Is anyone close enough to Colusa that you could do some local research there? I may need this for a client, although it is not certain yet. If so, let me know how soon you could do it. thanks very much. Carolyn
Hello, everyone, Is there any news about the chapter that you'd like to see in the July issue of APG eNews? If so, let me know by June 19. Thanks! Janice -- Everything turns out all right in the end. If it's not all right, it's not the end.

Hi everyone. One of my colleagues at Stanford is an LDS church member, and mentioned that the Oakland Temple is currently undergoing renovations. During renovations, you are allowed to see the private areas of the temple, where the baptisms and so on take place. So if you are interested in seeing that, now is the time. My guess is that there will be some soft proselytizing, so go at your own risk! Carolyn Redwood City > Begin forwarded message: > > > It was great to chat on Tuesday! One more draft, let me know if you see any errors. I’ll submit with Linda Okazaki’s photo of the MacEntee event. Carolyn The NorCal Chapter most recently met at two seminars. The first was in Menlo Park, at the San Mateo County Genealogical Society’s Fall Seminar, with speaker CeCe Moore. CeCe made several presentations about DNA research for genealogy. Moore demonstrated some of the intricacies of working at the level of shared chromosome comparison between cousins and across generations. She also shared with us some behind-the-scenes celebrity stories from her work on the “Finding Your Roots” television show, hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. This was an exciting event for our members as some of the information was at an advanced level. Moore described the complex uses to which autosomal DNA is being put, including for adoption and unknown parentage research, and more recently in identification of perpetrators of violent crimes (particularly murder). A very interesting development is the new public awareness of open access to DNA information voluntarily uploaded on the GEDMatch site. With the headlines about use of that site for identifying a California serial killer, and new disclosure statements on the site, it has become ethically feasible to pursue cold cases involving violent offenses. Three APG members helped organize and host the event (Christine Green, Carolyn Williams, and Cath Trindle, all officers within the county society). Because of the popularity of the speaker and the topic, the event was sold out within a week or so of the registration opening! Several others attended, and met during lunch (national APG Communications Officer Corey Oiesen, Carolyn Ybarra, Jeffrey Vaillant, and Sharon Hoyt, CG). Our second event this quarter was the Contra Costa County Genealogical Society Fall Seminar, with speaker Thomas MacEntee. APG members Lisa Gorrell, Linda Okazaki, Karla Henderlong, Madeline Yanov, and Adrienne Tomkins attended. MacEntee presented on several topics, including successful collateral and cluster searching, tips, tools, and the latest technology, and how to search for living people. (Photo courtesy of Linda Harms Okazaki: Thomas MacEntee with APG members listed above, and members of the California Genealogical Society.) Members of our group have recently completed the 6-week virtual SLIG course: Advanced Evidence Analysis Practicum. These include Sheri Fenley, author of the Educated Genealogist blog <http://www.sherifenley.blogspot.com/>, and Lisa Gorrell. The NorCal chapter is spread out throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, east to Sacramento, north to Santa Rosa and south to Santa Cruz and Monterey. Because of this large geographical distance, we meet by attending seminars and planned group visits to archives and libraries of interest to genealogical research. The chapter alternates visits to various corners of the Bay Area, all of which have rich archival repositories of interest to genealogists. The Northern California Chapter welcomes all APG members to our meetings. As is apparent from these events, our members tend to be very active, whether volunteering at a local Family History Center, serving as an officer for the county genealogical society, writing articles or a blog, teaching genealogy courses, or helping to host events. We attend national conferences, in-person and online advanced courses, and like our fellow members in other states, are constantly updating our skill sets. Many of our members take clients while holding day jobs, and thrive on keeping so busy we never have time for everything we would like to do. Historically, some of the interesting archives and venues the chapter has visited include: The Sutro Branch of the California State Library; the National Archives in San Bruno (NARA San Francisco); Stanford University Special Collections; the David Rumsey Map Collection; the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Archives and Library; several cemeteries in Colma, California (relocation site of many San Francisco burials); the Santa Clara County Archives; the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley; the San Mateo County Historical Association; the Family History Library in Oakland; the California Historical Society; and many more. In progress is our next meeting to be held during the first quarter of 2019. This will be a visit to archives in Santa Cruz, California, organized by Corey Oiesen. > > From: Chris <candmres@aol.com> > Subject: [APG-NORCAL] Re: SMCGS Seminar > To: apg-norcal@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <85C71FB7-B0AE-400C-9D1C-6AEE854ABA02@aol.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" > > Chris is seminar chair, Carolyn is Publicity and Cath is Publications all at SMCGS. > > Sent from my iPad
