    1. Re: [ARASHLEY] Anyone doing Cothran or any varriant?
    2. Gail Moore
    3. Is anyone in this neck of the woods doing Cothran or have any of you seen my bunch. I am working in the dark here as I can't place them before this area for a period of about 20 years or better. I have the Parents and their marriage, and I have the Father back to his birth. Then I have him later in life and up through his death. So I am missing the "Children's given names" I am wanting to find someone in the area who could check the index of the 1870 census for this County, and make a list of all persons by this surname All that I know right now is this, he had children living in this area around the town of Hamburg in 1875 as he left Gadsden AL and came into Hamburg to spend the Christmas Holiday's with them and did not return to his home and job until after New Years, this I got out of a local Newspaper in Gadsden AL where he worked with his Brothers' daughter and her husband the Meeks. The Parents of the children I seek were Edward A. Cothran nicknamed "The Judge" and Mary Ann White dau. of Blumer White. I do know that he lived in or near Atlanta at one time according to the Newspaper in Gadsden AL but now I don't know if that article meant Ga or some other place. I lost track of them after he and Mary Ann married in Old Benton Co. now Calhoun Co., AL in 1859 in Sept. that year. They did not show up there in the 1860 nor did I find them anywhere in the State on the index. I now must wonder if perhaps they did not follow the White's and perhaps out to AR. My Library only has one of the IGI's so I have not been able to find them that way either. Any and All Help welcomed!! Thanks, Gail

    1. [ARASHLEY] census between 1910 1nd 1920
    2. Glenda Romine
    3. Hello, Does anyone on this list know if a county census was taken in any year between 1910 and 1920? I need to know the exact years that Henry Burke and his family lived near Montrose. Is there any other way to find out? They were in OK in 1910 and in Poinsett Co. AR in 1920. Henry Burke was my grandpa and his wife Odie was a Streeter who is related to the Streeters in Ashley Co. 1. [ARASHLEY] Burke at Thebes between 1910 and 1920.
    2. Glenda Romine
    3. Hello, My name is Glenda Burke Romine. I have a copy of Rebecca DeArmond -Huskey's book, Beyond Bartholomew. On page 118 she states that a Henry Burke operated a black lodge hall and a black cafe at Thebes. It was first run by Melvin Brown. Mentioned in the same paragraph is the McComb Store. My grandpa was a Henry Burke. He and his family lived near Montrose sometime between 1910 and 1920. Does anyone have anymore information about this black lodge hall and cafe. Might be information on the tax lists for that time period but I do not have access to them and cannot come to Hamburg on a business day to check at the library or court house. If anyone knows about this or how to find out please e-mail me. I am also related to the Streeters and possibly the Sawyers in Ashley co. Like to hear from you too. Glenda Romine gromine@bscn.com

    1. [ARASHLEY] Hicks Marriages
    2. This is a copy of some information that I located at: http://members.aol.com/hickspage/gamarriages.html and it has some very valuable information that ties in with Bradley County. For example, Martha Moss Hicks married Thomas B. St. John in Troup County and this information is listed there. Also, I know there were far more than one Hicks that came out into Bradley County and surrounding areas, so I thought I would help provide this list for those that may need it. 1. [ARASHLEY] 1850 Information of Bradley Countian Families of NC then Georgia
    2. Forwarded message, the Hills settled in the southeast portion of Arkansas: Hey, I put together a database containing over 5,000 plus names in Excel of North Carolina born persons living in Georgia. Now the information was obtained from several locations posting text files, and have been assembled to act as one database. For Instance: How I came about doing this is by way of my husband's family, who like many from Bradley County is from Troup County, Georgia. Anyway, I have followed the migratory as most all of you have down the coast of the East Coast then after the Civil War the Migration to the West Arkansas (Which is funny how it incompasses several states!!! and is used as a "Term") anyway, all of this is a preclude of just some of the information that I have found. For an example I am including a family line that I've been researching and that is the "Hills". Now I know that the "Hills" settled in the SE portion of Arkansas, including those of Bradley, Ashley and Drew Counties. Well anyway, there are alot.... And I do mean alot of Robert Hill's. Seem's like every family member that decides to have children, named one of their children Robert Hill, whether it be a boy..... or a girl (example: Robert Penolia Hill married David Samuel Stedman / Steadman and she is the daughter of Robert Hill and Nancy Carruth Hill.) Anyway, I found this while researching: NAME AGE SEX OCCUPATION HOUSEHOLD # COUNTY YEAR BORN POSSIBLE? Hill, Green 45 M Farmer 65 Troup 1805 Hill, Frances 40 F Adult 65 Troup 1810 Hill, William 20 M Adult 65 Troup 1830 Hill, Elizabeth 18 F Adult 65 Troup 1832 Hill, Julia, A. 16 F Young Adult 65 Troup 1834 There may be a connection,,,,,, but maybe not..... But I thought it was worth my consideration since Green is a also a popular first of second name term used within the Stedman / Steadman family. By the way, the database is not for publication, just personal use until I hear otherwise.

