Jack and Merle Apperson figure in the story as locals that had encounters with Ishi before and after his arrival in Oroville. They became friends and assisted with a field study in 1914 back into the Mill Creek canyon area, east of Vina with Ishi and Anthropologists from UCBerkly to revisit his living environment prior to 1911.
