    2. Simon Osborne
    3. Dear all, It's been over 10 years since i subscribed to a rootsweb mailing lists; how time flies. I have a probable connection to a Thomas Apps born in Birmingham between Apr-Jun 1893 having married an Elsie Winters (born Birmingham Oct-Dec 1897) on 10 Sep 1924. My research shows they had a daughter called Margaret Apps born Jul-Sep 1934 who i believe died within the year. >From my research on FreeBMD i found a death for Thomas in Apr-Jun 1968 and Elsie in Jan-Mar 75. I'm particularly interested in communicating with any living relative who may know any info on Elsie's mother, Susan Winters nee Osborne who died in 1953. Susan was the sister of my Great Grandfather and strangely no one in the family knew of her existence until i came across it in my research. However i and happy to learn anything of the Apps and Winters families if there is any information available. I look forward to hearing from you in due course. Kind regards, Simon Osborne Apps - Birmingham Begley - Ireland/Birmingham Bowles - Lambeth, London Croft - Birmingham/Staffordshire Digby - Any Duffield - Birmingham Henson - Birmingham Hinton - Birmingham Jarvis - Birmingham?/Warks King - London Larvin - Ireland/Wolverhampton/Birmingham Mealey/Maley/Meeley - Ireland /Warks Newton - Birmingham Osborne - Birmingham Winters - Birmingham

Chowne is a landed gentry family name in Sussex and Kent. Female family surnames that did not want to be lost in marriage were occasionally passed down as son's first names eg Bray, Spelzer in the Chowne family. I think I would be looking for Chowne Apps Chowne connection through a female line - mother or grandmother being a Chowne. Have you done anymore research since we last corresponded in 2010? I have begun researching our Happs family there in England and am adding photos where ever I have been able to find them. Do you have any photos of any of the Apps Happs family members? I haven`t worked on the line for awhile. Hope to hear from you soon. Author: perrott1955 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.apps/98.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found two Loveday THOMAS baptisms in Cornwall in the expected time frame: the first on November 22, 1724 in Ludgvan, with father Wiiliam; the second on March 14, 1727 in St Martin by Looe, with father Joseph. Neither parish is particularly close to St Endellion, although St Martin by Looe is the closer of the two. I'm not convinced that either of these girls is 'our' Loveday, as there were already THOMAS families living in Endellion during this period. More evidence is needed, I think. Looking at the APPS records for New Shoreham, Sussex, I noticed that Chowne and Elizabeth's son Derek (bpt. March 14, 1688) was buried on December 17, 1693, with a note saying "a Quaker, buried in the churchyard, without church burial." This makes me wonder whether the APPS might have been Quakers. I was aware that Josiah was a witness at a Quaker marriage in Cornwall in 1758 (see http://bit.ly/VMtGjB and look at item 43), although that by itself is not conclusive, since all wedding guests, including non-Quakers, could be witnesses. I took a quick look for other APPS Quaker links but couldn't find any, although this may be worth pursuing if someone has the time and resources. Happy searching, cousins! I have found Blacksmiths among Josiah's descendants (via his daughter Johanna's arm of the tree) along with the mariners, fishermen and farm labourers. it's not easy is it?