    1. [ARASHLEY] MASSEY / FRANKLIN families???
    2. Amy Rupp
    3. Thanks to a beautiful transcription of Unity Cemetery done by Wayne Adcock, and available at: http://www.texark.org/ashley/unity_cem.html, I found my cousin Edgar MASSEY and wife Effie Lora FRANKLIN MASSEY buried there. Their last residence on the SSDI was in Bastrop, Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, but Essie's FRANKLIN family has several members buried there. (The MASSEYS were born in Pope County, Arkansas, to William MASSEY and Zora WAGES MALONE MASSEY, and two of their wives were as well: Bertha and Dolly WILLIAMSON.) Unfortunately I have been unable to find out if Edgar and Essie had any children. Edgar's brothers Samuel Leroy MASSEY m. Bertha WILLIAMSON with known children Sybil, Hilliard, Odell, and Agnes I presume moved to Oklahoma. However, Edgar's brother William Jackson MASSEY married Bertha's sister Dollie WILLIAMSON and lived in the Ashley County - Morehouse Parish area. They had the following children: Edgar Harmon R. T. Christell John Mitchell Franklin D. I believe Franklin D. may have married a Zelma. Christell died 15 Nov 1997, last residence Bastrop, Morehouse Parish; R. T. (Robert Thomas?) was born 27 Jan 1921 and died 10 Aug 1966 also in Bastro; he served in WWII. If at all possible I would LOVE an obituary lookup on Christell, who was the most recent to die -- 15 Nov 1997 (male). I am desperately searching for the mother of Samuel, William and Edgar (they also had sisters Liza and Malissa). Thank you! Amy Rupp

    2. Jann Woodard
    3. Arkansas Gazette, November 21, 1872: A correspondent write as follows from Fountain Hill, under the date of the 15th. Each day bring about some new cause for excitement. The depths of radical corruption seems to be unfathomable. C. W. Gibbs, the president of the board of registrars, reports that he was attacked by the ku klux klan a few nights ago and fired at six times at ten paces. Strange to say, he was untouched, and although he says he fled in his nightclothes, he made his appearance early next day with walking cane and other rigging. As was to be expected he set up a howl for martial law. But the story is too absurd. No one, not even his own party, believes a word of it. On the night of the 18th inst. the two Butlers and Zeb Ivey confined in jail for the murder of Weaver, made their escape, and that, too, from a new ten thousand dollar jail and a paid guard. The aforesaid guard must have been awake or asleep or absent on leave, as the prisoners made their escape, not through any defective window, or scratching under the walls, but walked out the door. The sheriff, guard, jailor and prisoners are all radicals of the most approved pattern. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

Then too, some of the oldest records of that area of the county are not to be found in Ashley Co, but in Chicot, and Morehouse Parish, LA - both of these are certainly close enough to justify a brief search of tombstone records and perhaps census info (since you are not quite sure as to the exact year of her death) just to be sure. My wife, Robin, has heard of Miller's Chapel, but is not sure just where or what it is (old town, church, or cemetery only). Her father, the most knowledgeable member of the family concerning that area, is out of pocket currently, but we will ask him when he returns.
