    2. My G-grandfather was Thomas Stanley who came from Alabama to Asheley County, Arkansas - Wilmot,Arkansas. He married Mary Frances Grant. He was in the Civil war and was in the Rock Island Union Prison. I do not know anything about his family. I do know that he was with the Dean Family in Parkdale, Arkansas in 1850 Federal Census. Did your Stanleys come from Alabama by any chance. Sandra Fuller Fisher

    3. Hi Sandra: As far as I know, my Stanleys were not in Alabama, and I don't know of a Grant family connection. They were in Surrey County, North Carolina in the mid- to late-1700's. They moved to an area near the Kentucky/Tennessee state line, where they lived until about 1781, when the family was attacked by Indians. Some were killed, and the others were taken captive. My gggggrandfather, John Standley, was forced to remain with the Indians as a cook for an extended period of time, after his mother and sisters were exchanged for Indian prisoners. Eventually, the surviving family made their way back to North Carolina where they remained until about 1818. My gggggrandfather then moved the family to an area northeast of Knoxville. In 1843, his son, Joseph Stanley, moved his family to Edgar County, Illinois, and then to northern Missouri in 1856 (so they were still in Illinois at the time of the 1850 census). Most of the family remained there until several family members came to Oregon. Some of them, including my great great grandfather, John Lee Stanley, served in the Civil War, but in the Union Army. David Truman Stanley, John Lee Stanley's eldest child, moved around more than his siblings. He did come to Oregon, but he was briefly in Arkansas, as best I have been able to determine. I need to locate an index for the 1860 census to find out where. I know that he returned to Arkansas, to Fordyce (Dallas County) by 1910, where I believe he was living when he died in July 1917. Some of the family who remained in Tennessee and Missouri might have made their way to Alabama, but I have not yet found any indication of that.
