Ran right into the WHITFIELDs who are married to LANCASTERs connected to me. Was James Worley WHITFIELD born in Indian Territory at location of present-day Lawton in Comanche County, Oklahoma? And is he descended from a FELTON female? Look forward to seeing your post on the Message Board -- which will be sent to the Baxter Mailing List. Thank you. Peggy {King} Truesdell Tulsa, Oklahoma

James Calvin SMITH, b. bet. 1851-1852, AR; age 59 in 1910 Census, Whiteville Township, Baxter County, AR, son of John SMITH and Anna HAMM, m. Catherine "Katie" HAMM, b. abt. 1855, AR. 1) Martha J. SMITH, b. abt. 1875, AR, m. J. L. SAVAGE ON 5 September 1897 in Baxter County, AR; 2) Mary L. SMITH, b. abt. 1877, AR; 3) Nancy E. SMITH, abt. 1878, AR; 4) James Leeter SMITH, b. 12 December 1879, Barren Creek Township, Baxter County, AR (1910C Barren Creek Township, Baxter County, AR, Age 30), d. 19 November 1950, Broken Arrow, Tulsa County, OK; m. 1) Hettie Ora KNIGHT, dau of Benjamin Franklin KNIGHT and Angeline Virginia BAGWELL; 2) Johnnie Irene BAGWELL; 5) Sarah Viola "Kate" SMITH, b. 22 February 1884, Sharp County, AR, d. 11 May 1963, m. 31 July 1904, Baxter County, AR to Joseph Morton ADAMS. First, let me say that I have no known kinship to this family. My interest is firsthand though, as I was born and raised in Broken Arrow, and remember when Jim SMITH died suddenly of a heart attack. Their son, Jim Roy, and late daughter Carol and I were about same age and we played together and sometimes I spent the night with Carol. My family and the BAGWELLs were friends in Arkansas and Broken Arrow. We also knew the daughters of Hettie Ora and James Leeter SMITH: Thelma LEA, Ora MAXEY and Bernice MAXEY. They communicated with my mother until she died in 1993 --now, they're all deceased. My great-great-grandfather, William Alexander RIDGWAY (1825, Weakley County, TN - 1917, Shady Grove, near Buford, Baxter County, AR, knew Angeline Virginia {BAGWELL} "Aunt Puss" KNIGHT. Hettie Ora and her mother, James Leeter and Johnnie {BAGWELL} SMITH are all buried at Park Grove Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. I've been trying to sort out this SMITH family for years -- from another major one who also lived at Buford -- and would welcome any information you have. Please reply to this Board and the message will be sent to me. Are you descended from the WHITFIELD - SMITH union? Peggy {King} Truesdell Tulsa, Oklahoma

> I am looking for a divorce record for Jonathan Cunningham and Sarah P. Whitted. The divorce occurred after his return from the Civil War. I would appreciate any information, either about this divorce or which court would have handled divorce decrees during that period. > Thanks, Jane **************** Baxter County wasn't formed until 1873. I checked Chancery Court Record book A where divorces are found. The dates covered in this book were 1874-1895 and found no Cunningham. You might check the county they were in, in the 1860 census. Dear List Members, I just ran across an interesting Website, "Courthouse Experiences" http://www.bcpl.net/~dmg/courthouse.htm Not every county is listed, but the ones listed gave helpful information regarding the attitudes of those working in the courthouses. I might suggest that if you have had a positive or negative courthouse experience you add them to this site. I now know how to prepare myself for several courthouses I want to visit later this year.
