    1. [ARASHLEY] Murder of John Cook Downery

    3. I'm working on a story about Mary Robinson Withers Bond, who organized the First Methodist Church of Hamburg in 1850. He was a sister to a Captain Robert J. Withers, steamboat captain, who killed his brother-in-law, John Cook Downey on August 8, 1860. Can anyone tell me anything about the murder. I would like to know why he killed him, where, and how. Also, why didn't Capt. Withers go to jail? Mary Robinson Withers Bond moved to old Dallas, Arkansas in Polk County, and lived with the grandson, J.Y. Christmas, which she had raised. Rev. Christmas organized the First Methodist Church South in the new town of Mena, Arkansas in 1896. Thanks for any help. SAM Shirley Ann (Shewmake) Manning, editor The Mountain Signal P.O.
