Hello My name is Dolores Gail Cothran, I live in Florida I go back in time to a Hezikiah Cockrum from Greenville Dist. SC. He had a son he named William Cockrum who married Mary Polly Spillers in or near Greenville Dist. SC. They in turn had 11 children. Now this was all handed down to me in a bible. This bible belonged to George Washington Lafayette Cockrum a son of William and Polly. George had an older brother named Edward A. Cockrum who married Mary Ann White in Calhoun Co. AL they too are listed in this bible. Edward A. Cockrum used the surname at times of Cothrun and Cothran. He lived in Fulton Co. GA for a time. He then moved to Gadsden AL in Etowah Co. There he worked with his Niece's husband the owner and operator of that newspaper called the "Gadsden Times" >From Excerpts of this old paper I found this: 17 Dec. 1875 E. A. Cothrun, of this office, left Monday for Hamburg, Arkansas, on a visit to his children. He will return by the first of January and again enter upon his duties with the beginning of the Centennial year.........p.623 from the abstract book of this paper This is my Grand Uncle Edward A. Cothrun he was also called Judge. He was the Uncle of Charles Edgar Meeks the son of the owner of the paper. How this works is like this: George my Great Grandfather and E.A. Cothrun had another Brother named Hezikiah Allen Cockrum the eldest son of William and Polly............... Hezikiah Allen married Miss Mathela Crouch in Ceder Bluff AL a part of Cherokee Co. AL and to them were born several children I show either 5 or 6 not looking but I have them on the 1860 census of that place. Anyway one child a girl was named Mary Jane Cothran b. 1845 AL. She grew up and married William Marion Meeks and they were the Org. Meeks owners of the paper at one time. They were who E. A. Cothrun went to work for.................I know this because I found a article via the Library in Etowah Co. AL in Gadsden. The article was telling how Charlie Meeks had spent 54 years of his life connected to that paper between his Father running it and then him taking over as he came of age.................... Charlie then married Annie Lou Baugh of that place and they had some children a son and a daughter Charles Edgar Meeks Jr. and Eunice.................Eunice grew up and married Perry T. Dean.......this is important as they later when Charlie retired from the paper sometime just prior to May of 1964 and they all moved as a huge family unit to Miami, FL. In that article however Charlie named "his uncle Judge Cothran" it also named his Mother and listed her as Miss Mary Jane Cothran prior to marriage. NOW...................what I would love to learn by joining your list is this: Who were the children that Edward (E. A. better known as Judge) Cothran go to visit in HAMBURG in 1875? Could some kind sole living in that area help me out with this perhaps? I need a lookup in that area on both the 1870 and 1880 if it exists at all if not tax list would work for any people by that name or any variant. My problem is my Genealogy Library does not lend or borrow. I am not near by an LDS Library..............I live in a rural community we now have an LDS church but it is tiny and just beginning to take foot so it does not have a Library yet..................Next problem My Genealogy Library does not cross the Mason Dixon Line.........................I sure wish that it did. HELP......................................... Also if any one on this list connects into this please e-mail me right away as I have a ton of goodies to share with you. I go back 2 gen. past my Hezikiah...............his father was Daniel Cockrum of Halifax Co. VA who left his will there. He was listed as the only heir of his own Father Daniel Cockerham Sr. of Caroline Co. VA...................................I have a lot of wills and a bible record and censuses to boot. Thanks and it sure is nice to be here! Gail
