Arkansas Gazette, November 21, 1872: A correspondent write as follows from Fountain Hill, under the date of the 15th. Each day bring about some new cause for excitement. The depths of radical corruption seems to be unfathomable. C. W. Gibbs, the president of the board of registrars, reports that he was attacked by the ku klux klan a few nights ago and fired at six times at ten paces. Strange to say, he was untouched, and although he says he fled in his nightclothes, he made his appearance early next day with walking cane and other rigging. As was to be expected he set up a howl for martial law. But the story is too absurd. No one, not even his own party, believes a word of it. On the night of the 18th inst. the two Butlers and Zeb Ivey confined in jail for the murder of Weaver, made their escape, and that, too, from a new ten thousand dollar jail and a paid guard. The aforesaid guard must have been awake or asleep or absent on leave, as the prisoners made their escape, not through any defective window, or scratching under the walls, but walked out the door. The sheriff, guard, jailor and prisoners are all radicals of the most approved pattern. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
