Never tried that. BUT that neat trick doesn't show any picture until after one has selected a file name to view. HOWEVER, in fiddling around with that trick, I discovered a solution to Dee's need for a bigger thumbnail. In step #1 of Joan's recipe, instead of clicking on FILE > OPEN, click instead on FILE > OPEN MY PICTURE FINDER That brings up the familiar folder navigation on the left, and selectable thumbnail pictures on the right. Importantly, in that same view in the lower left hand corner is a preview pane with a larger thumbnail so that one can easier tell what each picture is. Move your cursor to the edge or corner of the photo until the cursor becomes a double-edged arrow. Hold down the mouse and slide the edge of the photo to whatever size you want it to be. Do the same for width/depth or total size (from the corners). Another alternative option would be to edit the photo before selecting the insert in email option.
