Perhaps someone who attends could tell us all about it? Becky Applegate <becky_kato@yahoo.com> wrote: Well, nothing like the last minute to announce something, but I think I just got this email yesterday. There is an Applegate reunion in Oregon TOMORROW, August 6, in case you live in Oregon. Looks like they will have CDs for sale with family interviews - well, you read the message. Here are the details emailed to me: Howdy! This is an update of Sunday's Applegate Reunion program and an appeal for those of you who still aren't sure if you are coming or not. Again the reunion will be at Champoeg State Park a couple of exits south of Wilsonville on I-5. Signs will guide you to the park less than 10 miles from the freeway exit. Once you enter the park, ask the person in the entry booth how to get to Oak Grove picnic site #4. (It's the site with the shelter.) Entrance to the park is $3 per vehicle, no matter how many people are in your vehicle. For you early birds, a pancake breakfast hosted by Frank Cunningham will begin at 8:00 AM. The short family meeting starts at 10:00 AM which will include old business, new business, any agenda items anyone wants to add, and selection of officers for those organizing next year's reunion. At 11:00 the program begins. Our featured speaker is Leta Neiderheiser who is writing a biography on Jesse Applegate. She will talk on Jesse's political views, though as a knowledgeable historian, I'm sure we'll probably be able to get her to answer questions on the history of the family during those early days of Oregon. Frank Cunningham will present information on the history of the area around Champoeg including the French fur traders at nearby French Prairie. I will talk a little about the meeting that was held at the park location in 1843 that initiated the formation of the State of Oregon. That, of course, was the same year that the Applegates came on the large wagon train along the Oregon Trail from Missouri. The Applegates spent their first winter in Oregon at the abandoned Whitman Mission just a dozen or so miles south of the park, and set up a ferry across the Willamette River at that site (that still operates today!) At 1:00 PM the potluck will begin. It will even be serenaded by music. Please bring a main dish and either a salad or a dessert. Some special opportunities will occur at this year's reunion. Melody Dean will be bringing a scanner to copy any old family photos you may have to add to the Applegate Family archive. So bring those old family photo albums! Dave Bigler, a great, great, great grandson of Lindsay Applegate will bring his digital video and audio setup to record family stories. I know many people are sad that they didn't write down or record stories from older relatives while they were still alive, so we would like to start a family oral history project to at least start to recording memories from the past. Dave recently moved to Oregon from Colorado and is starting a business producing professional quality wedding videos. He will record the speakers and during the breaks (after breakfast, after the family meeting, after the history presentations, and after the potluck) any stories you would like to share with future generations of Applegates. So think about those old stories you may have heard as a kid from older relatives so we can save them! Dave will even burn CDs of the program and interviews for those of you who want your own copies for $25. (He can be reached on his website: biglerproductions.com or at (503) 488-5896 if you have other family events you want recorded.) We will have the large family tree diagram made by Susan Applegate for last year's reunion, so everyone can put on a sticker where they fit on the family tree. While we are all pretty much aware of the roots, trunk, and major branches of our family tree - as a family we have not kept up very well with the current little branches and apples out on the edge of our huge tree. I want to thank Melody Dean, our computer angel, for updating the lists with phone numbers, mailing addresses, and e-mail addresses of current living members. I am hopeful that we can update our tree and list of current and newly born members of the Applegate Family, so that for future reunions, more Applegate descendants can be contacted. Champoeg Park is a very large and beautiful historic park. In addition to the visitors center museum (that comes free with park admission), the Daughters of the American Revolution operate two museums on site. One is the Pioneer Mother's Cabin on the river nearby the pavilion and obelisk that marks the location where the State of Oregon was founded, and the other is the Newell House located just outside the park that houses an old school house, an old jail, and other items from 150 years ago. Those museums have separate entrance fees and are open from 1 to 5 PM. In addition the park has on-going historic programs that people can attend in the afternoon. One is a tour of the 1860's kitchen garden that is growing behind the visitor's center. Another is a guided tour of the site of the town of Champoeg that existed in the 1800's, but disappeared in 1861. That tour begins near the Pioneer Mothers Cabin at 3:30. There are bike trails and a dock (but no boat ramp), so bring bicycles and canoes if you want to ride around the huge park or paddle in the slow moving Willamette River. I hope to see you Sunday at the reunion! Tom Halferty, Applegate Family President for 2006 Dan M wrote: months are flying by and the Applegate list is sorta in linbo How about Family lore week. The reunion on Sunday sounds great, but I have to be at a National Guard thing instead. Let us know if anyone goes, please? LaVelle NottNott@wvi.com
