So, I have compiled a list of the groups available, that I'm aware of. (There are also a few updates!) And I know there are lots more that I missed, but I wanted to make sure you knew about, and had access to, the county groups. Again, please keep in mind, that many of these are relatively new groups, but there's no better way to spread the news, than "word of mouth". A few people shared the news of our Newton County group, and it now has nearly 1,000 members, with lots of stories, photos, and family connections! Just another resource for researchers!! Author: gwthom_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.occupations.arsawmills/92/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I will relate what I can remember of a story my dad told me as a child. He told of a mill located somewhere along the St. Francis River in Craighead Co. exploding and killing the fireman, I don't believe he was a witness, of course he lived in the nearby community of Black Oak or Caraway and it was big news of the time. He said the fire man did not keep a close eye on the water level in the boiler and let it get low and of course then the temp. and pressure rose to dangerous levels and he panicked and instead of pulling the fire he turned in cold water to the boiler and caused the explosion it killed him instantly and according to my father it blew his body apart and left body parts hanging in the timber around the mill. I don't recall the name of the mill or the owner or who the fellow was that got killed. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DallasTallGal Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.occupations.arsawmills/89.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I also searched for info. on sawmills in Montgomery Co., Ark, as an ancestor died in a sawmill accident. I would suggest seeing what sites Cyndi's List has for the topic, as there is a site specifically dealing with sawmills in Arkansas. Sorry I can't provide the address here. Also, I found the information I was looking for in a compilation of newspaper clippings produced by the county historical society. As a fundraiser for the historical society, the members diligently transcribed the newspapers in their archives. It was worth the price because I found more than three references to the family I was researching, as well as detailed information on the death of the young ancestor. Good luck. You might be able to look in the local newspapers. You can get access to their microfilms that would be great. I know that Harrisburg's Modern News is on microfilm through their library. It might at least help you find out what name was most common if you can find the article on his death. Also, check some of the mortuary's they might give you a copy of his death notice if they still have it in their file. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
