    3. Bernie, when extracting 1900 census for your Thomas J. SMITH, it shows he "owned" his farm. I'm thinking you may be able to obtain land record -- when and how he acquired it -- and when it was granted to new owner from him or heirs. This may provide a good lead for information on him. Peggy

    3. Peggy I had discussed this with Vera sometime in the past - when I did realize that Tom Smith owned land. Roger Harvell even was able to pinpoint it for me. I have never researched or ordered land records and really, would not know how to begin. I wondered how Nannie had come about losing the land or selling it? Doubt there was a sale though, as the family was very poor. I really think that Tom Smith spent time. My grandfather was born in September 1888 and his older sister; Dollie in 1886. I have NEVER found a marriage record for Tom Smith and Nannie Sinor and it just might be that they never married at all. Who knows? Smith of Marion county, serving out in our county jail, a fine for selling liquor, was taken out by a guard to attend church last Sunday, at the close of the services succeeded in slipping away and making good his escape. Marshall Stockton followed him as far as Yellville but did not succeed in re-capturing him. Harrison Times. Mountain Echo Newspaper, April 1891: T. J. Smith of Barren Creek township, who was tried and convicted at Yellville at the last term of the circuit court and fined $200 for selling liquor without license in Marion county, in default of payment of which fine was placed in jail and afterward made his escape, stood Deputy Sheriff Brown, of Boone county, off one day last week, refusing to be arrested. Brown could not make him surrender without shooting him and his father-in-law, Jas. Sinor, both, and he did not want to do that. Smith swears he means to stay at home and will die before he will surrender to an officer. Baxter County Citizen. Note: Don't you just wonder what happened, Peggy? Son; Lewis is living in a Fields home and enumerated there as "adopted son" ?, seven year old Everett is nowhere to be found and there is a child named Marvil in both 1900 and 1910. I do not have a clue as to who he is or what happened to him. I can not read the 1910 census image very well - but do not believe that Nannie Sinor Smith was a landowner. Brooks descendants (Everett married Lucy Brooks) tell me that Everett Smith spent time, also. He died in April of 1926. Apparently his daughter; Katherine Everetta Smith was born one day and he was killed the next day. I was told that his death was a farming accident and that they were living in or near Guion. He was only 23 years of age. Wonder what his stint in the state pen was for? These Smiths are something else, you know it?
