    1. [AR-OLD-NEWS] Where to find old AR newspapers
    2. Nan & George Wolf
    3. Janet asked: >Where would find the Arkansas Gazette or Arkansas Democrat? and Betty wrote: "Go to this for newspapers http://usnewspaperlinks.com" Janet and Betty: That link is for today's newspapers. You might contact the AR Gazette-Democrat listed at that site and see if they will do lookups in their old papers. The old Van Buren papers are not on the list. The AR History Commission has the index to the AR Gazette and has copies of the very old newspapers on microfilm. The Little Rock Main Library (down by the river) also has the microfilms of the old newspapers. The Ft. Smith library has almost all of the Van Buren and Ft. Smith papers of the old days in the Sebastian/Crawford area but I don't know if it has copies of the old AR Gazettes. I do know that the AR History Comm. does not do research for people. Perhaps the AR USGenWeb site has names of volunteers that will do research at Little Rock. I also do not know if the Little Rock library has lookup volunteers - it might be worth looking to see if it has a web site. I know that the Ft. Smith library does have a web site and does lookups for a base charge of $10, I believe, with charges of .25 for copies.. Regards, Nan Wolf 71532.734@compuserve.com

    3. Obituaries from old papers don't seem to give out the kind of information that you see in todays papers. I remember reading a notice about a relative's death, and it said he leaves a wife and 2 children, no names of parents, siblings, or even of the wife or children. I doubt it would have even been reported, except he died in a shooting, and that was what made the news. 3. Van Buren Press Van Buren, Arkansas August 31, 1889 A BAD MAN Last Sunday U. S. Deputy Heck Thomas brought into Fort Smith from the Territory Oscar Coulter, a desperado, wanted in Logan County. In 1881, when but 18 years of age, Coulter was indicted in Georgia for arson and, escaping from the sheriff, came to this state and joined his relatives in Logan County. His early training fitted him exactly for his assumption of the character of "the bad man from Georgia" which he endeavored to carry out to the letter. His numerous escapades gave his relatives a great deal of trouble, so much indeed that Charles B. Maysey, a cousin, notified Georgia authorities of his whereabouts. His arrest and conviction followed and a term of five years in the penitentiary did not serve to lessen the ill feeling with which he regarded the cousin who had given him up to justice. When arrested he swore vengeance against him and immediately upon his release posted off to Arkansas with blood in his eye. Arriving at Golden City, where his relatives resided, he stopped all night with a man named Gillespie and on the following morning rode up to Charles Maysey's store and dismounted. Coulter immediately began abusing Maysey for having been the cause of his arrest. Both drew their pistols and opened fire about the same time, Coulter receiving a shot in the neck and Maysey dying from a bullet in the brain. The former cooly mounted his horse and rode away, the terrified onlookers not daring to move a hand. Shortly after his departure he was pursued, but the trail was abandoned at the territory line where it was lost. Since that time Coulter is supposed to have wandered though California, Arizona and New Mexico, and to have been connected with the train robbery of last summer near Muskogee. Fran Alverson Warren

    3. Julia, I will do for you what I promised Janet for her query: My memory says I have searched all the files I know about for your Dentist, but what the heck--I will do it again. The Arkansas Gazette is on microfilm at the Arkansas History Commission & State Archives, the Central Arkansas Library in Little Rock and many universities and colleges. It is indexed in typescript from 1819-1899 & 1960 by Librarian Shannon Henderson at Arkansas Technical University in Russellville, AR. We have this microfilm at Harding University in Searcy where I am a professor emeritus, and I have made myself a note to check the index on my next trip to the campus. I will check the index for 'Deaths,' 'Murder,' and the surname. This will discover it, if it exists. With the date, page and column locating the article, you can order it from the History Commission for $5 in AR or $10 out of state. If I can print it here I will, but will need your snail address in order to mail the actual copy to you. Weekends are notoriously busy for me, but I will make the search within 5 days--5 hours, if possible.
