    3. A very kind person shared his scrapbook with Nebraskan genealogists. Here are the Applegate articles he sent to me and said I could share with all of you. Good and bad, there's a lot of history here. Becky APPLEGATE ARTICLES Lincoln | The Nebraska State Journal | 1900-02-01 An order was issued yesterday discharging several members of the Second regiment, Nebraska national guard. Private Roy R. Applegate, company G, was discharged without honor. Lincoln | The Nebraska State Journal | 1901-03-21 Arth Applegate went out hunting yesterday afternoon and shot a muskrat. He thought it was an otter til he tried to sell it, and found it was only worth ten cents. Arth can be found at his place of business this morning, handing out Pittsburg stories. The Lincoln Daily Star | 1917-04-13 Complies With Order. – Police Judge Whitmore Friday morning annulled a thirty day sentence imposed upon G.A. Applegate, of Havelock, on April 2 for intoxication. Defendant was fined $1 and costs. The change of sentence was ordered by the district judge, who held the violation of the city ordinance could be made punishable only by fines. Applegate brought habeas corpus proceedings to secure his release from jail and the subsequent court order was made. The Evening State Journal And Lincoln Daily News | 1918-12-14 A Lincoln member of the marines who held the Germans at Chateau-Thierry, Jean Applegate, returned Friday evening to his home. He is the son of Mrs. Ida Applegate, 329 South Eighteenth Street. In the battle where the American marines played such a big part in saving Paris. Private Applegate was wounded, suffering a fractured leg and slight injuries in the arm and side. He left France October 29, after eight months service overseas. The Lincoln Star | 1927-02-20 Mrs. Eugene L. Potter returned Saturday from Seattle, Wash., where she was called a few weeks ago on account of the illness of her mother, Mrs. Ida Appplegate. Mrs. Applegate is recovering from her operation and returned to Lincoln with her daughter. The Lincoln Star | 1930-09-21 Miss Loleta Applegate was honoree at a surprise party, held at the home of Miss Ferol Swallow Monday evening the occasion being her birthday. The evening was spent in games. The late lunch was served at small tables appointed in lavender and green. Miss Applegate was the recipient of many gifts. The Lincoln Star | 1931-06-23 Mary A. Applegate, died at 9:45 o’clock Monday night at the home, 2418 South Eighth street. She was seventy years of age. She is survived by her husband, Nelson; five daughters, Mrs. Ed Chidester of Dakota City; Mrs. Will Cogdill Menlo, Kas., Mrs. Jake Scott, Mrs. Grace Eissler and Mrs. Russell Morris all of Lincoln; four sons, Herman of Lincoln, Charles of Walthill, Dean of Winnebago and James of Grand Valley, Colo.; two sisters, one brother, twenty grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The body is at Wadlow’s pending funeral arrangements. The Lincoln Star | 1933-09-07 Herman H. Applegate, funeral services for Mr. Applegate were held at St. Mary’s cathedral Thursday morning, Msgr. P.L. O’Loughlin in charge. Interment at Calvary. The Lincoln Star | 1933-09-18 NELSON APPLEGATE DIES TWO WEEKS AFTER SON’S DEATH Nelson K. Applegate, 81, 2418 South Eight street, died at 10:45 o’clock Sunday evening at a local hospital. A son, Herman H. Applegate, died two weeks ago. Mr. Applegate had lived in Lincoln for twenty years, coming here from Union. He was born in Cincinnati, and later lived in Iowa and Kansas. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Ed Chidester of Dakota City, Neb., Mrs. Will Cogdillof Menlo, Kas., Mrs. Jacob Scott, Mrs. Grace Eissler and Mrs. A.R. Morris, all of Lincoln; and four sons, Charles of Dakota City, Dean of Winnebago, James of Lincoln and Guy in Colorado. The body is at Wadlow’s spending funeral arrangements. Lincoln | Evening State Journal | 1936-08-20 Funeral service for Richard Lee Applegate will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Wadlows, Rev. C.W. Smith in charge. Burial in Cook cemetery. Pallbearers, Billy Goggins, Raymond Riaker, Claude Houward, Harold McGraw. Lincoln | Evening State Journal | 1938-08-11 SUHAY, APPLEGATE TO DIE Federal Agent’s Slayers to Be Hanged Friday LEAVENWORTH, Kas. Robert Suhay and Glenn Applegate, convicted slayers of a federal agent, thumbed thru detective story magazines as prison officials completed arrangements for the first double hanging in Kansas in more than half a century. The pair is scheduled to die at 3 a.m. Friday on a double gallows in the recreation yard of the federal prison for the murder of W.W. Baker of Yuma, Ariz., federal bureau of investigation agent, slain in the Topeka post office April 15, 1937. Baker was shot when federal agents attempted to arrest Suhay, Applegate for the $18,500 robbery of a Katonah, N.Y. bank. They were captured later in Nebraska. The Supreme Court denied their appeals for clemency after their convictions. Prison officials reported 26 year-old Suhay was becoming nervous as time for the execution approached. ‘Applegate, 45, apparently remained indifferent. Both have declined services of ministers or priests. “You can’t do me any good,” Applegate commented, “All of my friend are in hell.” Lincoln | The Nebraska State Journal | 1938-12-02 GOLDIE P. APPLEGATE DEAD Latin Teacher in Lincoln High School 18 Years. Miss Goldie P. Applegate, 1719 L. St., Latin teacher in Lincoln high school for 18 years, died in Lincoln at 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with burial in Nebraska City. Principal of O’Neill high school from 1917 to 1920, she came to Lincoln high school from O’Neill. Miss Applegate was a member of the Women’s Education club and the Thursday evening club. She received her A.B. degree from the University of Nebraska in 1916 and an M.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1930. Surviving are her father, M.L. Applegate of Peru, three sisters, Mrs. J.A. Johnson of Rohrs, Neb., Mrs. Elden Titus of Plainview and Miss Amy Applegate of Chicago Heights, Ill.; three brothers. Everett of Peru, Sherman of Peru and Joy of Nebraska City. Lincoln | The Nebraska State Journal | 1944-06-12 Funeral of Oren Applegate to be Thursday at Gibbon GIBBON, Neb. – Services will be held Thursday afternoon at the Baptist church here for Oren Applegate, 30, son of a pioneer Gibbon family. He was found dead in bed Sunday morning at his farm home southwest of Gibbon. Authorities attributed his sudden death to a heart attack which occurred sometime during the night. He had been in the best of health. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Gibbon. Surviving are his wife, Veda; one daughter, Audrey; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Applegate, Gibbon; four brothers, Lorett, in California, Hugh, in Idaho, Esther and Max both of Gibbon, and two sisters, Bonnie and Norma, both of Kearney. The war department made public Saturday the names of 25 Nebraska soldiers killed in action in the European area and 12 in the Mediterranean. The list includes: PVT. GEORGE D. Martin, jr. will take place June 1 at St. Paul Methodist chapel, will be honored at a tea Saturday afternoon at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Lincoln C.
