Van Buren Press Van Buren, Arkansas- Crawford County March 22, 1890 A FOUL MURDER Morrilton, Ark., March 18.-Peyton James, a deputy sheriff of this county, was foully murdered at Germantown, five miles west of here, last night by two unknown parties. James supposing them to be burglars wanted for cracking a safe at Dover, on Saturday night, went to where they were camped to arrest them, armed only with a shot-gun and with one attendant unarmed. On reaching the camp, fearing both to be armed, James concluded not to attempt to arrest them there, but simply ask them to accompany him to a saloon a short distance, intending to arrest them on reaching the saloon, as he would there have assistance if any resistance was made. The offer was accepted, and all started to the saloon, the two holding James' arms. After going a short distance they surmised James' object, overpowered him, took his gun and shot him down, killing him instantly, and then fled. The murderers were overtaken at Conway this morning but refused to be arrested and fired on the officers, the fire being returned. In the melee the murderers made their escape tot he Arkansas swamps. Sheriff Shelby, with a posse and a pack of bloodhounds, left by rail this evening and the murderers will doubtless be arrested before morning. Fran Alverson Warren
