    3. Fran, I simply don't know how to ask for a look-up. Do I ask for a specific incident or name in a particular time period? I am interested in anything on an Abraham Gregory, A. Gregory or indeed any Gregory mentioned in the 1843-1812 time period. he lived in Scullyville County, Indian Territory, starting about 1855 but was in Fort Smith also during that time. He died in January 1905 and his wife Mary Caroline Merryman Gregory died in 1910. 3. Sandra My microfilmed news papers are for Crawford County Arkansas only and the years are 1843 to 1912. If you contact the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock I believe they would have the microfilmed copies of Boothe, Arkansas for 1929. If you have the exact date of the death they will research it for you for a fee. It has been a while since I requested this type of information and I can not remember their fee but I believe there is a minimum required. I am sorry I am not more familiar with their policy on this. Also you might want to check with the LDS in Salt Lake City, and see what newspapers they have on file for that area and you can order the microfilm through your local LDS location. 3. Van Buren Press (Crawford County, Arkansas) March 23, 1889 A CONDUCTOR IN TROUBLE Mr. M. C. Wallace is responsible for the following: "Some weeks ago Conductor Bill Woolum, who is as popular a railroad man as runs into Fort Smith, was up in the territory and met an Indian who had in his possession an immense bald headed eagle. The Indian wanted to sell his bird and told the conductor that the bird of freedom was a fine singer and was given to warbling national airs after he became familiar with his surroundings. The railroad man recognized that an American Eagle that could discount a mocking bird was a great bird, and made a purchase at once, and bore the bird home to his wife in triumph and informed her that it would be a fine singer as soon as he became acquainted with her. He had a cage made to order, and the bird placed in it, and then he went his way rejoicing. Returning home in a few days his wife complained that the bird refused to sing and confined his energies to catching and devouring chickens that came too near his coop. The owner said he would fix him, and called out his fine setter and turn him in the cage to teach the feather chicken eater some sense. In about two seconds the dog came out minus an eye and part of his tail, and now Mr. Woolum swears that if that bird doesn't sing pretty quick he will give him a dose of dynamite and then hunt up that Choctaw who sold it to him and give him a licking- if he can. -Fort Smith Times. Mr. M. C. Wallace died very suddenly Wednesday morning and "Conductor Bill Woolum, with "all aboard", pulled his train out for "no man's land" where the American Eagle screecheth not. 3. Van Buren Press, Crawford County, Arkansas February 2, 1889 THE LAST OF THE BRUTAL COAL HILL WARDENS BROUGHT BACK FOR TRIAL E. B. Scott, who was at one time warden at the Coal Hill convict camps and who is wanted on a charge of whipping and beating convicts to death, has been arrested at Paris, Texas. Scott has been indicted for his crimes and a reward of $200 was offered for his arrest. The arrest was made by William Franklin, an ex-convict, who worked at the mines while Scott was warden, and who knew of the crimes he committed and of his indictment for the crimes. Scott and Franklin both tramped into the city and happened to meet at one of the depots, where they discovered each other and the arrest was made. Scott attempted to run. He admits that he is the man and has been taken to Johnson county and turned over to the sheriff. Scott is the warden who directed Gaddis and Hall to "kill the d---s-of a b--, Tolbert" in the mines in December 1887. One night he whipped a negro named Andy Frye, hitting him 112 licks. Frye was chained up all night and Scott hit him 96 licks in the morning and the negro died within an hour afterward. He whipped a white man named Mark Elder so bad that he never recovered, and when his body was exhumed it was found to be in a terrible condition. During his term as warden, from October 1 to January 1, 1887, Scott was drunk half the time, and when in this condition his cruelty knew no bounds. One night when drunk, he whipped seventy-five men, hitting them an average of fifty licks with a leather strap. The skin was broke on each man's back and the blood ran out on the floor. Scott cannot be tried until the May term of the Johnson Circuit Court, and he will be kept in jail at Clarksville until then.

    3. Van Buren Press - Crawford County, Arkansas February 9, 1889 BELLE STARR ASSASINATED Fort Smith, Ark., February 5.- News reached here last tonight, confirming the report of the assassination of the notorious Belle Starr. She was shot from ambush by unknown parties on the Choctaw side of the Canadian River near her home. Some of the people think there is no truth in the matter and that it was but a ruse to get her husband away from Fort Smith, where he is to answer to a charge of horse stealing. He has several times before put off trials in a similar manner. Fran Alverson Warren

    3. January 5, 1889 BROTHERS IN LAW FIGHT A DUEL Parties from Craighead County bring particulars of a shocking tragedy near Marked Tree. Some time ago the wife of William West, who is a desperate character left him and returned to the home of her mother, Mrs. Mary Dairey, and announce her intention of getting a divorce. West called to see his wife, but she would not receive him, and his mother in law, Mrs. Dairey, went out on the porch, carrying the year-old child of the couple. West began to upbraid her, saying she had caused the trouble between his wife and himself. Stephen Dairey, aged about 40 years, was attracted to the porch by the dispute, and ordered West to leave the premises. West responded by drawing a six-shooter and firing twice, one ball passing through Mrs. Dairey's hand and the other striking Stephen Dairey in the face. Dairey got a repeating rifle and returning to the porch, leveled it at West who faced him with his revolver poised in the air. The men fired twice in rapid succession. West was shot through the heart adn died in a few minutes. Dairy was struck in the right eye, the ball ranging upward to the brain. He lived several hours. Mrs. Dairey's wound is not fatal. 3. May 20, 1905 Van Buren Press, Crawford County, Arkansas DEATH OF Mrs. Dr. Williams In the Mulberry Siftings of this week we find the following notice of the death of one of the oldest citizens of Crawford County. Dr. Williams died in Van Buren soon after the war and is remembered by but few of our older citizens. Mrs. Margaret Dyer, who was once the widow of Dr. D. D. Williams, died recently near Belmont, this county. She was one of the oldest settlers in Crawford County, having lived in the county for over half a century. She was born in Wales about 75 years ago and was married to Dr. D. D. Williams in 1853 and took a steamer at London soon after her marriage and sailed for America. She was noted for her charity and was her delight to look after the poor and could not be excelled as a nurse in the sick room. She was a member of the C. P. Church of the old Mulberry congregation. She was in poor health for several years before her death and she was glad no doubt when the summons came and called her up higher. Your correspondent will remember her for her kindness during the dark days of the sixties, when she took an active part in helping the distressed where ever she found them. A Friend.
