 AR) > me And mother's Smith line? Thomas J. Smith (b1866 MO) > Sherman Lee Smith (b1888 AR) > Lena Bernice Smith Moore (b1918 AR) > me Now, the interesting thing that has been coming forward in my father's Smith research - L. A.'s direct family appear to have migrated to the borders of Randolph CO., Arkansas circa 1900 - from the Lebanon area of Laclede Co., Missouri. Many stayed in the Lebanon area of Laclede Co., though. Just last year, we found my MOTHER's Smith family buried there in Lebanon - Joe Smith, youngest Smith sibling and brother to my grandfather; Sherman Lee Smith; which you know has the Baxter Co., Arkansas and Indian Territory roots. How Joe Smith ended up in Lebanon, is anyone's guess at this point - but, he is buried with his last wife; Beulah Morehouse Regean Smith - there at the Lebanon City Cemetery. Now, I was never told that Mother and L. A.'s two families ever were kin. As a matter of fact, I did not know that L. A.'s grandmother had even been a Smith by birth until a couple of years ago. I doubt my father even knew who his father's family was or their names - because my father's father died in 1924 - when my father was only seven years old. So, when I was sent this census record this morning for the McCoy family - wife; Hannah was a Smith by birth (Well, really - her mother gave birth to quite a few children; whose father was a Pleas Beard - married man with a family of his own. Hannah McCoy was actually a Beard by birth - but, that is a great story all in itself. When Pleas' wife died; he then married Hannah's mother; Nancy - which was a sister to my ELiza Jane Smith Moore. Confused yet?) Anyway.............I did some more research and it appears that the McCoys were in Arkansas for the zinc mine work: 02 June 1900 Marion Co., Arkansas census, De Soto Township: MCCOY, Abraham L. head W M Dec 1866 33 md/13 yrs MO TN TN day laborer #30/30 Hannah L. wife W F Dec 1865 34 md/13 yrs 6/6 MO UNK TN (Smith/Beard by birth) Nellie J. daughter W F Dec 1888 11 single MO MO MO (married Jefferies) Thos Guy son W M Mch 1890 10 single MO MO MO at school Florida daughter W F Jan 1892 8 single MO MO MO at school Floyd son W M Jan 1892 8 single MO MO MO at school Oscar son W M April 1896 4 single MO MO MO George I. son W M Oct 1898 1 single AR MO MO LILES, Bert boarder W M March 1879 21 single IN IN IN day laborer MCNALL, William S. boarder W M March 1866 34 single IA NY NY day laborer 21 April 1910 Marion Co., Arkansas census, Jefferson Township, Silver Hollow mining camp: MCCOY, Abraham L. head M W 44 md/1 22 yrs MO AL KY 44 miner, zinc mine #67/68 Hannah L. wife F W md/1 22 yrs 44 7/7 MO MO TN Nellie J. daughter F W 21 single MO MO MO teacher, public school Thomas G. son M W 20 single MO MO MO miner, zinc mine Florida daughter F W 18 single MO MO MO Floyd son M W 18 single MO MO MO miner, zinc mine Osker son M W 14 single MO MO MO George I. son M W 11 AR MO MO John E. son M W 8 AR MO MO Abraham McCoy is evidently deceased by 1920 and Hannah Smith (Beard) McCoy is living with daughter; Nellie - now married to a Jefferies Judging from the birth of the Jefferies children - I would say that Nellie was married in Laclede Co. circa 1915. But, did Abraham McCoy died in Marion Co., ARkansas or Laclede Co., Missouri? Possiblity that he knew he was dying and moved his family back to Missouri? Mining work, I bet sure shortened a man's life span. 1920 Laclede Co., Missouri census, Lebanon Township, north & west RR: JEFFERIES, Zebadee head M W 31 married MO MO MO #144/144 Nellie wife F W 31 married MO MO MO Raymond son M W 4 8/12 single MO MO MO Ralph son M W 2 3/12 single MO MO MO Virtrice daighter F W 5/12 single MO MO MO MCCOY, Hannah mother-in-law F W 54 widow MO UN MO Guy brother-in-law M W 29 single MO MO MO John brother-in-law M E 18 single AR MO MO So, I suppose I was wanting to see just how close in proximity that the two Smith clans of mine were living - maternal and paternal Smith lines - in Arkansas It sure has crossed my mind that the two lines are kin. Whether Mother and L. A. were even aware of it (if they were?), I don't know - but, with Joe Smith being buried there in Lebanon - it sure makes me wonder. Did any of that come out clearly, Peggy?
