Just found an item on this mailing list from July 23, 2000 from "Dan and Bernie" at dbjones@proaxis.com -- it is about a Bekka Applegate who was born in NJ and married Isaac Jones and they had a son Josiah, born in 1930. I believe this to be my Jones line and I tried to email but with no success--they must have changed email addresses. Can someone help me get in touch with them or is there someone else out there from this line??? I just recently found additional information on Josiah's (my great-grandfather) family. It had been a brick wall for me........ I am willing to share information. Thank you, Vicki Jones
Reason for my post: Lavelle asked about the story that all Applegates in America descend from Thomas Applegate, 1635 immigrant. To which I replied that many other Applegates have migrated later. Dear Scharlene, Sorry for the delay in replying. I was referring to the compilation of Applegate information done by Hugh Voress. Many Applegate genealogists know of this work, and while it has many flaws, I give Mr. Voress a ton of credit for giving us a lot to start with. Back in the 1600s, the "first" Applegate family had 5 children. According to this work, only sons nos. 1 & 5 had children, so I meant to say that my husband is from the fifth son, Thomas. The 5 children were as follows: 1. Bartholomew Applegate, born circa 1620; died probably in the 1690's. He was probably the oldest child. He married in Oct 1650 to Hannah PatrickGravesend, daughter of CAPT. DANIEL PATRICK (killed in Stamford, Conn. by Hans Frederick ) and ANNEKEN (VAN BEYEREN). of 2. Helena Applegate, born c1621; died c1652. She married (1) to Thomas Farrington, born ; died ; (2) on Aug. 15, 1646 to Louis Hulot, born ; died ; (3) to Carl Morgijn (Morgan), born ; died before 1652. She had a child by her last marriage. 3. Margaret Applegate, born ; died . She married Richard Sadler, born ; died . 4. John Applegate, born c1630; died about 1712 in Fairfield, Conn. He married Avis Goulding, who died in Fairfield, Conn. on Feb. 3, 1717, aged c80 years. In 1650, he is listed among the list of residents of Gravesend, Long Island and in 1655 as of Thompson's Long Island. In 1661, he is charged with smuggling in New Amsterdam, but that charge was not sustained later. In 1663, he is a freeholder of Oyster Bay, Long Island. He bought land a house in Fairfield, Conn. about 1663, from Mary Macock; and purchased land from Samuel Forman in 1667 and John Pell in 1671. There are records of John purchasing lots in Fairfield, Conn. In 1696, Avis sold his property in Gravesend to her brother, Joseph Goulding. John Williams and Theophilus Hull of Fairfield conveyed on Jan. 18, 1704 to John Applegate one half of the long lot formerly belonging to Samuel Ward, deceased. John's will was dated Nov. 13, 1704 and mentions wife Avis, Exec'x; sons of brother, Thomas Applegate, with Avis t! o receive all of his estate and at her death to go to his brother, Thomas's sons. The will was probated on Jan. 24, 1712 with John Meredith of Newport, Rhode Island, one of the witnesses, swearing that John Applegate was of sound mind. An inventory had previously made on Dec. 25, 1712 and put a value of 921.07.10. On Jan. 20, 1715, John Williams conveyed land to Avis Applegate for 40 pounds, part of a debt of over 53 pounds in silver money which he owed to John Applegate, dec'd. Avis on Feb. 2, 1716, "for the love and respect which I bear unto John Williams of Fairfield and to his children", reconveyed the house and lot to him and his children, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Abiah, and Mary.(History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield). Following, Avis' death, her estate was administered by her nephew, Joseph Applegate. Samuel Barlow and Moses Ward made an inventory of the estate on Feb. 5, 1716/17 and reported, "nothing left after paying debts". On May 1, 1716/17, the Court of Proba! te held in Fairfield, CN ruled that the "clear estate of John Applegate was 116.19.1 pounds after allowance of 5 pounds to Joseph Applegate for "for his work of Administration" and court costs of 0.12.0. and the court authorized Joseph Applegate to distribute the estate in equal portions to the six sons of John's brother, Thomas. John and Avis apparently had no children. 5. Thomas Applegate, Thomas was born c1632; died 1699. He married (1)_______, born ; died ; (2) to Joanna Gibbons (born 1652/Monmouth, New Jersey; died after 1699/1700) daughter of RICHARD GIBBONS, who was one of the twelve patentees of Monmouth Co., NJ. He apparently moved to New Jersey sometime in the 1660's as his cattle mark was recorded in the town book of Middletown on Jan. 4, 1668. On Mar. 8, 1674, Thomas petitioned along with his brother, Bartholomew for land in the Neversinks. On Apr. 21, 1676, John Fenwick gave a deed to Thomas Applegate, weaver, of New Shrewsberry, NJ for 600 acres in Fenwick's Colony. There was a second deed on Sept. 20, 1677 to Thomas Applegate of the Falls in New Shrewsberry in NJ, weaver, of 480 acres in the allotment of Cohanzick along the Marsh, part of Edward Boarnes 2000 acres. On Oct. 19, 1677, he secured by a quit-claim deed, two hundred and forty acres of upland and meadow in Shrewsbury Twp., Monmouth Co.,! NJ. There are records that he served on jury duty in Middlesex Co., NJ. On Feb. 14, 1679, Thomas Applegate along with 12 others obtained a charter to hunt whales. He made his will on Feb. 1, 1698 and it was proved on Mar. 29, 1699; his death must have occurred between these dates, probably in Feb. 1699. His wife, Joanna and her father, Richard Gibbons, were the executors of his estate. Thomas and Johanna had 7 children. Hope this helps.
