Greetings all, K., not sure if you ever got your answer, but I returned from Scotland last June, and the practice there means that the person leaving the coin is paying homage to the memory of the deceased. Also, in ancient times (Greece, mainly,) it was a way of paying so the deceased would have a safe passage to the next world. In the military, it is a old way of honoring a dead comrade. I hope this helps:-) My apologies to all on this list....I have been in & out of country for a few years. Things are settling down a bit now (because I'm older! HA!:-) -Jaymes ----- Original Message ----- From: "k" <kgsno@alltel.net> To: <appalachian-roots@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 6:41 PM Subject: [APPALACHIAN-ROOTS] Coins & Tombstone > Hello listers, > > I know you are out there and I know there are 100+ subscribers on > this list! > > Sure is quite for so many, why not add your queries or stories or > what ever you think would be of interest to the group. > > I have a question, what is the placing of coins on a tombstone > suppose to mean? May I highly recommend Genealogy Bank? Footnote has excellent resources but their method of having to download documents ONE page at a time is REALLY aggravating and a detriment to people purchasing a subscription to the service. It can really be a pain if you want a document like a Civil War service record that has lots of pages. For anyone who doesn't know it yet, and as I learned on another list recently, Win7 does not include an e-mail program: no Outlook or Outlook Express. You have to use a third-party program like Gmail or Thunderbird. Debi Coe ---- "Joyce G. You'll learn that your entire hard drive will have to be reformatted to install 7. It isn't the usual upgrade so anything you have on the drive will be erased. You'd also need to learn which of your program may or may not be compatible with it or which companies plan on providing the files necessary to make your programs usable. Hello Cherokeeldy51, Hey Cherokee Lady, I was happy to see your query!! Wish we had more taking advantage of being onlist. I'm interested in anything that names: ALSBURY** BLACKBURN** BRADFORD** COPELAND (& variations)** FOX** GRIFFIN (& variations)** HARVEY** JONES** MANTOOTH** McINTOSH** SHARP** <<<enough for now. Anyone have anything on the above, ca 1750 to 1850??? Hello to all: I was wondering if anyone has any information on parents of Martin Roark (born in Grayson County, Virginia in 1800). I believe his father is Timothy Roark and his mother may be a Susan. This Timothy Roark died in Grayson County, Virginia...not to be confused with the Timothy Roark who moved to Tennessee with his family. I have seen in 2 places on internet that Susan is Susan Bolen. I believe another place has her as Susan Burke. Confusion...yes, cause the Timothy Roark who moved to Tennessee was married to a Sarah Bolen. Hoping someone has information. Hello listers, I know you are out there and I know there are 100+ subscribers on this list! Sure is quite for so many, why not add your queries or stories or what ever you think would be of interest to the group. I have a question, what is the placing of coins on a tombstone suppose to mean? I've been taking my camera when visiting cemeteries and taking pictures, I've found several with coins laying on them, just wonder. I was surprised to see the coins then I was really surprised that they were still there. Anyone?? B-) Kay,, list admin
Well it looks like our ancestors may have been neighbors! : ) I'm searching for the Buchanan / Miller line which originated in TN but moved to Knox Co. KY...they moved around from Atremus to Whitley to Barbourville...I'll keep an eye out for your name when I'm looking. I'm hoping to travel that way, so I can do some research...but probably not till August. The Cole family I have been researching are from John and Cuzzie/Kizzie Anderson Cole, from Buncombe Co., NC. Many of the descendants filed Cherokee applications and are listed on the census as "Indians" _http://www.geocities.com/ourmelungeons/mag_indians.html_ (http://www.geocities.com/ourmelungeons/mag_indians.html)
There are so few posts on this mail list that you get my attention, Carol. I do a little bit of reseach on both the Cole surname and the Osbourne surname. I find the Cole surname in the area of Wytheville, Virginia. I find the Osbourne surname in southeastern KY. I am interested in comparing information.
