I have tried to find out where the cornwall branch started, but as you say Josiah is only a guess. It could be they came from the Ewhurst area of sussex only because there were a number of APSE mentioned in the 1600's. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Or do you have a burial record or MI which gives his year of death and age? Or, better still, have you found a possible christening record somewhere? Josiah's marriage to Loveday Thomas is the earliest record I've found of the Apps name in Cornwall, although my searches have been limited to online sources (as I live in Canada, a visit to the records office is impractical). I picture Josiah as having been born in SE England (where most of the Apps families were living at that time) and coming to Cornwall as a young man, possibly a sailor. Unfortunately I haven't seen any references for a Josiah Apps baptism anywhere in the country in a suitable time frame (e.g., 1700-1730), so it'll all just supposition for now. Josiah was my 5xg-grandfather and I'd love to be able to pursue this line back further; if you can shed any light regarding his year of birth, that would be most appreciated. I was brought up in Brede, my mother was Jean Apps, and according to my Family Tree Maker software, William who emigrated to Australia was my "2nd great-granduncle. I am descended from William's brother Seymour. I have accumulated quite a large amount of Apps family history data, a lot provided by others researchers. This is mainly from Eastern Sussex and also for a family of ship-builders in the Chichester area of West Sussex. The family trees for our family that I have go back, with a degree of certainty to William Apps who married Susannah Chalker in Guestling on 7 April 1702. Guestling is about 3 miles to the South of Brede. If I can help please send an email. I wonder if your ancestor might be the Thomas APPS baptised in St. Endellion on December 25, 1795, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (nee BOSANKOE) APPS. Thomas Sr. and Elizabeth were married in St. Endellion on September 22, 1787. According to information I obtained from the St. Endellion OPC some years ago, Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children (shown with date of baptism): Jenny May 17 1789; Mary Anne Aug 28 1791; William May 19 1793; Thomas Dec 25 1795; Joseph Mar 10 1799; Betsey Feb 28 1802; Loveday Apr 01 1804; Sally Mar 09 1806. Thomas Sr. was baptized January 9, 1763, the son of Josiah and Loveday (nee THOMAS) APPS, who were married April 20, 1749 in Endellion. My 4xg-grandmother, Joanna APPS, bp. May 6, 1753, was a sister to Thomas Sr. Thomas was buried September 19, 1835, aged 73. >From another family history site, I believe that Elizabeth BOSANKOE (or BOSANKO) was the daughter of William and Susanna (nee HAMLEY) BOSANKOE, who married February 15, 1762, also in St. Endellion. She was buried October 14, 1825, aged 61. There is a brief mention of Thomas Sr., his brother Josiah, and his son William in "The History of Port Isaac and Port Quin" (see www.jnorichards.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/HISTPOPQ.html). I don't know anything about Thomas Jr. or his wife - there appears to be an 1824 marriage for a Thomas APPS somewhere in Cornwall, but my credits at Family History Online (http://www.familyhistoryonline.org.uk/) have expired, so I can't give you any additional details. I hope that this is of some help - Tim Perrott Ottawa, Canada Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
