My gg grandfather was Albert LaGrange (aka LeGrange, Grange). He lived in Clarendon, Monroe County, during the 1920s. Albert died December 23, 1924 after falling from a railroad trestle where he was a watchman. I’m trying to find out more about the accident. Does anyone have access to old newspapers from this period? Also, I’d like to know more about what a watchman does and where this railroad trestle was. Thanks for any help you can provide- Debbi

Rachel you are very welcome though I mostly grope around until I find something, much like a (1) blind man, (2) dog with a bone, or (3) democrat. I share the hunt in that my maternal grandfather, John Golladay, a railroadman from the Stuttgart area of AR went to work one day and never returned. Family lore (which I have reason to doubt) has him being struck mortally by a pool cue while watching a fight in a pool room. I joined this list to mostly observe and see if I could pick up a clue. He "got lost" somewhere between 1908-10. AR's unfortunate lack of reliable death records precludes just looking for when and where, exactly, he died. For all I know he took off for Calfornia with a cute blonde. -----Original Message----- From: ar-railroads-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ar-railroads-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Rachel Dobson Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 12:06 PM To: ar-railroads@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AR-RAILROADS] AR-RAILROADS Digest, Vol 2, Issue 1 Ron, Thanks so much for the to-do list! Anyone have a map of the route of the Missouri-Pacific thru MO. and Ar. Relative killed, found on RR track near Salem in Union County. Name James(Jim)Authur Raburn. Unknown RR paid $ 500 for the death sometime after April 1913, bur admitted no liability. Any help appreciatedRachel if you find the names of the archived mewspaper, please share your source with me. I have a clipping from a 1912 paper in Salem, but cant read the full name of the paper as this part was cut off. Thanks Fred Rayburn Tupelo, Ms Researching Willson, Wilson,Raburn,Rayburn.
Hello, My ancestor worked for the Missouri Pacific railroad. Daniel Henry King, born 1857, possibly in Missouri, moved to Tillar, Drew Co., Arkansas and married Sarah Rawls Duncan in 1881. He was killed in a railroad accident about 1900. I've read all the MOPAC related messages, and searched several websites, and it looks like there are no records before about 1910 (as early as NARA railroad records go?). If anyone has any search suggestions, I'd love to hear them. The one thing I haven't done is searched local newspapers for a notice of a train accident or his obituary. Thanks, Rachel Dobson
Don't know if you have the actual date of the accident and death, but I would get those if possible. From there I would probably look for local newspaper items. Public libraries have had old newspapers on reels in many areas and have found item back to early 1900s sometimes. Then of course there's the Ark. Archives in Little Rock. The Pulaski Co public library reference dept found a short funeral notice that I needed for a date in Oct 1904, for example. Good luck in the hunt. -----Original Message----- From: ar-railroads-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ar-railroads-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Rachel Dobson Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2008 9:26 AM To: AR-RAILROADS@rootsweb.com Subject: [AR-RAILROADS] Missouri Pacific in Drew Co., Arkansas Hello, My ancestor worked for the Missouri Pacific railroad. Does anyone on this list know of a source to prove a boiler explosion that occurred between 1906 and 1915? At least one fatality, that of Henry Leslie Hickman, fireman or engineer, I believe it was Rock Island Line, out of Little Rock, Arkansas. I'm having a tough time finding the info. He was married to (Anna) Bell CARNES, widow of W.C. ANDERSON, Sr. Thanks. A. Boyer

Sam, I am no railroad expert, but I do have an interest. My great granfather was a fireman on the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. He was killed in his early 20's in a collision involving 2 trains in Little Rock about 1902. I havn't traced the cities you mention, but I'm wondering if you know your great grandfather travelled by train? It appears that the Little Rock & Memphis Railroad was the first railroad in Arkansas, "a company which held the distinction of operating over the first railroad trackage in Arkansas." That information comes from this site: http://www.trainweb.org/choctawterminal/history.htm The ". . . Little Rock and Memphis Railroad. . . had been organized by a special Act of the Arkansas Assembly on January 11, 1853. . ." "That line had been surveyed in 1854 and four years later the line had been completed from Memphis to Madison, Arkansas, 45 miles west. The next 40 miles to DeVall's Bluff, including a big bridge across the White River, was not completed until 1871. Later that year, through rail service was put into operation between Memphis and Little Rock." http://faculty.simpson.edu/RITS/www/histories/RIHistory.html "So, in 1898, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf bought the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad and then completed the Little Rock-Indian Territory boundary line trackage 151 miles long, including a bridge across the Arkansas River." (See link in last paragraph.) I believe this part of the line went to western Oklahoma through Oklahoma City and made connections to Texas, but not during the time frame you are looking for. Hope this will help you. There may have been other railroads I'm not aware of, but it seems like Little Rock would have been the central hub for them. If you don't have evidence he travelled by train, another possibility would be to look at waterways (riverboats) as an alternative to horse or covered wagon. In case you didn't receive this personally, some VERY important news pertaining to RootsWeb......... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber, We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the RootsWeb.com mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. We've posted the additional details about the update and a current update schedule at the link below. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html This page can also be found by following the link found on http://lists.rootsweb.com. If there are any changes to the schedule, we'll update this page to let you know. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to.
I have records of a family death in 1910, that occured on the railroad track near Salem, Ark in 1910. The railroad ended up paying the family a $500 settlement in 1912 or so. The young man's name was James Authur Raburn (Jim). Any information regarding this incident would be appreciated. Fred Rayburn Tupelo, Ms
Cathy; thanks for responding and for the advice. I will certainly check into that web site (Springfield, MO). When it comes to searching records of employment and a few other topics I'm lost as to what and how to go about searching them. thank you very much lynn dunk
Have you looked on the Springfield (MO) Library website? They have old Frisco Employee magazines online, and I found an obit for my grandfather, also a photo and obit for my great grandmother's brother. It does mention folks in other areas besides Springfield- including some in other states. I never gave it a thought about the railroads being built and maybe that's what might have happened to my great-great grandfather between the years of 1880 and 1900. His name is SELDON C. PILE I am able to locate him and family in CHICKASAWBA, MISSISSIPPI CO., AR. 1880 CENSUS and after that SELDON & MARY JANE (McELYEA) PILE totally disappeared off the face of the earth, along with about 3 or 4 of their children. But, now I'm wondering if SELDON C PILE may have signed up to work for the railroads. So, my question is, how do I go about trying to find out if this is in fact what he did? Did he go to work for the railroads and possibly was killed while working (of course, I'm just guessing on the last part). Any assistance or advice will be greatly appreciated thank you for your assistance in advance Lynn Dunk
Well, I've been looking for employment records for the StLIM&S also, and with just about the same amount of success as everybody else - that is - zip! St. Louis - Iron Mountain Southern Railway Company data [n.d.] It may be that the collection refers only to real estate held by the railroad. However, I hope that it may contain employee records of the men who ran the trains, and with this hope - scant, I think - I ask that you look for the name of John Slowey/Sloey/Sloy, Senior and Junior, both of whom may have worked for the railroad in the period 1876 - 1890.
