    3. Daryl, I may be able to help you. Problem is that right now I can't dig out those records. If you have James's father as Jacob, you may want to analyze those records closely and particularly if they came from that website "Applegates in America" - lot of errors. If I don't get back to you within a few weeks, please remind me. Barbara Applegate Richards. Daryl wrote: > > On 12/24/05, Dan M <wb@wvi.com> wrote: > > > > ....... 1. Re: [APPLEGATE] BOWNE married to an APPLEGATE
    2. Audrey Bownes and Appelgates have associated with oneanother for centuries. Which ones are you seeking? 1. Bartholomew Applegate, born c1620; died probably in the 1690's. he was probably the oldest child. He married in Oct 1650 to Hannah Patrick of Gravesend, daughter of Capt. Daniel Patrick (killed in Stamford, Conn. by Hans Frederick ) and Anneken ( VanBeyeren ). Patrick(died Apr.1656 in Flushing,NY.(After Daniel Patrick's death, she married Tobias Feacke ). In 1650, Bartholomew completed with William Wilkins, a tide mill on Strom Kiln. Over the next 25 years, Bartholomew's name appears from time to time in the records of Gravesend(Stillwell, p.3). One of these records indicated that his wife Hannah and child were apparently abducted by the Indians and were ransomed with red cloth. On Mar. 7, 1674, Bartholomew Applegate ( Appelgadt ), Thomas Applegate ( Bartholomew's brother ), and Richard Sadler were granted permission to purchase lands from the Indians, near the Neversinks, in East Jersey. However, this was contested in April by John Bowne and Richard Hartshorne who filed notice that the grant was an infringement of their patent. The Council ordered them to prove their claim with six months, but by that time, the English had taken over the country and it was necesary to reapply for a new warrent from those in power. In 1684, Bartholomew was in Sussex Co., Delaware and was cited as delinquent in working on the hiways(Some Records of Sussex Co., Delaware. C.H.S. Turner. Philadelphia, Allan, Land, and Scott. 1909. p116). In 1685/86, the rights of Bartholomew Applegate for 200 acres of land at the Falls of the Shrewsbury were vested in Col. Lewis Morris. Later on, he was believed whaling off the coast of New Jersey. Children: 5A4C1L. Peter S. Applegate, born Nov. 9, 1834; died . He married on Dec. 23, 1855 at Cranbury M.E. Church, with the Rev. George H. Jones, officiating, to Maria Rieding, born Jan. 1835 in England; died June 26, 1900. They lived in Hightstown, NJ. In 1900, their grandson, Leroy D. Bowne was living with them. Maria's will, dated June 22, 1899 was proved on July 9, 1900. Children: 5A4C1L2. Virginia(Jennie) Applegate, born Feb. 19, 1860; died 1888. She married at New Brunswick, NJ on Monday, Dec. 7, 1881 with the Rev. W. J. McKnight, officiating, to David G. Bowne, of Jamesburg, NJ, born ; died 1899. Children: 5A4C1L2A. Leroy D. He married (1) about 1697 or 1698 to Elizabeth Wirthley, born ; died 1740; (2) to Hannah _____, born ; who survived him. The earliest record to John appears in the will of his father, Thomas, in 1699. On Dec. 9, 1703, John Bowne sold land in Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ to John Applegate, yeoman. John in turn sold this land by deed dated, Nov. 14, 1710 to Derick Tyson of Wequatunck in Freehold, yeoman, for 100 pounds. The deed for this land was also signed by Elizabeth Applegate, his wife, land mentions the size of the tract--112 acres. He had previously bought another piece of land, in Middlesex Co., NJ, by deed dated Oct. 6, 1710 from George Willocks of Richmond Co., NY and John Harrison of Somerset Co., NJ. This property was a 200 acre tract of land on the south side of Cranbury Brook. In 1713, John Applegate was appointed a constable in Piscataway. On May 28, 1746, John Applegate, Sr. of the City of Perth Amboy transfered to his "well-beloved son, John Applegate, Jr., 30 acres of land which was part of the tract of land he had acquired from George Willocks and John Harrison in 1710. Following John's death, his widow, Hannah, requested that the eldest son, Benjamin, administer the estate and Benjamin gave his bond on Mar. 4, 1747. Zebulon Applegate was a fellow bondsman. Children: 5G7G. Annie Applegate, born Jan. 10, 1775; died 1799. She married in March 1799 with T. Everard, officiating, to Joseph Bowne, born 1765; died , son of Sam Bowne. Children: 5G7G1. He married c1785 to Mary Stillwell, born 1769; died 1804, daughter of John Stillwell (b.Jan. 1739; died Sept. 22, 1826). At the age of 14, Richard enrolled as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. After the war, he returned to the family homestead where he spent the rest of his life. He ran a general store between 1802-18. Richard's estate was appraised on Oct. 26, 1821 at $5833.00 by Joseph Bowne and William Stillwell. Administrators were Joseph Stillwell and son-in-law, Samuel Bray. 3. Thanks as I sometimes find some of the postings SO interesting & want to comment, just always felt I shouldn't. My Applegate(s)?? Jacob Applegate (1829/Mo to 1895/Mo) m. 1852/KY, Elizabeth Henry, their child Anna Applegate (1857/KY to 1906?/Mo) married Charles A Maize & they were my Great Grandparents. Parents to Jacob are said to have been Thomas & Catherine A Pepper Applegate, although I've no source information to document this. My Brick wall? Verification of parents to both Jacob & Elizabeth Henry Applegate. Thanks for you kind words! & Merry Christmas!!! 3. I confess to reading and not commenting. I never see any people or lines that seem to connect to mine. I think several or maybe all of us have heard the story that all Applegates in America are related to Thomas Applegate. I don't remember when he immigrated to America but I THINK he came from England. Have any of you heard this story? LaVelle WVI WEBMAIL - http://www.wvi.com
