Ditto, I completely agree. I have tried for years to get a definite death date on my grandmother and do not want to miss it because of some moron. Thank you Fran and Bless you. I usually try to stay out of these things but I am also quite opinionated! I am new to this list, in fact less than 24 hours subbed. I dislike seeing such attacks on people and it really makes a list look bad and distasteful. We are all here for, generally, the same purpose. We are interested in researching our heritage. Some of us are writers and publishers, such as Fran and myself. I don't know Fran but I can speak from experience and say that just typing the basic info in takes valuable time away from what she might need to do. She seems to be the type who wants to help others and that is a wonderful trait. It really is inappropriate that she should have to defend herself so publicly. The name-calling also is distasteful. I laugh sometimes, because we as adults, tend to act like children over the internet! LOL Anyway, I commend anyone who takes the time to offer a teeny bit of info for others. I am backlogged myself with cemetery photo requests and writing, so remember folks, its out of the kindness and generosity of others, that we are able to find some information. Fran, keep up the good work. You are a gem and if anyone doesn't see that, well then just shame on them! I see this can be a lively list and I think I will find much enjoyment being subscribed to it! Thanks to Diana for going to all the work to moderate so many lists!! wow!! Toni
The way I see it, Fran has posted indexes that were compilations from the actual newspapers and put into books for easier research for those of us that have no other way of finding the information. I have several of her books and am very pleased with what is in them. I could never have found the information I have from these books. The indexes led me to the right books. A great work has been done here and some people just don't know how to appreciate what has been done. Fran posted the indexes to help others. Posted a few articles from that work. A genealogists treasure. Now, there are those that are offended by what she is trying to accomplish. She wants to help but doesn't want to offend. Posting the indexes help a great many, while offending a few. What would you do if you were in her shoes, sacrifice the help for the offense or keep on offending those offended. If I were her, I would keep on posting them and not worry about those offended because evidently they are not interested in the same thing we are that are trying to find information. Maybe they already have the information and is not sharing. After all, isn't that what these lists are all about. I give THREE CHEERS for Fran. Keep up the good and worthwhile work. Jeannie
Fran we defended you and your postings and now we feel that we have been taken advantage of. Was your intention just to get us interested then stop so we would buy your books or am I mistaken. I enjoyed your newspapar postings even though I don't have any Family in Arkansas. Well Belle Starr is a distant relative but I already have all the info you posted on her, because she is famous I found her on the internet. Can you explain what you were doing? Martha in Alabama
I'm disappointed with the complaining and misunderstanding I've seen regarding the index postings by Fran Warren. Until the hissing and spitting began on this list, I did not know that she had written any books. I would like to thank those of you who have made an issue of this for bringing it to my attention. I've discovered that I can save myself years of research by making use of her very reasonably priced books! This difficult year is almost over. May I suggest that we try and bring it to an end with a spirit of cooperation and understanding rather than one of dissension and mistrust. I think we all enjoy doing genealogy more when things are peaceful. Joy <holley@centurytel.net>
I believe the best thing for everyone is to get busy contributing to the list as I intend to continue doing and to complain privately to anyone. My e-mail address is shown on all the postings I make to the list. All I ask is that if there is a question or a concern with any posting I make to the list, please e-mail me privately and DON'T blast me or suggest I have ulterior motives to everyone on the list. Anyone is welcome to go buy their own personal reader and purchase the microfilms themselves and post items to the list just as I do. I will continue to post as I have for the benefit of the entire list. Fran, I thank you for posting the indices. The indices afford us the opportunity to know whether or not there is information available on a particular surname It makes no difference whether or not we have the information online or not. Martha would you kindly e-mail me privately concerning this matter. I am in NO way trying to mislead anyone in any way and I do not have the time to defend myself and my posting on a daily basis. The long and the short of the matter is that I have invested in excess of $1,000 of my own personal money for a microfilm reader and numerous rolls of microfilm. Add to that the fact that I have contributed NUMEROUS hours of my personal time and submitted hundreds of newspaper items to a large number of folks who have been very supportive and grateful for my contributions. I have completely ceased to post items to one list because I do NOT desire to offend or upset anyone and I am NOT naieve enough to believe that anyone can please EVERYONE! I will repeat again and this is the last time I will address this issue.......the names that are in the indexes that I post to the list are names that I found in the newspaper. I gave the name of the newspaper and the year that it was printed. If I have offended anyone, I am truly sorry but I feel like I am being forced to defend myself yet again and I won't continue to do so. I believe I have contributed to the lists that I am a member on and if anyone disagrees, I would appreciate if they would address me privately in the future. Fran, Please do not quit listing the indexes to your books. If you do, my Great Grandmother, Virginia L. Bailey might just appear in one of them, and I would never know it. Others, It takes much time to write, and index these books, and if there is even 100 people on the list, think how much time it would take to do just one lookup for each of these people. I do free lookups from the materials I have here at home, for people who request my help, but I don't do "Give me all the Smiths", if you want this kind of help, you need to either: A. buy a book B. Go to a library that has this book C. Pay someone to do lookup for you Helping people find a relative is fun, but it takes lots of time, and you wouldn't go to a job and work for free for very long, so please, consider what you are requesting. Hope I didn't step on too many toes!! Jettie Henley Parrish
