Fran, I enjoy your articles from the past. I always read with anticipation because someday it just might be about one of my ancestors. Thanks for your prompt reply. Let me tell you a little more about Samuel David Streeter. He came to AR after 1846, from Mississippi,( leaving three sons whose mother had died) and was being divorced by a second wife in 1851. Some stories say that he drowned around that time, but others say that he lived on and might have even participated in some of the shipping activity of the Civil War. There is one Muskogee mentioned that I believe is too late to have been his ship. It was later in the 1800 or might be the early 1900. His ship would have had to be earlier than that. A good newspaper article about the divorce or the ship would make my day. Anything would be helpful and very much appreciated. Glenda In the Arkansas Intelligencer and the Van Buren Press, I see and have extracted many items pertaining to the old steamships that plied the Arkansas River. I have seen the Muskogee mentioned many times and I will see what I can find for you pertaining to this steamship. I am hoping to eventually do an extrentsive research on the old steamboats of the Arkansas River and have been earmarking information about the Steamships and the Captains for this purpose! Will let you know if I can find anything helpful for you. Hello, My name is Glenda Romine. I am looking for information about my gggrandfather. His name is Samuel David Streeter. He was being divorced in September of 1851 by Martha M. I am told there are no existing copies of the paper. The last census I have for him is 1850 in Phillips Co. Arkansas living in the household of Zemeri Barney who was a farmer. Samuel is listed as a laborer. However, family stories say that he owned, operated, or other wise worked on a riverboat in the White River. According to the story his boat sank and he drowned. Thank you for taking the time to read about this 'brick wall' of mine. Glenda Romine
I think the problem might be that you are subscribed in the Digest Mode. Perhaps we can get you on the list so that you will receive the individual listings and that will correct the problem you are experiencing. I was with AOL for a long time and it was hard to get used to the difference with Outlook express. Let's try the single listing and I believe you will be much happier than with the digest mode. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill & Juanita Autry" <wja4032@bossig.com> To: <AR-OLD-NEWSPAPERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2001 9:35 PM Subject: [AR-OLD-NEWS] Re: AR-OLD-NEWSPAPERS-D Digest V01 #30 > I don't know if I am stupid or what, but icannot access anything except the > subject on your new site. Regarding the Basham obit pasted below: Margaret "Elizabeth" Hinds, the dau. of Margaret Ann Mattix, and granddaughter of Edward Mattix/Eliz. Bond married John Marion Basham on 1 July 1852 near Van Buren, AR. Family researchers said John Marion was a son of Solomon Basham and Eliz. Coffee Marlar of Crawford Co. so I am guessing this fellow in the obit below may have been a cousin since he has a different father. Margaret Hinds Basham's brothers settled in Tulare Co. California where this Wm P. Basham below died so I am guessing there is a connection somewhere. Fran, I'm glad to have found you over here at Old Newspapers. I always knew that my family name would some day appear in one of your clippings, sure enough, it did, on this article. One could wish it would have been under better circumstances, but history can't be changed. Keep up the good work of presenting us with glimpses of the past. I enjoy them and always have. Frank Blankenship Van Buren Press Van Buren, Arkansas- Crawford County September 21, 1889 THE DEATH SENTENCE Judge R. H. Powell has passed the sentence of death on J. G. Blankenship and fixed the date of execution on October 17th at Yellville, Ark. Blakenship was convicted at the recent term of the Marion County Circuit Court of rape. The crime is alleged to have been committed on the person of Mary J. Fisher, near Lead Hill, June 30, 1888. Blankenship having been arrested afterward and has been in jail ever since. At the October term, 1888, of the Marion Circuit Court, he was tried, but the result was a hung jury, eleven being for rendering a verdict of guilty and one for acquittal. Immediately after his conviction he wrote a lengthy letter to the Judge protesting his innocence. Judge Powell, after considering the matter, modified the death sentence a little by ordering the doomed man be kept in the Boone County Jail until the 16th of October, and that he be brought back to Marion County on the 16th and executed on the 17th. He was taken to Harrison Saturday. There will be no appeal taken, and the doomed man's life depends now entirely on the clemency of the Governor. Fran Alverson Warren
Frank, You're very welcome. I hate to admit it but there have been occasions when I've traveled quite a distance to do research and after looking at all the "usual indexes" at the courthouse and finding nothing, I find my ancestors in the "criminal records" :o)! Be they, Saint, Sinner, or something in between, we still love, honor and admire our ancestors for the most part! ----- Original Message ----- From: <Lonewolf1498A@aol.com> To: <AR-OLD-NEWSPAPERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2001 2:31 PM Subject: Re: [AR-OLD-NEWS] September 21, 1889 Van Buren Press > Fran, I'm glad to have found you over here at Old Newspapers.
