    3. Hi Sandra: As far as I know, my Stanleys were not in Alabama, and I don't know of a Grant family connection. They were in Surrey County, North Carolina in the mid- to late-1700's. They moved to an area near the Kentucky/Tennessee state line, where they lived until about 1781, when the family was attacked by Indians. Some were killed, and the others were taken captive. My gggggrandfather, John Standley, was forced to remain with the Indians as a cook for an extended period of time, after his mother and sisters were exchanged for Indian prisoners. Eventually, the surviving family made their way back to North Carolina where they remained until about 1818. My gggggrandfather then moved the family to an area northeast of Knoxville. In 1843, his son, Joseph Stanley, moved his family to Edgar County, Illinois, and then to northern Missouri in 1856 (so they were still in Illinois at the time of the 1850 census). Most of the family remained there until several family members came to Oregon. Some of them, including my great great grandfather, John Lee Stanley, served in the Civil War, but in the Union Army. David Truman Stanley, John Lee Stanley's eldest child, moved around more than his siblings. He did come to Oregon, but he was briefly in Arkansas, as best I have been able to determine. I need to locate an index for the 1860 census to find out where. I know that he returned to Arkansas, to Fordyce (Dallas County) by 1910, where I believe he was living when he died in July 1917. Some of the family who remained in Tennessee and Missouri might have made their way to Alabama, but I have not yet found any indication of that. 3. I am trying to locate David Truman Stanley in Arkansas in the 1860 census. I know that he took out a land patent in Ashley County in 1863, but I could not find him in the census there in 1860. I think he was probably in some other part of Arkansas in 1860, but I do not have access to the 1860 census index to locate him. Is there someone on the list who might have access to the 1860 census index for Arkansas who could check for me please? I would really appreciate any assistance with this. Thanks. Ken Camber

    2. Would someone do a lookup for me in the book "Excerpts from the Ashley County Eagle, Arkansas 1889-1914"? My great grandmother, Martha S. "Mattie" Ford Lowry (wife of Samuel W. 1. [ARASHLEY] Alexander, Amanda (Williams) & John Stewart
    2. Lisa Wagner
    3. I am beginning to think a space ship dropped these people off in Ashley Co, AR. DeBastrop Twp: 1870 census says that Eleck Stuart was born in Mississippi and Amanda was born in TN. There is another female living in their HH, but I cannot make out the name, she too was born in TN. The unknown female's age is illegible except for the fact she is in her mid to late 50's. 1880 Alexander is listed as being bn in TN; same for Amanda. In their HH there is a John Falkner, my great-grandfather, who later took the name John W. Stewart (or was he adopted?, and an Armand Griffith. There is only one other HH with the name Falkner: J. Falkner 40 bn in GA, Mary 23 bn in AR and stepsons John Turner 6 AR & Joseph White 4 LA. Stepsons parents bn in AR. 1900 Alexander Stewart's HH: Alx Stewart, Amanda Stewart, Mary Williams, niece, John W. Stewart, son, Lula M. Stewart, DIL, and grandchildren. Alexander died either Nov 1900 or 1901 and Amanda died 1905. John Falkner/Stewart disappeared(?) somewhere between the time Alexander and Amanda died. I am trying to figure out how John came to live with the Stewarts. On the 1880 census he is listed as being born in Louisiana and his parents born in Alabama. Amanda is too old to be John's mother and there are no other children. And did he really abandon his family? Family folklore says he was missing a leg; something about a gator getting it. His bestfriend was Evans McClintock who is buried in Parkdale Cemetery. Is there anyone out there who can help me with this? Please! Lisa Wagner

    3. Several people have inquired about the Ashley County Eagle book. It is "Excerpts from the Ashley County Eagle, 1889-1914" published by the Ashley County Genealogical Society in 2000. It's 253 pages of items excerpted from the weekly paper, with an every-name index of 47 pages. Births, marriages, deaths, and society items that show a relationship between people are the main things in the book. Since the courthouse burned in the 1920's, destroying many records, this little paper may be the only place one finds family information. It was for me. I get nothing from the book; I donated it to the Society. If you are interested in finding out about it, go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~arashley Then scroll down to "Y1BKRAshEgleExp1.html" and click on it. I hope it proves useful in your research. Alice K.