Hi Fran, I want to express my appreciation of your efforts. I enjoy the stories even tho most of my people are in central AR (Yell, Garland, Montgomery) and probably don't appear. There are always people on these lists you complain because they don't get the whole thing for free never considering the amount of labor involved. Fran, Since I posed the question earlier, I feel that I need to again apologize for any misunderstanding. I tried to carefully word my query regarding the purpose of this list, so as not to offend you or anyone else. I just wanted to be clear on what the intent was for starting this list. I am only one person, and I have only recently joined the list. During that time I have seen materials posted that were from the index for people. I posed a query regarding one name on the list, and there was never a response. I do not wish to make it look like I was not aware of the value of your work. I do. I have been searching for the past 30 years. During that time I have done a lot of lookups for people in materials that I have purchased. I share freely with anyone on the lists to which I belong, and I look carefully at peoples queries and respond if I can help. I know what time and investment it takes to be involved in this work. Though I saw many names on your lists that are in my Northern AR families, I did not pose queries about any except one of these, because I know what sort of time and effort is involved. If I felt that there was something concrete which would fit into my research, I would be the first to ask how to purchase materials you might have to offer. I do feel that it was not clear as to what was to be expected here, and I asked for clarification. I am sorry that you are offended, and I hope that you will continue with your work. I hope that others will continue to seek your help. Kay Cooper, CA, researching families in Cleburne, Van Buren, White, Stone, Searcy, Marion & Independance Co from 1820's on.

Fran, I do really appreciate all you do for us! I have some of your books on my list to Santa and am more than willing to pay such a small price for them as they will save me a lot of legwork, I'm sure! Yes, I am getting the message. If the majority of you would prefer, I will refrain from posting the indexes to the books on this list. I thought I was being helpful and that everyone would be able to understand that it would be time consuming to do look-ups on this many names. If anyone would like the indexes of any future books e-mailed to them, please e-mail me privately and I will get them out to you. As Diana pointed out earlier, the index allows members to find their ancestor(s) name and also what year they were mentioned in the Van Buren Press. These microfilms are available at the History Commission in Little Rock, Arkansas. The cost of the film is $25 per roll and a microfilm reader is a valuable asset when one doesn't have a great deal of time to spend in the public facilities doing research. List Mom are you reading this? Martha in Alabama
But you are right, why are the names being published if we can't get any more info on them. There should be an explanation. Martha in Alabama.
Hi Everyone, What we are doing is joining together as a mailing list pertaining to old Arkansas newspapers, we are not here to sell ANYTHING. What Fran is doing is posting some indices from some of the books she has published, not to necessarily sell them, OR to do look-ups, but to give us some kind of an idea of what we can find in those area newspapers for any given time period. This has its advantages in that we have the opportunity then to contact our local library, who can do an inter-library loan from the library who holds these microfilms. Or you can contact (by phone or in writing) the Arkansas History Commission, and given the approximate date of publication, they will then do a look-up for (most generally) a very small fee. It at least lets us know that these documents are available, and where to look to find them. If someone decides they want to purchase one of Fran's books, that is their choice, but they DO have alternatives, and that is NOT the reason Fran posts the indices. She does it to help others locate family. And, if truth be known, she posts just as much as she publishes. I recall a previous email sent in by Fran, which said.... >>From time to time, while I am in the process of transcribing the items to go into these books, I post some of the items to the list so that others can learn and enjoy them along with me. I don't think it would be proper for me to use the list as a means to promote my books<< The purpose of the list is for the posting and requesting of old Arkansas newspapers articles. If someone can do look-ups, that just makes it better. If you have ANY newspaper clippings you would like to share, please feel free to do so. Fran and quite a few others, have been kind enough to share quite a bit of information with us, and I would like to thank them for taking the time to do so, as I know this is VERY time consuming, not to mention expensive, for those who do this. I do not mean to be rude, but I would like clarification on what we are doing at this site.
