    2. Thanks Sharon. I thought I would try both ways. I will have to wait and see what happens when we change over. 2. Judy, Joan is correct. You can continue using the AOL client as you do now. You just change the way it connects. There is a dropdown menu on your sign-in screen just below your password window. Simply choose the TCP/IP selection. Remember with cable, you will actually be connected to the Internet 24/7 so be sure you have a good firewall that covers both incoming and outgoing. You can do it one of two ways: 1) You can remove (or not use) your AOL program but access AOL via an independent browser (using your broadband ISP for the access) to get mail and navigate to other AOL features or (and I feel this is the preferred method and the one I've been using all along) 2) you can log onto you AOL program just as always but you won't be logging on via a phone connection. Your connection will be set up to connect via the high speed access by TCP/IP connection. AOL offers most of the features you are used to free in this case (even using the AOL software) because you are not using up a connection that costs them money via the phone lines. When you or the new broadband provider sets up their service for you -- make sure they change your AOL settings (in your AOL program) so you can logon via the broadband connection to AOL. Joan

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] new high speed connection
    2. You don't have to INSTALL anything to get AOL to connect via broadband---it is just a settings change in your sign-on settings. You usually don't really have to install anything to get the broadband connection either even though many of these companies try to make you think you do. As long as your cable modem or whatever you need for your new service is wired in you will have the broadband access once they get it running. You should also have a router between the new modem and your computer to serve as a firewall if nothing else because the broadband connection will be "live" 24/7. 2. Again...this sounds as if you are using AOL Web mail--not the AOL software and integrated mail program. You wouldn't need to open any browser if you were loading the AOL program instead of using Web mail. Joan In a message dated 4/22/2010 8:36:46 P.M. 3. It not only takes forever to open up emails & web pages, but I end up not. My email now, shows only an envelope so I don't know who is sending it until I open it. I got so sick of these problems that I went from a paying customer to free. And have gmail where I have my emails from AOL forwarded. -- Bev Carlson of MN, USA

    1. [AOL-RW] Scrubbing Disks
    2. I wonder if anyone on this list has had the experience of 'scrubbing' a disk on a discarded computer and if they can offer me any hints on doing this. (Please send to me personally to not clog up the list.) I would be interested in scrubbing everything but leave the Windows OS intact. I had read that there is a Windows Utility called 'Active Release' that does this but have been unable to find it on the web. I would prefer to not scrub the entire disk on this particular computer, but I also have an even older computer that would be acceptable to clean entirely to just dispose of. Is there a free-be one someone knows of that will do this? Thanks so much, hope this topic is allowed here. Carol

    1. Re: [AOL-RW] Rejected mail from Rootsweb list(s)
    2. We will probably continue to have this problem as long as RootsWeb uses SORBS as a part of their spam reduction measures. For any of a variety of reasons, one or more of AOL's servers gets temporarily listed with SORBS as being the source of spam. When that happens and your list-bound message just happens to be routed through the offending server--you get the bounce. I've found that simply resending the message (even immediately) often allows the message to go through just fine--because it probably will be routed through a different server the next time around or the ban will be lifted on the one identified as sending spam.
