Hi, If you will post a list of the cemeteries you plan to visit I can tell if they are ones I know, and if you could give me some names I will go by to see what I can find out. I can tell you that most the cemeteries around the county are not necessarily maintained by an association, but by the families, if at all - so there is no one in particular to contact generally to obtain information in advance of a visit. There are exceptions, some are very well cared for and there should be contact info - but I don't know off hand who the contacts are. I do live in the county and occasionally visit some of the cemeteries, so have some limited knowledge of some of the ones close to Crossett, and a few others. Anyways, let me know and I will see what I can do. I will be coming to Ashley County in May and would like to know who I could contact in advance to locate some graves. Since my time is limited I would like to do as much prep work as possible. I have maps to all of them but I need a little more. I have 11 cemeteries to visit, but I would like to locate the area in each cemetery before I arrive. I love cemeteries but the rest of my family does not want to spend the night in one. Since the local Genealogical Society published the tombstone book, does someone at the local society have maps and locations of the tombstones? Or Do I need to contact each cemetery directly. Also, what libraries have the largest collection? One last question, my grandfather's sister was married to Eugene A. Hill and I noticed there is a street in Hamburg by the name of Eugene Hill. Does anyone have any information on the naming of the street? The street in question is near the Hamburg Cemetery. Thanks much. Susan Hudgens Searching Hudgens, Nutt, Dew, Holland, Watson, Hill, Maxwell, Hogue & Pippen of Ashley County.

In 1887 Charles Franklin Loomis lost his wife Jeanette Fisher Loomis. In his grief he left Kansas and went back to Arkansas (county unknown) and settled there. The family story goes that while there he became involved in Tabacco business run by a family by the name of Pryor. Would like to connect with anyone who either 1) knows of Charles Franklin Loomis or 2) knows of a Tabacco Business in Arkansas owned or run by a family by the name of Pryor in the 1888's. You just have to contact the newspaper that carried the obit and request a copy of it. Usually they have a small charge for their time. I have requested several and they can be very helpful. > -----Original Message----- > From: Donna Eddins [mailto:dleddins@airmail.net] > Sent: Saturday, January 13, 2001 5:05 PM > To: ARASHLEY-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ARASHLEY] PHILLIPS > > > Hi, > I'm new to the list and am just beginning my research on "one" of my > PHILLIPS lines. > My g-grandmother was Martha Frances "Frannie" PHILLIPS, b. 17 Mar 1878 > in Hamburg, Ashley Co., AR, mar. Hi, I'm new to the list and am just beginning my research on "one" of my PHILLIPS lines. My g-grandmother was Martha Frances "Frannie" PHILLIPS, b. 17 Mar 1878 in Hamburg, Ashley Co., AR, mar. Wilson "Will" Elisha UPSHAW, and died 07 Mar 1918 in Spearsville, Union Par., LA. Her father was Thadrick PHILLIPS who married Martha BRYAN (?BRYANT). I think they stayed in AR. A great aunt told me that she thought Thadrick's father was named Zachariah PHILLIPS. I found the following information in "The Arkansas Gazette Obituaries Index 1819-1879" by Stephen J. Chison: p. 78 PHILLIPS, Zachariah 1873 May 18 - p.01, col. 02 Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the obit. or at least find out the information in it? I've never done an obit. search before. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Donna Walker Eddins dleddins@airmail.net TX

I believe that the S. M. Moore was Simpson Moore, who became a preacher, but I may be mistaken. If so, he bought the land down behind the Prairie Grove Church in Drew Co. on Long Prairie. There were other Moores in this vicinity, too, along with some Harrises that were some connection . These are old stories that I remember my grandfather telling, and I am fuzzy on these.
