On a webpage the red x also represents a graphic file that isn't accessible--either temporarily or because it is missing. You can try reloading the page to see if it comes up the second time around--but it won't always load even then--if it is no longer accessible or the link to it is bad. ------------ You can also place your curser on the red-x and right click.
