He married in Oct 1650 to Hannah Patrick of Gravesend, daughter of Capt. Daniel Patrick (killed in Stamford, Conn. by Hans Frederick ) and Anneken ( VanBeyeren ). Patrick(died Apr.1656 in Flushing,NY.(After Daniel Patrick's death, she married Tobias Feacke ). In 1650, Bartholomew completed with William Wilkins, a tide mill on Strom Kiln. Over the next 25 years, Bartholomew's name appears from time to time in the records of Gravesend(Stillwell, p.3). One of these records indicated that his wife Hannah and child were apparently abducted by the Indians and were ransomed with red cloth. On Mar. 7, 1674, Bartholomew Applegate ( Appelgadt ), Thomas Applegate ( Bartholomew's brother ), and Richard Sadler were granted permission to purchase lands from the Indians, near the Neversinks, in East Jersey. However, this was contested in April by John Bowne and Richard Hartshorne who filed notice that the grant was an infringement of their patent. The Council ordered them to prove their claim with six months, but by that time, the English had taken over the country and it was necesary to reapply for a new warrent from those in power. In 1684, Bartholomew was in Sussex Co., Delaware and was cited as delinquent in working on the hiways(Some Records of Sussex Co., Delaware. C.H.S. Turner. Philadelphia, Allan, Land, and Scott. 1909. p116). In 1685/86, the rights of Bartholomew Applegate for 200 acres of land at the Falls of the Shrewsbury were vested in Col. Lewis Morris. Later on, he was believed whaling off the coast of New Jersey. Children: 5A4C1L. Peter S. Applegate, born Nov. 9, 1834; died . He married on Dec. 23, 1855 at Cranbury M.E. Church, with the Rev. George H. Jones, officiating, to Maria Rieding, born Jan. 1835 in England; died June 26, 1900. They lived in Hightstown, NJ. In 1900, their grandson, Leroy D. Bowne was living with them. Maria's will, dated June 22, 1899 was proved on July 9, 1900. Children: 5A4C1L2. Virginia(Jennie) Applegate, born Feb. 19, 1860; died 1888. She married at New Brunswick, NJ on Monday, Dec. 7, 1881 with the Rev. W. J. McKnight, officiating, to David G. Bowne, of Jamesburg, NJ, born ; died 1899. Children: 5A4C1L2A. Leroy D. Bowne, born Oct. 1882; died . He received a $600 note held by his grandmother, Maria Applegate, in her will. 5E. John Applegate, born c1676; died some time before Mar. 4, 1747/48. He married (1) about 1697 or 1698 to Elizabeth Wirthley, born ; died 1740; (2) to Hannah _____, born ; who survived him. The earliest record to John appears in the will of his father, Thomas, in 1699. On Dec. 9, 1703, John Bowne sold land in Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ to John Applegate, yeoman. John in turn sold this land by deed dated, Nov. 14, 1710 to Derick Tyson of Wequatunck in Freehold, yeoman, for 100 pounds. The deed for this land was also signed by Elizabeth Applegate, his wife, land mentions the size of the tract--112 acres. He had previously bought another piece of land, in Middlesex Co., NJ, by deed dated Oct. 6, 1710 from George Willocks of Richmond Co., NY and John Harrison of Somerset Co., NJ. This property was a 200 acre tract of land on the south side of Cranbury Brook. In 1713, John Applegate was appointed a constable in Piscataway. On May 28, 1746, John Applegate, Sr. of the City of Perth Amboy transfered to his "well-beloved son, John Applegate, Jr., 30 acres of land which was part of the tract of land he had acquired from George Willocks and John Harrison in 1710. Following John's death, his widow, Hannah, requested that the eldest son, Benjamin, administer the estate and Benjamin gave his bond on Mar. 4, 1747. Zebulon Applegate was a fellow bondsman. Children: 5G7G. Annie Applegate, born Jan. 10, 1775; died 1799. She married in March 1799 with T. Everard, officiating, to Joseph Bowne, born 1765; died , son of Sam Bowne. Children: 5G7G1. Joseph Bowne, Jr., born ; died . 5G7G2. Samuel Bowne, born ; died . 5G7G3. Edward Bowne, born ; died . 5G7G4. Peggy Bowne, born ; died . 5G7H. Richard Applegate, born Oct. 10, 1762; died May 7, 1821. He married c1785 to Mary Stillwell, born 1769; died 1804, daughter of John Stillwell (b.Jan. 1739; died Sept. 22, 1826). At the age of 14, Richard enrolled as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. After the war, he returned to the family homestead where he spent the rest of his life. He ran a general store between 1802-18. Richard's estate was appraised on Oct. 26, 1821 at $5833.00 by Joseph Bowne and William Stillwell. Administrators were Joseph Stillwell and son-in-law, Samuel Bray.
