Below is a copy of the e-mail I received from AOLBrowsingHelp pertaining to my problem getting definitions updates from McAfee. After following her instructions and rebooting computer, I did not have any anti-virus protection. I am in the process of downloading AOL S&SC now but, I was wondering if there was a way to just download the anti-virus instead of having to download the complete S&SC. Lloyd My name is Althea. I want to assure you that I will do my best to give you all the help you need. There are several possible causes for this, so I have provided a number of solutions. After trying each solution, check to see if it resolved your issue. If it did not, please try the next solution listed. I recommend you save or print a copy of this e-mail for future reference. A. DELETE THE UPDATE AND DAT FOLDERS, THEN RESTART THE COMPUTER This issue is sometimes caused by a corrupted Update or DAT folder used by the McAfee Virus Scan Online software. You can correct this by deleting the Update and DAT folders. To delete the Update and DAT folders, and restart the computer using Windows XP: 1. On the WindowsC desktop, double-click the MY COMPUTER icon. 2. Click the TOOLS menu, then click FOLDER OPTIONS.... 3. Click the VIEW tab. 4. In the ADVANCED SETTINGS: section, under FILES AND FOLDERS, click the SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS option to select it, then click the OK button. 5. Double-click the LOCAL DISK (C:) icon. 6. Double-click the PROGRAM FILES folder. 7. Double-click the MCAFEE.COM folder. 8. Double-click the ANTIVIRUS folder. 9. Right-click the DAT folder, then click DELETE. 10. Click the YES button. 11. Click the X in the upper right to close the ANTIVIRUS window. 12. On the Windows desktop, double-click the MY COMPUTER icon. 13. Double-click the LOCAL DISK (C:) icon. 14. Double-click the DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folder. 15. Double-click the FOLDER with the same name as your Windows username. 16. Double-click the APPLICATION DATA folder. 17. Double-click the AOL folder. 18. Double-click the SAFETY AND SECURITY folder. 19. Right-click the UPDATE folder, then click DELETE. 20. Click the YES button. 21. Click the START button, then click SHUT DOWN. 22. Click the RESTART button.
