These Raleys ended up in Clay Co, IL, via OH where a son, James Raley, was born abt 1819. From here they migrated into IN. I do not know which county where they settled. After 1821 John Raley JR was born in IN. They had William, James, John JR, Vesta Ann who married Davis Foster, Marion and one more son that I can not recall his name at the moment. James SR, John JR & William all married Shepherd women. Best I can learn ab out the Shepherds they were out of OH. Apparently there were two or three Apperson children ment- ioned in the probate records for James Raley who died in Jan 1848 in Clay Co, IL. John Raley JR died in March 1848, Clay Co, IL.. I was aauming that there might have been a daugh- ter of marriage age who had married an Apperson and she died before reaching Clay Co, IL.. Do you show any Apper- sons in IN, IL or OH of this time period? John Raley SR was married to a Catherine born MD.

I don't know what bearing this might have on the GM claims, since they were so much later. Nevertheless, I do remember one of the earlier Buckingham/Cumberland APPERSON folks being called "free person of color". That has always made me wonder, and want to see the original document to see if it is interpreted correctly. I have a couple of APPERSON men carrying the Poindexter name. One is my so-many-greats uncle, Lemuel Poindexter Apperson (b. NOV 1840). The other is William Poindexter Apperson (b. 25 DEC 1825). If you go to WorldConnect, and plug in apperson for surname, and poindexter for spouse, you get 44 hits, probably all of them making interesting reading. FWIW

Why I am so interested in this is that my husband is NA and is matching Peter Apperson DNA on a 25 Y marker. My theory is that my husband's Webb ancestor must be the child of an Apperson man and a Webb woman. Aha, now I see something: Luvitha was the d/o Isham and Nancy (Pledge)Vest. "Nancy was the daughter of Francis Pledge and a granddaughter of Ann Radford Pledge. It may be that William(Pledge) was married twice as one record states he married Betty Donahoo, the daughter of a chief of the Cherokee Indian tribe and a white woman, Mary Wentworth, the daughter of an English nobleman."
