Peggy, >From book IV of Down Memory Lane by Betty and Sue Lucille King Havner Finley mentioned: her mother had 1 sister, and 2 brothers; John and Charlie Spencer (unlce Charlie moved to TX and is buried in Port Lavaca, TX). She does mention Grandmother, Matilda Cantrell, wasn't really her grandmother. In one place it says the Cantrells came from WV and in another VA According to more in this article, the father of Lillie Mae Spencer took the 2 girls and 2 boys to live with this old couple who had no children. It seems Lillie's sister was only a couple of months, if that. The kids hardly ever saw the daddy and the called the Cantrells mom and dad. In the Burnt School House Cemetery. Bernie, when extracting 1900 census for your Thomas J. SMITH, it shows he "owned" his farm. I'm thinking you may be able to obtain land record -- when and how he acquired it -- and when it was granted to new owner from him or heirs. This may provide a good lead for information on him. Peggy
Hi, Bernie. I had just hit sign out -- but got back on so I could read your message. Yes, Mary Ann NISWANGER [email protected] sent me 32 pages. Sarah FRANKS is daughter of Nancy Lavina YOUNG (1837, Benton County, AL - 30 June 1920, Norfork, Baxter, AR) and Henry C. FRANKS (27 May 1844 - 1878, Big Flat, Baxter, AR). Nancy Lavina YOUNG's first marriage was to David Richard LEE, (1835, TN - 27 May 1865, Union - Civil War Casualty) on 13 February 1855, Savanah, Harden, TN. Some of the information does "bump" into families we know at Big Flat and other locations, particularly from some marriages of the LEE children. I'm sending another note -- because I want you to be sure to read it. Peggy
Peggy I had discussed this with Vera sometime in the past - when I did realize that Tom Smith owned land. Roger Harvell even was able to pinpoint it for me. I have never researched or ordered land records and really, would not know how to begin. I wondered how Nannie had come about losing the land or selling it? Doubt there was a sale though, as the family was very poor. I really think that Tom Smith spent time. My grandfather was born in September 1888 and his older sister; Dollie in 1886. I have NEVER found a marriage record for Tom Smith and Nannie Sinor and it just might be that they never married at all. Who knows? Vera, I learned today that Jacob Lee Ransom SPENCER was shot and killed by "Joe" FRIX in 1917. This was apparently a trespassing dispute because SPENCER was hauling wood at the time. It is believed FRIX left the country. Wonder if this is Joseph A. FRIX (b. abt. 1878) who married Mary HENLEY (b. abt. 1879) in Baxter County on 9 November 1899. Did his sister, Winnie FRIX, marry William Harvey RAYMOND (whose wife was Eliza Jane McNEILL)? Their father was also Joseph or Joe FRIX. Would you be able to find any newspaper record? There may be a probate of SPENCER will. He had children by both marriages (1) Elizabeth GEISLER; (2) Sarah FRANKS. Peggy
Vera, received information tonight from Janie SPENCER, daughter of Phoebie Jane SPENCER and John S. COX. McFALL was maiden name of Matilda (1844 - 1929), wife of William M. CANTRELL (1847 - 1937) -- both buried at Burnt School House Cemetery. The census records indicate Matilda did not have children. (You provided her obituary.) Janie said she was a midwife, and I've posted information that her nursing care saved Morrison "Maston" FINLEY's life after severly burned as a small child. In William M. CANTRELL's obituary (you provided), it says that Phoebie Jane SPENCER and Lillie "Mae" SPENCER were adopted. Janie tells me that CANTREL happened to be passing the SPENCER house and heard the children crying. Ther mother, Elizabeth {GEISLER} SPENCER, had died and the children were alone. He took Phoebie Jane and Lillie "Mae" home and they raised them (no formal adoption). Phoebie Jane was a small infant. To refresh your memory, the daughters of Jacob Lee Ransom SPENCER, "Mae" married Noah Webster KING and Phoebie Jane (d. 1983) married twice John S. COX (1887 - 1976), and his older brother, Charles Ovis "C. O." COX, who committed suicide. Janie has two half sisters from her mother's marriage to C. O. COX, so he was probably first husband. These parties left Baxter County and lived in Colorado. She said the CANTRELLs also moved to Colorado, where they homesteaded, but returned to Baxter County about 1916. She said William M. CANTRELL had store at Advance. Janie also thinks he was a "sheriff" (deputy?) even when he discovered the SPENCER babies just after their mother died. Lucille and Adolph HAVNER went there, too, as Elsie was born in Eckley, Yuma County, Colorado in 1922. I'm giving this information to assist in time frame. I have more information -- will put in new post. Peggy

Peggy I was not aware of the Hughes and Luster connections at all. So, wonderful of you to post it all. But, I have been a bit confused on the Hughes families of Baxter Co. It appears that James Hughes may have had a brother that migrated there, also? Note: See Mary Hughes in this census. What do you think? It was confusing to me because there were two John W. Hughes in Baxter Co. in the same time frame - both born circa 1871. 1880 Census Place: Crawford, Washington, Arkansas Source: FHL Film 1254058 National Archives Film T9-0058 Page 644C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Joseph HUGHES Self M M W 32 NC Occ: Farmer Fa: NC Mo: NC Eliza HUGHES Wife F M W 28 AR Occ: Keep House Fa: NC Mo: NC George C. Hughes that married my Curtis Sinor was the son of James Franklin Hughes and Vesta "Vestie" Evans; I BELIEVE it was per an obituary. It may well be that Vesta was a step-mother though? There were some Hughes family photographs that were shared with me last year. In them, was what appeared to be a marriage day photograph of a Zula Sinor and Jim Hughes. I naturally thought that Curtis Sinor's sister; Zula must have married a brother to John Hughes and his name was Jim Hughes. But, was Jim Hughes a cousin or a brother? What do you make of it? Peggy I have always been curious about the Wheats - because of the Melvina Smith intermarriage. Melvina Smith - in her mother's household - was living next to who I believe to be my Tom Smith in the 1880 Barren Creek census. Oddly enough, what I have learned about the Wheats was through a Cockrum researcher. As you know, my great uncle; Bill Smith was married to May Cockrum. So, the Smith surname is coming up in both lines - just don't know if they are my Smiths or not. This is what I have come up with on the Wheats. Unfortunately, the Wheat researcher did not know what happened to John Sherman Wheat and Melvina Smith. You provided me with the 1910 census and I did not have that.............so, appreciate it.
